Flu sends more than 500 Oklahomans to hospital
Since the start of flu season in late September, the Oklahoma State Department of Health reports that 517 people have been hospitalized with the
flu -- 168 of them during the week of Dec. 23-30 alone. There have been
nine confirmed deaths from the flu in this season in Oklahoma.
In Grady County, six individuals have been hospitalized but there have
been no confirmed deaths. In Caddo County, there have been two hospitalization and no deaths.
Local pharmacies are still giving flu shots. Wallgreens in Chickasha
have a shot that affects 3 different flu strains, and one shot that tackles four
different strains. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says it is not late to
get a flu shot. Even though it may not be a good match against H3N2, the
most prevalent strain reported this flu season, people who get the flu after
being vaccinated may experience milder symptoms. The vaccine also may
offer protection against other strains that emerge later in the season.
Healthcare Stat, a local urgent care and family practice facility reports
that they are seeing more patients the last 3 or 3 weeks. “We got a late start this year,” said Nurse Practioner Shawn Bonilla,

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when
someone is ill.
• Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of
fluids and eat nutritious food.
Influenza like-illness is defined as a fever
of 100 degrees or more combined with
a cough and/or sore throat. If you develop
these symptoms, but you do not have an underlying medical condition: get plenty of rest, drink
a lot of liquids, avoid using alcohol and tobacco, consider taking over-thecounter medications to relieve the symptoms of flu, (but never give aspirin
to children or teenagers who have flu-like symptoms) stay home and avoid
contact with other people to protect them from catching your illness, cover
your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze to protect
others from your germs.
Most healthy people recover from the flu without complications, however, there are some “emergency warning signs” that require urgent medical attention. In children, some emergency warning signs that need urgent
medical attention include: high or prolonged fever, fast breathing or trouble
breathing, bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, changes in mental
status, such as not waking up or not interacting; being so irritable that the
child does not want to be held; or seizures, flu-like symptoms improve but
then return with fever and worse cough, worsening of underlying chronic
medical conditions (for example, heart or lung disease, diabetes).
In adults, some emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include: high or prolonged fever, difficulty breathing, or shortness of
breath, pain, or pressure in the chest, near-fainting or fainting, confusion,
severe or persistent vomiting.
Seek medical care immediately, either by calling your doctor or going
to an emergency room, if you or someone you know is experiencing any
of the signs described above or other unusually severe symptoms. When
you arrive, tell the receptionist, or nurse about your symptoms. You may be
asked to wear a mask to protect others from getting sick.
Special concerns for people at high risk for complications from the flu
includes: people 65 years of age and older, children 6-23 months of age
(are at increased risk for influenza-related hospitalization), people of any
age with chronic medical conditions (for example, heart or lung disease,
diabetes), and pregnant women. Some of the complications caused by flu
include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such
as congestive heart
failure, asthma, or
diabetes. Children also
may get sinus and ear
infections.

The Chickasha Festival of Light board has chosen
to honor active duty military and veterans by holding a special viewing of the light displays in Shannon
Springs Park on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015.
The park will be open from 6-10 p.m. that night,
however the camels and horse carriage rides that were
a center of attention this year will not be available. Food vendors and free laser tag are expected to be on
hand.
Among those expected to attend is a group of
soldiers returning this month from deployment to the
Middle East.
The Festival wrapped up its regular season on New
Year’s and showed improved numbers over last year’s
weather plagued event, when inclement weather forced
2014 Festival of Light President Blake Elliott
the park to be closed early.
and 2015 President Ashley Donald (Washita Val Blake Elliott, President of FOL, said gross receipts ley Weekly photo by JJ Francais)
are up 60% from last year because more favorable
weather the city experienced in December. Last year, more than 40 percent of the park’s 3.5 million
lights were damaged by ice and wind.
The Festival is one of Oklahoma’s top Holiday tourist attractions.
“I believe Festival of Light helps put Chickasha on the map and brings people to our City,” Elliott
said “The whole time I was in Stillwater in college and someone asked me where I was from, most
knew Chickasha only by the Christmas Lights.”
For many, the Festival is family tradition including the Owen family of Norman, regular visitors
for the past years.
“We brought our children here as little ones and now their boyfriends and girlfriends come along
and someday their children will come here,” said Cindy Owen. Incoming FOL President Ashley Donald, who moved to Chickasha three years ago, is excited
about next year’s event.
“There are some great ideas if we have the money to implement them,” she said. “I have had a passion for the Festival ever since learning about it.
It is a vital part of Chickasha’s tourism.”
A $15,000 grant from the Chickasha Community Foundation will double the number of lights
on the giant tree at the park entrance.
Anyone looking to volunteer or donate is

Tuesday January 13th residents of Alex will have
the opportunity to vote in a Special Town Election. The voters will be asked to all the Town Clerk-Treasurer by appointed by a majority of the Town Board of
Trustees?
Ballots will allow a “yes” vote for the proposition
and a “no” vote against the proposition.
Also, residents inside the Bray-Doyle School District will be voting on two bond proposals. Proposition 1 will allow the school district to incur
an indebtedness for 10 years of $2.510,000 to provide
funds for the ‘purpose of constructing, equipping,
repairing and remodeling school buildings, acquiring
school furniture, fixtures and equipment and acquiring and improving school sites’.
Proposition 2 is for $300,000 ‘to provide funds for
the purpose of purchasing transportation equipment’. That tax is for 5 years.
Bond funds are collected through real estate taxes
in the area or district that is affected.
Boone-Apache School District is holding a Special
Election for District I-56 as well. Voters can vote early on Thursday January 8 or Friday January 9th from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Election Board Office in their respective counties. Otherwise regular precincts for the districts will be open on
Tuesday January 13 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Hourly pay will keep you poor!
by Dan Miller (www.48Days.com)
Wealth isn’t made by the hour – it’s made with ideas and
a plan of action.
If you make $15 an hour, you’re making $31,000 a year. A cost of living increase of 3-4% is not going to significantly change your financial position. Yes, you can do a
great job and ask for a 10% raise each year and in 8 years
you’ll double your income to $62,000. But that’s 8 years
Oil Changes - Oil Changes - Oil Changes
from now. And doubling your pay in an hourly position
is not going to happen – unless you bring new skills to the
table.
A better question is how can you make an extra $2600
a month starting now – to make that doubling of your
income be a reality this next year? What would that do to
your debt snowball? Here are some ideas to get your own
thinking started:
• Mow 10 yards weekly at $60 each
• Spend $1300 on old silver at garage and estate sales;
clean it up, know the market and double your investment

Blue Book chooses 2015 Ford F-150 as ‘Best Buy’
How He Made His Money
A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money.
The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said, “Well, son, it was 1932,
the depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel.
I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at
the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents.
The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire
day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a week, by the end of which I’d accumulated a fortune of $6.40.
Then my wife’s father died and left us two million dollars.”
Kelley Blue Book has named the new
aluminum-body Ford F-150 its overall best buy
of 2015.
“Our group of expert vehicle testers chose
the Ford F-150 as the overall winner in our Best
Buy awards because of its breakthrough aluminum body structure, its smooth and fuel-efficient
powertrains and its impressive collection of
thoughtful features,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book’s
KBB.com. The awards are intended to guide new car buyers looking for the best vehicles in
major segments.
