Along with our Board of Trustees, we want to let you know about a
transition that is taking place with the management and operations of
Temple Israel’s Early Learning Center. As of December 31, 2014, Day
Schools lease with Temple has come to an end. We thank Day Schools
for their ten years of dedicated service and management of our early
learning center. We appreciate the care they have provided children and
will continue to honor the memory of Day Schools founder, Laura Briley.
We are enthusiastic about a new partnership in early childhood education
at Temple Israel. As of January 1, 2015, Happy Campers Academy
(located at Utica and 15th St.) will expand and open a second site at
Temple Israel. Happy Campers Academy has an excellent reputation in
early childhood care in Tulsa for nearly twelve years. Our new program
will be called, “Happy Campers at Temple Israel – The Moe Gimp Early
Learning Center.”
We would like to thank our dedicated lay leaders who helped make this
transition possible, especially the members of our early learning center
task force: Stan Kessler, Jon Stolper, Phillip Burger, Dr. Cathy Kass, Mary
Rothman, and Cheryl Shane, along with staff members: Rabbi Karen,
Jennifer Lorch, and Klara Bode.

What’s In a Name?
A recurring question I get when studying Torah with
students of all ages is, “How do the books and weekly
portions get their names?” The books and portions are
named for the first significant word that appears in the
Hebrew text. The first Shabbat in January brings to us
the end of our first book in the Torah, Bereisheet, Genesis.
During the second Shabbat in January (1/9 – 1/10) we will
begin the next book of the Torah, Shemot, Names. Our
second book begins –
by Alfred J. Kolatch, which you can find at temple or
online. Please let the rabbis know if you would like your
child to take part in the Hebrew naming ceremony that
evening.
I look forward to celebrating Shabbat Shemot (The
Sabbath of Names) with you and your family on Friday,
January 9!
“Rabbi Shimon said: There are three crowns in life: the crown
of Torah, the crown of priesthood and the crown of royalty.
But the crown of a good name is greater than them all.”
(Pirkei Avot 4:13)
V’eleh shemot b’nai Yisrael ha’baim mitzrayim et Ya’akov ish
u’veito ba’u.
Rabbis cont’d
“And these are the names of the children of Israel that came
to Egypt with Jacob, each of them came with his household.”
(Exodus 1:1)
We look forward to a close partnership ahead with the owner
of Happy Campers Academy, Cindy Alonso, and Director,
Staci Walkup. Both Cindy and Staci come with significant
background and experience in education and early childhood
development. They are excited to work closely with families
and teachers at Temple to bring support, inspiration, and
quality experiences to each child.
Bereisheet takes us from creation to the birth of Judaism,
introducing the patriarchs and matriarchs, and through
the entire Joseph saga. Our first book ends with Joseph’s
death in Egypt. The storyline of Shemot picks up where
Bereisheet ends. We are reminded of the names of
Jacob’s sons who came to live in Egypt during the famine
in Caanan, and who remained there because life was
good. The stage is set for the rest of our Torah’s story –
the enslavement of the Jewish people, Moses becoming
the Israelite’s leader, the Exodus from Egypt, receiving the
Ten Commandments, and wandering in the desert before
reaching the Land of Israel.
Full time and part time spots are available. Happy Campers
at Temple Israel is now accepting applications. There is a
10% discount for Temple members. For more information,
please contact Cindy or Staci at 918-809-5898 or email
[email protected]. Please see the ad
on page 3 and share the news with friends. You can also
contact either of us with any questions or suggestions.
What’s in a name? Names have great meaning. They
tell a part of our personal and family history. On Friday,
January 9, as a part of our TGIS Service and Shorashim
Friday Night Family Shabbat Experience, any children
who have not yet received a Hebrew name will have the
opportunity to do so.
On Temple Israel’s 100th Anniversary, we sang, “L’dor
vador nagid godlecha – From generation to generation
we will proclaim your praise.” This new partnership is a
commitment to our future. We are excited to see more and
more “Happy Campers at Temple Israel.”

There are different ways to select a Hebrew name. You
can choose a Hebrew name that sounds similar to or has
the same meaning as the English name. You can choose
to name after a loved one, or even a biblical character. Or
you can choose a name that you like or that has special
meaning to you and your family. Parents and kids are
encouraged to contact Rabbi Karen and Rabbi Micah
to help select a Hebrew name. A good resource is, The

