Today is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is (at the same time!) the last day of the Christmas Season and the First
Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today we make the transition from the joy of Christmas to the time of everyday growth and grace.
How appropriate then that we mark this transition by celebrating Christ’s Baptism and ours.
Baptism is the first Sacrament, the gateway to all the other Sacraments of the Church. The Church teaches that Baptism has
two effects: it washes away original sin and makes us part of the family of God. Which may lead one to ask: then why in the
world did Jesus need to be baptized? He was sinless, of course, and as the Son of God, he certainly was already part of the
family of God. But still, Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River in order to give us an example to follow. As Christians,
we want to live our life as Christ lived his. By subjecting himself to being baptized, Christ gave us an example and made all the
waters of Baptism holy by his own Baptism.
King Louis IX of France, the patron of our City and our Archdiocese, said that he preferred the Church of his Baptism to the
Cathedral where he was crowned King. “The latter is a crown I will lose at death, but the former is the crown of eternal life,”
he said. Baptism is one of the greatest gifts that God gave to us, because it opens so many possibilities to a grace-filled earthly
life and it opens for us the gates of eternal life. Today, and every day, give thanks to God for the gift of your Baptism!
Let me share a few practical thoughts about Baptism for adults and for infants. Adults who have not been baptized, but express a desire to do so, are baptized at the Easter Vigil after participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, a process
of prayer, formation, study, and spiritual growth that can take a year or more. The Church takes Baptism seriously and wants
her children to be well prepared and well disposed to receive the Sacrament. At the Easter Vigil, an adult who is baptized also
receives the Sacrament of Confirmation and shares in the Eucharist, as these three Sacraments of Initiation make one a fullyinitiated Catholic.
The Catholic Church recognizes as valid the Baptisms of other Christian religions, provided that they are baptized with water
“in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” That is why a person who is baptized in another Christian
denomination, but wishes to join the Catholic Church, is not “re-baptized” but instead joins the Church by completing the
Sacraments of Initiation and is Confirmed and receives the Eucharist. Baptism is a singular Sacrament, given and received one
time only.
Since the time of the Apostles, we believe that parents have had their infants and children baptized. Parents know how to give
good things to their children, and no good parent deprives their child of food, warmth, an education, or love. In the same way,
Baptism is a gift of faith that parents should want to give to their children. Just as no parent would wait for their child to grow
up and make his or her own decision about whether they wanted to go to school (what child would want to?), so too no parent should wait until their child is older and let them decide on their own if they wish to live a life of faith.
It used to be the tradition to have a child baptized immediately after birth. While anyone can baptize in case of an emergency,
today most parents wait a few weeks after birth so that everyone is healthy and so that the family has time to gather to celebrate a Baptism. Even so, I’d encourage parents not to delay baptizing their child, but to see that this is done in a timely manner, certainly within a few months of a child’s birth.
It is the parents’ responsibility to raise their child in the faith, which is why I always meet with new parents to discuss Baptism
and their own practice of the Catholic faith. Often someone calls me to arrange for the baptism of their child, but they are
not a member of any parish and have not been to Mass in years. While this is always an opportunity to invite and encourage
someone to return to the faith, it can also be an awkward conversation. A parent cannot request Baptism for their child
unless he or she is willing and able to raise that child in the faith, and that requires practicing the faith personally! This is also
why I don’t arrange a Baptism through grandparents or other family members; it must be the parents who request the Sacrament and take the responsibility. Parents must choose worthy godparents, whose sole responsibility is to be a good example
of faith for their godchild. Many parents automatically want to choose an aunt or uncle to be a godparent, but if that person is
not a practicing Catholic and is not a good example of the faith, then that person is not a qualified godparent.
In the end, all this is so important because Baptism is so important in the life of a Christian. It is not just a photo-opportunity,
not just something to do because grandma wants it, not just a feel-good ceremony. It’s a profound immersion into the Death
and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the most important moment of our life of faith! Pray that every member of the Church recognizes and believes this!

We are examining all donations, pledges and commitments made by December 31. 2014. It
appears that we did not have pledges in hand by the end of the year, to reach our campaign
goal of $1,000,000.
We are not finished! We can do this! We will do this!
If you have not yet made a pledge or commitment to the Capital Campaign, please do
so. Any member of the Campaign Committee would be happy to talk to you about the
Campaign, and how you can help us attain our goal. Materials about the Campaign are
available in the church, or in our Rectory office. Remember! Even a small weekly
donation, given over time, can add up to a significant contribution to the Campaign.
• If you have already made a commitment to the Campaign, thank you! Might you consider stretching a little, and give more? Do you give to the parish regularly electronically? Do you know you can give to the Capital Campaign electronically? Simply go
to:
https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/969
and enter your "username" and "password." Then, click on "Give a New Gift." Next to
"Capital Campaign," click on the "drop down" at "Gift Type" and select "recurring" or
"one time." Enter the required information. If you have not registered with "OSV

On behalf of the Immigrant & Refugee Ministry, I would like to
take this opportunity to sincerely thank each and every one of
you for your contribution and help in making the Migration
Mass a success. The Mass is a huge event and it would not be
possible without the assistance of countless people who help
prepare ahead of time, work during the event, and clean up
afterward. Besides, this is my first Migration Mass and thank
you for the grace, generosity and most of all patience that you
extended to me during the event. May God bless you and
your families for your hard work and dedication! It has been a
pleasure working with you and I look forward to working with
you again.
God bless,
