The Christmas celebration continues today with the feast of The Epiphany of the Lord, an event recorded in the Gospel of St. Matthew that records the visit by the Magi representing the Gentiles. The Father offers the gift of salvation to all mankind, Jew and Gentile alike, at Bethlehem. On our behalf, the Magi presented three gifts to the Christ Child: gold to proclaim his kingship, incense to adore his Godhead, and myrrh to acknowledge his mortality which would lead to our salvation through his death on Calvary. The Christmas crèche enhances our celebration of Christmas each year by pointing to the birth of the Savior at Bethlehem. History attributes the crèche to St. Francis of Assisi and we are very fortunate to have a beautiful manger set at Queen of All Saints. The figures were repaired and repainted by a local artist earlier this year. The Christmas crèche is an important feature of our parish celebration and teaches all who spend time before it of the importance of the Incarnation and the nearness of God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” (John 3:16) A Blessed and Happy New Year to all! Many people were involved in preparing the church and the celebrations of the special liturgies of Advent and Christmas. A special thanks to the Liturgy Committee for arranging the hospitality ministers, the lectors and the servers; to Chris Dunn and the musicians and choirs for the moving liturgical music; to Tina Moszczenski and the decorators for adding to the Advent and Christmas spirit; to Jerry Mueller for the new arrangement of the church crèche; to the volunteers who set up the Limbach Hall for the extra Mass on Christmas Eve; to the Knights of Columbus for assembling the outdoor crèche; to Cindy Mittrucker for arranging the Epiphany chalk blessing packets; and to many and all who assisted the Vincentians (St. Vincent de Paul Society) in providing Christmas gifts and corporal works of mercy throughout the year to the many hundreds in the St. Louis area seeking assistance. Monsignor Joseph Simon EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR REMEDIATION COVERAGE AND HVAC SYSTEMS IN SCHOOL AND LIMBACH HALL Queen of All Saints Parish is asking all parishioners and friends of the parish for contributions to cover the cost of remediating the school and church hall this past summer, and to cover the cost of repairs to or replacement of the HVAC systems in the school and Limbach Hall. The Finance Council is asking each family to make a pledge payable over the next 9 months for these expenses in addition to ordinary monthly or weekly contributions. Beginning in December a “Mold Remediation Appeal” envelope will be in the monthly envelope packet. Donations may also be made through Faith Direct (enroll at the parish office or online at Faith Direct; the QAS parish code is MO86). The parish expended $465,000 for remediation repairs in the school and the church hall of which $330,000 has already been paid and three final payments totaling $135,000 are due by the end of December. The repair or replacement of HVAC systems is unknown at this time. Once an estimate is determined, it will be announced. We appreciate your assistance in covering these extraordinary expenses which obviously were not known at the time the budget was prepared for this year. THANK YOU FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREATS The priests and staff members are most grateful for the Christmas cookies and other treats that added to the celebration of Christmas. 2015 CATHOLIC CALENDARS AVAILABLE The 2015 Religious Art Calendars are available at the church doors. We are grateful to Kutis Funeral Home for providing parish calendars again this year. NEW LED CHURCH SIGN INSTALLED A new church sign has been installed by Warren Sign Co. of Arnold along Christopher Rd. in front of the church. The LED-equipped sign will provide continuous information pertaining to parish worship and life at Queen of All Saints. The sign including all installation costs were a gift of an anonymous donor. The parish is most appreciative of this generous gift. Because of St. Louis County zoning laws, the Respect Life sign was relocated to the corner of Limbach Hall (site of the old sign). The same zoning laws required us to remove the brickencased church sign but the law did allow us to install an artistic rendering of the mosaic of “Mary with the Christ Child” which decorates the sanctuary wall in the church….. We are grateful to Betty Bast, affectionately known as the “sign lady”, who for many years changed the messages on the old sign and kept everyone in the know about events at QAS. The new sign will be controlled by the office staff via their computers. It should be up and running soon. January 4, 2015 The Epiphany of the Lord The Epiphany of the Lord “...they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh…” (Matthew 2:11) Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. The they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share! This special blessing will take place following the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses. All those expecting a child, through their pregnancy or awaiting adoption of a child, are encouraged to come for this blessing every month. As a parish, we continue to pray for the unborn babies who will soon join our congregation. Let us pray for good health and safe deliveries. Roses for the Unborn Have you noticed the beautiful vase of roses near the baptismal font? The red roses represent life......within us and among us. QAS Respect Life Apostolate would like to honor those who are expecting a child, as well as families waiting to adopt, and publicly show our prayerful encouragement for new life. Our goal is to grow a prayerful awareness of the many unborn children soon to join our parish! We encourage the prayers of the entire parish and look forward to welcoming these children into the Catholic community at QAS. If you are expecting a baby or are waiting to adopt a child, please call Jeannine Sinak, 293-0670, to have a rose placed in the vase. The rose will remain in church throughout your pregnancy to symbolize the prayerful support of the QAS community. After your child is born, you are encouraged to take your rose, as a reminder of the prayers offered for your child, even before he/she was born. When you see these roses in church, say a prayer for all the unborn, especially those soon to be parishioners of Queen of All Saints. The Parish Council will be adding three new members in January, 2015. We are currently seeking volunteers who are interested in serving as a member on the Council. The Parish Council promotes dialogue between parishioners and the parish staff, coordinates parish activities, and serves as advisors to the pastor. Please contact Scott Gurley (314) 433-3230 or the parish office 846-8207, Ext. 200 Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want to be included in the Parish Directory? If you have not already informed the Parish Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. In order to help us all know more about our Parish and to have an annually updated Parish Directory, we have contracted once again with Guide Book Publishing to produce a “Guide Book and Directory.” The book will be direct mailed to every household registered in our parish and is being provided at no cost to Queen of All Saints. This Guide Book & Directory is and shall remain the property of this Parish and is intended for the private use of the members of this congregation only. Use of this book by anyone for a business purpose or for telephone or mail solicitations is strictly forbidden. If you do not want your phone number and/or your address listed in this publication, please contact the Parish Office, 846-8207, ext. 200. GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Parish. This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The book is being provided at no cost to our Parish, including the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office, 846-8207, ext. 200. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory. CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD The Children’s Liturgy of the Word at 10:30 am Mass is open to all children ages 4-8. Older children are asked to stay with their families. SALAD DONATIONS St. Patrick's Center - more than ever - needs pre-packaged salads for the Shamrock Club to serve alongside donated casseroles during lunch. QAS has a small devoted number of regular donors but the need is great. Please deposit bags of salad and unopened dressing bottles on the front porch of 132 Staehle Ct. (Grimsley Station to Bluff Farm to Staehle Ct) on the 1st Wednesday of every month. A volunteer takes them downtown at 9:30am. Any questions, call Sheila Treptow 846-4015. Let us be the hands of Christ! PLEASE NOTIFY PARISH WHEN HOSPITALIZED Due to HIPAA, the hospitals can no longer reveal names of parishioners who are hospitalized. January 4, 2015 8TH GRADE PRO-LIFE ESSAY CONTEST Did you know that QAS has an annual essay contest sponsored by the Respect Life Apostolate and the Knights of Columbus? 