Friends of Library Chocolate Celebration is Friday at Epworth
Advance tickets are still available for the third annual Friends of the

“We encourage you to buy your ticket in advance,” said
Angie Lewis, Friends board member. “There will be a limited number available for sale at the door.”
Tickets can be purchased from Friends of the Library
members and at the Library. It is $6 for a box of six individual servings of chocolate treats chosen from any of the
17 groups manning tables this year.
There will also be other items available for purchase,
such as cakes, plates of cookies and other treats.
Table hosts include AAUW, Altrusa Club of Chickasha, Beholding the Child, Chickasha Area Arts Council, Chickasha Community Theater, Chickasha Kiwanis Club, First National Bank and Trust
Company, Friends of the Library/Library Board, Grady County 4-H,
Grady County Republican Party, GMH Auxiliary, Junior Social Workers,

About 450 people attended last year’s celebration, which
grossed about $4,500.
Proceeds from the Chocolate Celebration are used for
special projects or needs of the Chickasha Public Library.
Working with Librarian Lillie Huckaby, the celebration
this year will help fund renovation of the children’s area.
“They are totally re-doing the children’s area including shelves and
furniture,” Lewis said. “The major portion is included in the city capital
budget and we’ll fund the little things.”

Valentines Day Celebrated for Centuries
When all attempts to lure a reluctant lover have
failed, try a homemade love potion. A love potion’s
power is in the act of making it. While brewing the
ingredients and reciting the incantation, focus your
energy on your goal. Beware that while potions can be effective, they can
also teach you to be careful what you wish for. You
may discover that you needed a potion to bring your
love to you because you aren’t a good match after all.
Things You’ll Need:
Apple, pinch of cinnamon, pinch of thyme , pinch of
rosemary, pinch of sea salt, rainwater, cast-iron saucepan, crystal glass or vase, strainer, glass vial or jar.
While the history of Valentine’s Day is sometimes
debated, it clearly links back to a Catholic saint
named St. Valentine.
The problem is there are actually three St. Valentine’s -- one a priest, one a bishop, and little is known
about the third. All were martyrs.
In 469 A.D., Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 a day
to honor St. Valentine, one of these three men.
One legend says that a Roman emperor banned
soldiers from marrying in the third century, but St.
Valentine took issue with this. He became an advocate for soldiers and was executed as a result of his
outspokenness.
Another legend says St. Valentine was executed
for his beliefs in Christianity and just before he died,
he left a farewell note for a loved one and signed it
“From Your Valentine.”
A conventional and widely accepted belief about
the holiday itself is that Valentine’s Day grew out of
a Middle Ages tradition of celebrating Feb. 14 as the
day “the birds began to pair.”
History.com notes that February has long been associated with being a month of love, and Feb. 15 was
celebrated in ancient times as a fertility festival.
Whatever its origin, it took off, and the U.S. Greeting Cards Association estimates Valentine’s Day is
the second-most popular card-giving day of the
year, only to Christmas.
VALENTINE LOVE POTION
1. Collect rainwater in a crystal glass or vase the next
time it rains.
2. Slice an apple into thin slices. Place the apple slices,
rosemary, thyme, sea salt and cinnamon in a saucepan.
3. Pour the rainwater over the ingredients in the saucepan. If there is not enough rainwater to cover the ingredients, supplement the rainwater with spring water.
4. Cook slowly over low heat. Once the ingredients
start to simmer, stir them while reciting aloud the ancient love poem, Song of Solomon from the Bible,
chapters 1 through 8.
5. Simmer the love potion for 90 minutes.
6. Strain the potion and place in a glass vial or jar.
7. Dab the potion onto your pulse points everyday
during next week. If the object of your desire is near,
the potion will draw them to you.
WARNING: Do not re-brew the potion if your lover
has not come to you within a week. The potion may
take time to work and doubling the dosage may leave
you with a stalker on your hands.

California produces 60 percent of American roses, but
the vast number sold on Valentine’s Day in the United States
are imported, mostly from South America.
Approximately 110 million roses, the majority red, will

73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are
men, while only 27 percent are women.
Men buy most of the millions of boxes of candy and bouquets of flowers given on Valentine’s Day.

A Senate Review by Senator Ron Justice
The first week of the First Session of the
55th Legislature kicked off Monday at noon
with Gov. Fallin’s State of the State Address. She wants to focus on three major issues this
year including improving education attainment, lowering Oklahoma’s incarceration and
crime rates and improving the state’s health. My colleagues and I look forward to working
with her on these important issues to strengthen our workforce; save taxpayers money; help
former inmates become productive citizens;
and help Oklahomans live longer, healthier
lives.
This session, more than 2,000 bills were
filed by the Senate and House along with nearly 60 joint resolutions. The
Senate filed 815 of those bills and 32 joint resolutions. We have until
Thursday, March 12, to wrap up committee work. This week, Senate committees approved 24 bills and one failed to pass.
This year, I personally filed 14 bills dealing with various issues including agriculture, the pardon and parole process, the State Fire Marshal,
burning prohibitions, emergency response systems, elevators, waste disposal, historical societies and elections among others. None of my bills
were considered in committee this week.
The Senate Veterans Committee passed a majority of the measures this
week and I’d like to mention some of those important bills.
SB 713 would establish seven veteran outreach centers around the state
to help veterans who are struggling after returning from combat. The
centers would be administered jointly by the Oklahoma Department of
Veterans Affairs (ODVA) and the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health. The agencies will reach out to the nonprofit community to find those that
provide services to veterans and allow them to apply to partner with the
centers.
The idea for the outreach centers is mirrored after two highly successful
nonprofit outreach veterans’ centers - the Coffee Bunker in Tulsa, which is
supported by the Community Service Council, and Coffee & Comrades in
Oklahoma City, which is supported by NAMI OK. These centers provide
a safe, peer-supported atmosphere for veterans. These two facilities are
solely supported through donations and do not receive any state funds. They are also housed in donated locations.
Another important bill to protect our veterans is SB 115. It would require criminal background checks for perspective nurse aides who apply to
work in any facility approved and annually reviewed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a medical foster home in which care is provided exclusively to three or fewer veterans.
SB 201 will assist veterans in starting their own businesses. The bill
would create the Oklahoma Veterans Small Business Loan Act. The Director of the Department of Commerce along with the State Director of the
Oklahoma Small Business Centers would be responsible for establishing
the program subject to the availability of funding. Once implemented, the
program would operate with assistance from the Oklahoma Small Business
Development Center Network.
Lastly, SB 398 would require the ODVA to establish a program to provide assistance for the proper interment of honorably discharged indigent
veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. The program would aid in obtaining
any available burial benefits from the federal VA or through private organizations. It would also provide for a burial grant for any indigent veteran
or any person who qualifies for financial assistance as determined by the
ODVA.
These four measures will next be heard by the Senate Appropriations
Committee.

www.oksenate.gov.
