This marks the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus. In Advent we remembered the promises of the Old Testament for a Savior, and how they were fulfilled in all the events leading up to the birth of Jesus. We have relived the greatest event in history: the birth of the Messiah. Last week on Epiphany, we were reminded that Jesus is the savior of every person from every land. Today we hear the voice of God saying “You are my beloved Son on whom my favor rests.” WINTER ORDINARY TIME The Christmas decorations will be removed on Sunday afternoon. The crib and the trees and the Christmas wreath will be stored away until next year. The church will appear empty as we begin Winter Ordinary Time. We enter the coldest days of the year and the time when snow is likely. The earth is dormant. For the next five weeks we listen to the story of the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. Then on Ash Wednesday, February 18, the season of Lent begins. NEWSLETTER EDITOR NEEDED The next issue of the Spirit of Providence newsletter is being prepared. For many years, Joe Dunne has done a great job of putting together this bi-monthly publication which is mailed to every parish household. But this is his last issue. If we are going to continue this method of communication I need a replacement for Joe. Certainly there are people in the parish with background and experience to step forward. Did anyone at OLP attend the J School at Mizzou? Or edit a high school paper? If so, your help is needed. It would be a shame to let go of this vehicle for building up our parish community. If a number of people volunteer we could divide up the workload. If you have any interest at all contact me at the rectory (314-843-3570) or a [email protected]. HOLY CROSS ACADEMY OPEN HOUSE On Sunday, January 25 the three campuses of Holy Cross Academy are holding an open house from 11 AM until 2 PM. This is the kickoff for Catholic Schools Week. I would like to invite all parishioners to stop by and see what is going on in our collaborative model of Catholic education. If you know anyone who might be interested in placing their children in HCA invite them to the open house and come with them. We are looking for children not in Catholic school at the present time from pre-school through eighth grade. We do accept children from other Catholic schools if they receive permission from their pastor. We are proud of what we are doing and would be happy to have you stop by all three campuses and find out what makes it so exciting. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY Unlike many holidays this holiday which is observed on Monday, January 19 is still a remembrance of the words and work of this disciple of non-violent change. In light of the current tensions in our metropolitan area it might do us well to review his life and his accomplishments. There is still a lot of work to be done before we can realize the dream that he communicated and for which he died. Let’s continue to pray for peace in our community and for concrete steps to build up mutual trust and tear down the walls of fear and anger. Fr. Diabetes is a condi on that results when your blood glucose or blood sugar is too high. Blood glucose is the main type of sugar found in your blood and your main source of energy. Glucose comes from the foods you eat and is also made in your liver and muscles. Your blood carries glucose to all of your body’s cells to use for energy. Your pancreas, an organ located between your stomach and spine, helps with diges on. It releases insulin into your blood. Insulin is a hormone that helps your blood carry glucose to all your body’s cells. Some mes your body doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin doesn’t work the way it should. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells. As a result, your blood glucose levels get too high and can cause diabetes. What are the signs and symptoms of diabetes? Being very thirsty Dry, itchy skin Urinating often Feeling of pins and needles in Feeling very hungry your feet Feeling very tired Loosing feeling in your feet Losing weight without trying Blurry eyesight Sore that heal slowly Mother of Mary Walsh Randant Some people with diabetes don’t have any of these signs or symptoms. The only way to know if you have diabetes is to have your doctor do a blood test. Mrs. Walsh died December 24, 2014 and was buried from Holy Redeemer on December 30. Please remember her and her family in your prayers. What are the different types of diabetes? The three main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gesta onal diabetes. People can develop diabetes at any age. Please pray that all our deceased loved ones may know the joy and peace of eternal life, and that their families may be comforted. Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Bap sm Today we celebrate the Bap sm of the Lord, who was bap zed by John the Bap st to sanc fy the waters. “Bap sm isn’t just a ceremony or ritual, it is a sacrament; a sacrament brings us into a living rela onship with God. The Lord himself dwells within us through bap sm and desires us to share in His holiness and mission” (Archbishop Carlson). Are you living out your bap smal calling through a life of holiness and mission? Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. - Martin Luther King, Jr. Type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because it most o en develops in young people. However, it can develop in adults. In type 1 diabetes, your body no longer makes insulin or enough insulin because the body’s immune system has a acked and destroyed the cells that make insulin. Those with type 1 diabetes most o en must take insulin through injec on (shots). Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes, but it can affect people at any age, even children. In most cases, type 2 diabetes occurs most o en in those in middle-age or older people. People who are overweight and inac ve are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance. This is a condion that occurs when fat, muscle and liver cells do not use insulin to carry glucose into the body’s cells to use for energy. As a result, the body needs more insulin to help glucose enter the cells. At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by making more insulin. Over me, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin as the blood sugar levels increase. Gesta onal diabetes: Gesta onal diabetes can develop when a woman is pregnant. Pregnant women make hormones that can lead to insulin resistance. All women have insulin resistance late in their pregnancy. Nest Week: Part 2: Trea ng Diabetes OLP Blood Drive — Will You Give?
