However I have detailed in this article those mistakes which I would deem to be unacceptable whatever the role you are applying for: TYPOS These are one of the most common errors and so simple to avoid. Many companies implement a three strike rule i.e make three typos in a nine page application and it will be rejected. This applies to graduate application forms also. This type of mistake can arise because candidates tweak their CVs from time to time and suddenly the verbs don’t match up or a set of dates get knocked out of alignment. Before submitting it, read your CV from bottom to top. Reversing the normal order helps you focus on each line. Or alternatively have someone else proofread it for you. LENGTH If you’re a student looking for your first job out of University then stick to two pages max. Don’t bore the reader with your whole life story. Stick to the points relevant to the job. The truth is that most hirers inundated with applications will skim your CV in 6 seconds – so make it worth it. One page for every ten years of work experience is enough. Make it crisp and focused and convey the most important information about you. The sole purpose of a CV is to get you an interview; not to convince a Hiring Manager to say yes. That’s what the interview is for. FORMATTING There are a lot of uncreative people attempting to catch the Hirer’s attention by trying to be creative on their CVs. Colouring it pink or adding weird graphics has to be a fail. Your resume should be clean and legible presented in a professional font. White paper, black ink with consistent spacing between lines, columns aligned with your name and contact information on every page. LIES Never lie on your CV. The other mistakes mentioned above are instant failures, you may • VAT Returns & Payroll get rejected but you can sort it out. When you Services lie on your CV you will never know when you may be found out. • Monthly Management • The internet, reference checks, and people Accounts who worked at your company in the past can all reveal your fraud. • Free initial consultation • Lies follow you forever. Fabricate your CV and and quote then 15 years you get a big promotion and are discovered? Fired. Immediately. • Small business, Accounts Tax Returns For further advice or help with your recruitment needs please contact me direct: hjones@ solosconsultants.co.uk © Helen Jones self-employed and limited companies ILKESTON 0115 932 9888 6 Please mention ng8 when responding to adverts free time Wollaton Historical & Conservation Society Wed 28th January, 7.30pm St Leonard’s Community Centre, Bramcote Lane, Wollaton: “The Women in Their Lives – the 4th & 5th Dukes of Newcastle in Private” by Richard Gaunt. You can choose from the six museums operated by Nottingham City Council and volunteering is a great way to make new friends, feel involved and make a difference. Our sites are: Nottingham Castle, Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall, The Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard, The Nottingham Industrial Museum and Green’s Windmill and Science Centre. In particular we are looking for additional volunteer assistance in a range of roles at Newstead Abbey. To learn more about the site and volunteering opportunities please come along to a drop-in day at Newstead Abbey on Saturday 21st February 2015 between 11am and 3pm. Museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to show you around the site and answer any volunteering questions. They recognise that the park’s management cannot undertake everything, so that recently, for example, with help from the park rangers, volunteers made bird and bat boxes to place around the park for the benefit of wildlife. There have been a number of other similar activities throughout the year, such as cutting fallen trees to make insectfriendly habitats and clearing brush at the lake so that visitors or photographers can get a better view of the nesting herons. Friends of Wollaton Park also aim to represent users of the park and the local community. They have given advice on such things as the new children’s play-area, with another play-area planned for disabled children, plus the prospect of setting up a cafe in the old football changing-rooms. Coming up next on the agenda is the renovation of the historical walled garden which requires considerable reclamation. Volunteers include local residents, local councillors and university students. Make a New Year resolution to become active and make friends by volunteering your help occasionally while getting to know Wollaton Park and Hall intimately. Friends of Wollaton Park committee meet on the first Wednesday of every month and invite anyone interested in joining to contact [email protected] or telephone Rob Kirkwood, Chair of the Group, on 07855151658. Volunteer activities in the park or hall normally take place on the third Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month (but NOT in December). Everyone is welcome. Particularly if you have never used a gym before or it has been a while since you last went. You need to make sure the gym you pick is suitable for you so you not only get the results you are looking for but that you also enjoy your gym experience which in turn will motivate you to keep going. The drop off rate of new gym members in the first 3 months is over 70%. To avoid being part of this statistic it is important you consider a few things before signing up 1. Price: Probably the most important deciding factor of which gym a person chooses. Do they charge joining fees? (These are often negotiable) Can you pay as you go or have a trial period? Most gyms will also require you to have an induction – will this be included in your membership? If paying monthly make sure you know exactly how long you are signing up for and what the cancelation fees are. Do you get a fitness assessment, training programs, personal training sessions or access to fitness classes? 