8th graders are asked to write a short essay, then members of the RLA read and judge the essays. The K of C pays for four 8th graders and two chaperones to travel to Washington DC for the March for Life. This year students were asked to write about the negative impact abortion has on our society. This excerpt is from runner up Mary Ruzicka. (Abortion) "has caused our culture to place less value on human life". And from runner up Hallie Kilfoy, "When a woman wants to abort her baby, she is doing dangerous things not only to the baby but herself. If a woman has an abortion, the procedure could possibly injure her. Scientists have said that there is a 30% greater chance of getting breast cancer because of induced abortion." Legalized abortion had definitely impacted our society in many ways. Let us continue to work and pray for an end to abortion and a renewed respect for ALL human life. The Epiphany of the Lord NAMING AND COMMENDATION RITE FOR CHILDREN LOST BEFORE BIRTH Have you, or someone you know, lost a baby before he/she was born? That life was known to God and was valuable. Anyone who has lost a child before birth for any reason (miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion) is encouraged to attend the Naming and Commendation Rite at Queen of All Saints on Sunday, January 18 at a 2:00 PM Mass, with Fr. Fallon as Celebrant. This beautiful ritual shows the Church’s respect for the sacredness of all human life from the moment of conception– regardless of a child’s age or stage of development. It acknowledges that all life, even the lives of those who are never born, impacts families. It also helps bring peaceful closure after a great loss. It helps families and friends place the infant’s death in the context of faith and remind them of the merciful love of God. Parents, grandparents, friends, and siblings of a child who died before birth are all welcome to attend this Mass and healing rite. This special rite is open to everyone, not just QAS parishioners. Please reach out and invite someone who may benefit, whether their loss was recent or many years ago. All are welcome. For more information, contact Jeannine Sinak at 293-0670. “MAY CHRIST BLESS THIS HOUSE” March for Life - January 22, 2015 January 22, 2015 will mark the 42nd anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in our country. Hundred of thousands of people will travel to Washington DC from all around the country for a peaceful, prayerful protest to this evil in our land. QAS 8th graders, teens and our Youth Minister will be attending! Is this the year YOU travel to Washington DC? Buses leave from St. David's church in Arnold on January 21. More information is available at www.missourilife.org or by calling Jeannine at 314293-0670. It is a custom on the feast of Epiphany that specially blessed chalk be given out for the purpose of begging God’s blessing of homes on this Feast Day. The traditional method for blessing homes this day is using chalk (an incarnational image because it reminds us of the dust of the earth from which we were made). The chalk is used to mark 20+C+B+15 over the doorways. The numerals consecrate the new year. The initials remind us of the legendary names of the magi - Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar - and also stands for the Latin motto: “Christus mansionem benedicat” (May Christ Bless the House.) There are little packets at the church doors this weekend that contain chalk and the procedure for marking the home. 16TH Annual St. Louis Marian Conference Prayer Group for Moms/Grandmas Moms in Prayer is a group of moms who meet for one hour each week to pray specifically for our children (grandchildren), our schools, and our teachers. SCRAP METAL NEEDED Members from Mary Mother will come to your house and pick up any metal item you want to discard, and sell it for scrap. The money goes to support the Mary Mother St. Vincent de Paul Conference. We take appliances, barbecue pits and lawnmowers but do not take televisions, microwaves, or pressurized tanks. For more information or to schedule a pickup, call Kathleen Riggio, 314-6142874. Queen of All Saints - St. Vincent DePaul “Couponing for a Cause” Do you know how to coupon or want to learn? We need you. Please join us for a positive, upbeat gathering to teach others what we know about couponing. We will do this for our families and for those in need. Did you know you cannot purchase personal hygiene, cleaning or paper products with food stamps? That’s where this group comes in. We will purchase those items for little or no money and donate them to St. Vincent DePaul to take to families facing emergency situations. We will also learn how to save money ourselves and restock our own pantries. We will meet in the school library at 7PM the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month through May. THE PROGRAM TO SEND EXPIRED COUPONS TO THE TROOPS HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. Feel free to call or email us at: Holly Wille…314-846-7456 or [email protected] Alicia Hayden…314-680-7768 or [email protected] Christina Kennedy…314-660-7785 or [email protected] PLEASE SAVE YOUR COUPONS AND PUT THEM IN THE SVDP BASKETS IN THE BACK OF CHURCH Come join the fun, ask your family and friends, all are welcome.
