OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
250 years of faith-filled commitment distinguishes St. Joseph Parish, a Roman Catholic community
located in West Milford Township in rural northern New Jersey. Lay people founded this community in
1765 and maintained it in the consistent practice of the Roman Catholic faith, thus earning it the honor
of being the State’s oldest parish.
Today’s parishioners, responding to the needs of the changing West Milford area, aim to develop further
the lay involvement that historically characterizes St Joseph’s They accomplish this by expressing their

Gospel: John 1: 35-42
SCRIPTURE FOCUS: John the Baptist’s role is to identify
Jesus as the Lamb of God, who will forgive the sins of the
world. This statement recognizes Jesus’ importance and
leads John’s disciples to leave him and follow Jesus, the
Son of God. In this short section of the Gospel, much is
said about openness, for example, the ability to accept the
word about Jesus and letting one’s heart be moved.

CEMETERY NEWS
The Christmas season ends on January 11, 2015, the Baptism of the Lord. The grounds department will start removing
Christmas and non-religious items from graves on or about

The food pantry needs: vegetables, jelly,
coffee and tea. Also body soap, toothpaste and laundry detergent.
MEMORIES OF OUR PARISH
A Memory from the St. Joseph’s Friary Chronicles from
1961.
Rosary Society meets on First Monday after first Sunday
and has some ninety active members. On First Fridays
the ladies prepare a coffee-cake breakfast for school children so the youngsters can get to Holy Communion. Each
Wednesday about twenty-five members are on adoration
before the Blessed Sacrament in the church at different
times. They visit the sick in the parish; say the rosary at
wakes for deceased parishioners; for the poorer ones give
contributions to help defray funeral expenses & notify at
once the priests about hospitalized or sick parishioners in
their areas of residence. They provide supervision over
school children during lunch hour so the Sisters can have
their noon-day meal in peace. Third Sunday of each month
is their Communion Sunday and a good representative
number receives their Eucharistic Lord on that day. On
October 1st they had their Annual Communion Breakfast at
which Fr. Alfred Martin, OFM spoke on raising children and
Kathie Dunne, from the Broadway play, “Sound of Music,”
provided the entertainment. Throughout the year they run
social activities to raise funds for the parish. One of their
more illustrious members, Mrs. Mae (Thomas) Reilly, was
elected as President of National Council of Catholic
Women of the Paterson Diocese on October 28th.

“Thus says the Lord: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom
I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit.” These prophetic words from our First Reading (Isaiah 42) come to their fulfillment with the Baptism of Jesus: “On coming up out of the water he saw the
heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Gospel of the Day: Mark 1) These two readings form a
bracket around the Liturgy of the Word for today’s feast – The Baptism of the Lord. This Feast is also the
culmination of the liturgical season of Christmas.
Tomorrow, January 12, 2015, once again we don green vestments symbolic of our entry into Ordinary Time.
Ordinary Time is devoted to the public ministry of Jesus’ preaching and teaching. It is characterized by the
presence of the Adult Jesus and the absence of his final days which lead directly to his death and rising –
Lent/Easter. Therefore, shortly after his Baptism Jesus makes his first public appearance as the Long Awaited
Messiah and John the Baptist disappears quickly from the attention of the Gospel writers.
However, these words are not just about Jesus: they are, in as much as Jesus is the New Adam, about all of
us. The servant whom God upholds and with whom he is pleased much as to pour out his Spirit upon him is the
human creation. The Liturgy of the Word confirms this. In truth, the First Reading is not the only option; there
is a second option that speaks of all mankind being called to the waters of Baptism: “Thus says the Lord: All you
who
are
thirsty,
come
to
the
water!
You
who
have
no
money,
come, receive grain and eat; come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk…Come to me heedfully,
listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.”
(Option 2 for First Reading for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord: Isaiah 55)
There are two Psalm options as well and these, too, confirm God’s delight in us. Psalm 29 recalls Genesis
1 the story of our creation: “The voice of the Lord is over the waters, the Lord, over vast waters. The voice of the
Lord is mighty; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
Compare this to Genesis 1: “…and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a
mighty wind sweeping over the waters…Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, after our
likeness…God looked at everything he had made and found it very good.” These waters out of which God draws
mankind are the same waters of Baptism out of which he redraws mankind. Baptism is, in this sense, a second
creation by God of you and me; it is Genesis all over again so much does God delight in us. The second option
for our Psalm makes this explicit: “God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my
courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation.” (Option
2 of the Psalm of the Day – in actuality hymn found in Isaiah 12)
There are two Second Reading options: Acts 10 and 1 John 5. In Acts 10 Peter speaks of God’s salvation
offered to all the inhabitants of the earth: to all the human race. Acts 10: “Peter proceeded to speak to those
gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation
whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil.” 1 John 5 declares
unequivocally: “Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God…for whoever is
begotten by God conquers the world.”
The Baptism of the Lord is the culmination of Christmas Tide and the beginning of Ordinary Time. The
Baptism of the Lord is about the Baptism of Jesus. The Baptism of the Lord is about Jesus the Beloved Son in
whom God is well pleased. But, the Baptism of the Lord is about us too for we are all the work of his hands, his
beloved creation regenerated in the waters of Baptism. Perhaps, this Sunday we can reflect in the quiet moments
of the day on the Sacrament of Baptism; on our own reception of this Sacrament; on our having heard God
himself say to each of us: “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased…You
are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Isaiah 42 – Mark 1)