2. Location: When will you go to the gym, how often and for how long? The gym you choose should be convenient for you to attend. Think about when you will go. Before or after work? Then look for a gym on your route to work. (Check opening times too, if it doesn’t open until 9am you may not be able to get in before work). If you are going from home look for somewhere near to you. As a general rule of thumb no more than 15 – 20 minutes travel, if it becomes a hassle to go it becomes very easy to find excuses not to. 3. Equipment: What kind of workout are you after? What are your goals? If you want to get in to powerlifting are there enough weights, if you want to run check how many treadmills they have. Take a tour of the facilities, check the equipment is in good working order and clean. Visit at a time when you would be training to see how busy it gets. There’s nothing worse than spending half your workout waiting for a piece of kit to become available. 4. Other amenities: Do you just want a gym or would you like a pool or fitness classes included. Often there are different levels of membership available depending on the services you use. Don’t get caught paying for use of a pool if you never swim. What are the changing rooms and showers like and what other facilities and services do they offer? 5. Staff: What qualifications and experience do the staff have – you don’t have to have a fitness qualification to work at a gym. Are they motivated to help you and give advice, do they know other members by name? Nothing can help you reach your goals more than a knowledgeable member of staff giving guidance and advice. There are many options when it comes to choosing a gym from high end spa hotel gyms to basic budget gyms. Council gyms often offer best value for money but may not have as specialised equipment as a private gym. Shop around and be picky. Don’t sign up to a contract until you are sure. Visit several times and talk to other members to get their opinions. Finding the right gym for you is key to a healthy lifestyle. © Andy Lee pets All creatures great and small protected at Wollaton Hall Around 70% of Wollaton Deer Park has now been designated a nature reserve – giving wildlife extra protection. The designation of Local Nature Reserve covering areas of the woodland, heath and golf course, will protect habitats for wildlife and will benefit visiting nature lovers and members of the local community by giving opportunities to get involved and discover the wildlife on the site. Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area [email protected] reg charity: 702569 Wollaton Deer Park was chosen because it offers a wide variety of habitats including mature deciduous woodland, open water, bracken and long grassland, all of which support and provide homes for wildlife. Wollaton Park is well known for its 280 strong deer herd but it is also home to native and migratory birds, small mammals, invertebrates, trees and plants. Many areas of the reserve are inaccessible because they serve as a refuge for the deer at times of breeding and calving, and these provide untouched spaces for wildlife to thrive. Already a hugely popular destination, Wollaton will continue to provide green open spaces for visitors to enjoy as well as hosting major events such as Splendour. or contact 0115 837 6926 Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dave Trimble said: “The Wollaton Park Local Nature Reserve is great news for the local community and for the wildlife it contains. Protecting natural green spaces is doubly important because as well as providing a home for wildlife, it will hopefully encourage children and young people to get involved, take part in activities and learn about the variety and enjoyment which natural environments can provide. The Local Nature Reserve will certainly enhance the green space provided in Wollaton where people can relax, play, meet friends and unwind; it’s a great asset to the city of Nottingham.” To advertise call 0115 926 9777 or email: [email protected] 39 MUSICAL If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Where teens prove themselves good for something - social media. It’s like second nature for most of us now Ella Higginbotham aged 17 and we tweet, post and share on a daily basis. We know the familiar sounds of ‘’you’re never off your phone’’ or ‘’what do you do for all that time on the laptop?’ but this is such an easy way to socialise and talk to your friends with, let’s face it, very minimal effort. Facebook is great for those moments where you look in your suggested friends list and you see a name that you haven’t heard since primary school- it’s a blast from the past! What a great way to keep up to date with those people that you otherwise would have lost contact with completely (which is great for nosy people like me!). Facebook also makes you barely remember the days where you had to text each of your friends with gossip or weekend plans individually before you discovered the magical group chat. What a lifesaver! Social networks really do help you to keep up to date with just about anything. However, this does come with one big downside- the horror of the spoilers! When you miss the finale of your favourite programme but log onto social media to be hit with the ending that you’ve been waiting for all season! Then we very quickly close the tab like it will somehow remove the thing we just read from our memory! It’s possibly the biggest disappointment we can experience so just as a warning, avoid all social media until you have caught up! While social media is great for us the majority of the time, trying to explain the hashtags and shares to our parents and grandparents can be a colossal task! Also, some parents are obviously worried about strangers on the internet so just be sensible and don’t give them a reason to worry- stick with who you know! Be patient with those who might take a little more practice in getting used to this way Next of socialising so that social media can be enjoyed by everyone! Don’t forget issue: older members of the family may never have had computers let alone mobile Health & phones when they were our age!! But do Fitness for remember, speaking with people face to face and not behind a computer screen is teens much better when you get the chance. So don’t be a complete computer bugtalking can be fun to!