All in the Family

Justice Here and Freedom in Israel
Democracy. Social Justice. Freedom to be a Jew in Israel.
These themes come together in January at Temple Israel.
The election period for delegates to the 2015 World
Zionist Congress (WZC) begins January 15th, just days
before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a national holiday.
Dr. King’s life’s work was to seek justice and equality,
and we will celebrate those themes with Social Justice
Shabbat on January 16th. As Reform Jews, we have a
responsibility not only to shape a more just society in
the United States, but in in Israel, too. The WZC occurs
every four years in Jerusalem. By voting for ARZA, we
can help to ensure Israel’s future as a vibrant Jewish
democracy where religious freedom, equal rights for
women, and justice for minorities persist.
Mazal Tov to Ashley Kirkland who married Dan Hereid
in Richardson, Texas on November 21. Ashley is the
daughter of Gail and Jerry Kirkland and granddaughter
of Donna Matles and the late Sidney Matles.
Mazal Tov to Amanda Godwin-Dollarhite, daughter of
Gail Cohen, who gave birth to Benjamin Matthew on
November 23. Benjamin weighed 8 lbs and measured 19
¾’’.
Mazal Tov to Ben Jacobs and Inez Archuleta. They were
married in Albuquerque on December 13. Ben is the son
of Jeanne Jacobs and brother of Mike Jacobs.
Mazal Tov to Jennifer Lorch and Jeffrey Selco who were
married on December 28 in West Hills, CA. Jenn is
the daughter of Yvonne and Stuart Lorch and Jeff is the
son of Dianne Selco. All are invited to join the Temple
Family Friday Night, January 9 for a special wedding
blessing for Jenn and Jeff.
ARZA has created www.reformjews4israel.org to
explain how important this election is to our movement.
The purpose of the World Zionist Congress (WZC) is to
discuss the burning questions facing the Jewish world
and Israel influence the response to these questions.
The math is simple: Electing a large ARZA/Reform
Movement delegation to the next WZC will strengthen
Reform Judaism’s call for the values and ideals we
cherish – like equality, egalitarianism and peace – and
will grant the Reform movement greater influence
to shape what it means to be Jewish in the Jewish
State. Recently, ARZA and the Israeli Movement for
Progressive Judaism (the Reform Movement in Israel)
has led the fight for freedom of religion, gender equality,
conversion, marriage and divorce, and empowerment of
young adult leadership. Because of our success in past
elections (we are the largest representation) we have
been able to pass resolutions supporting these issues
and our positions offering an alternative to religious
extremism in Israel. We must keep this momentum
going. Decisions the WZC makes influence hundreds of
millions of dollars in funding that will be affect the status
of Reform Jews in Israel and across the world.
Mazal Tov to Shirley and Bob Dormont who are
celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Please join
the Temple Family on Friday Night, January 16 for a
special blessing and Oneg in their honor.
Mazal Tov to Mark Goldman and W.C. Goad on their
wedding January 18.
Mazal Tov to Dr. Harvey Blumental and his 40 years of
volunteer service as a faculty member at the OU School
of Community Medicine. The Headache Clinic will now
be known as: OU School of Community Medicine Harvey
Blumenthal, M.D. Headache Clinic.
Israel needs all of our voices. We look forward to seeing
you at Social Justice Shabbat on January 16th at which
we will have voting stations to make it simple for you
to cast your ballot and make your voice heard. You can
look forward to more information in the coming weeks
about how you and your friends can vote and build a
better Israel.

If you missed the Jewish Film Festival in October at Circle
Cinema, you can still see some of the movies by borrowing
them from the Temple Library!
The movie Sixty-Six takes place in 1966 when all of
England is in a frenzy over the World Cup, except for 12
year old Bennie. As his Bar Mitzvah looms closer, will it
be a disastrous day for all of England when the two big
events coincide? You’ll have to watch it to find out.
After the death of her mother, a woman discovers
family secrets in her family photo album in the semiautobiographical movie For A Woman. The main
character takes a journey into the past, pre-war France, in
order to solve the mystery.
Here’s what one host had to say:
“We had a wonderful Shabbat dinner last night and everyone
seemed to enjoy the evening. We sat around the table for
over 3 hours. The Shabbat tote bags were lovely. We sang,
chanted prayers, and got to know one another better. It was
a beautiful evening together and kudos to all who made this
possible.”
Prefer a documentary? Try When Comedy Went to
School. Some of the greatest Jewish comedians came
from the Catskill Mountains. Find out how that happened
and why when you watch this entertaining DVD.
Also new in the library’s DVD collection, the documentary
Dancing in Jaffa. A world famous dance teacher
hosts a very special program in Jaffa. He trains Israeli
and Palestinian youth to ballroom dance together for
competition.

at 6:30 p.m. This year’s Shabbat will honor Iris Chandler,
our Tikkun Olam Award recipient. Iris has been the
longest continually serving member of the Social Justice
Committee. She is a Senior Servings volunteer, has been
a Lunch Buddy at Marshall Elementary, and is active
with the Oklahoma Religious Coalition for Reproductive
Choice. We hope you will be present to help honor Iris,
a leader of social justice in our community.
Klara Bode
We are delighted to share that Jory
Bollinger has accepted a full time
position with Temple Israel in our
front office.
Jory came to us through Sooner
Staffing and many of you have seen
her smiling face or spoken to her on
the phone for the three months prior to her coming on
staff. Jory is a graduate of OSU and has had nonprofit
accounting experience working for the OSU Foundation
while attending school.
Social Justice Shabbat invites us to turn our minds
and hearts toward the issues of our day that call out
for repair and healing. Rabbi Karen, Rabbi Micah, and
Jennifer Lorch will lead an engaging, interactive sermon
discussion focusing on Jewish attitudes toward current
social justice issues.
Jory’s position at Temple is Bookkeeper and Event
Coordinator. She has already been a great asset to the
team by not only preparing invoices for payment, but
also keeping track of dues and donations among other
bookkeeping related duties. In addition, Jory takes your
reservations and has been on hand for major Temple
functions and holidays.
The oneg will offer several interactive stations with
opportunities to engage in acts of justice. Please join us
for this meaningful service.
Please come and say hi to her the next time you are in the
temple. Welcome, Jory!
Rabbi Tarfon taught, “It is not your duty to complete the task, but you are
not free to desist from it either” (Pirkei Avot 2:16).
Mitzvah Day
Sunday, January 18 from 9:30 am until noon
Sponsored by Temple Israel’s Shorashim Religious School
The entire Temple Israel family is invited to participate in Mitzvah Day, taking place over
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent
and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Mitzvah Day is an opportunity for us
to come together as a Temple family to help those in need in our Tulsa community. We will
kick our morning off with a communal bagel breakfast and empowering send-off. Make sure to
reference your Mitzvah Day mailing for the project choices and details. To sign up for a project,
email Jory at [email protected]. Contact Jenn with any questions after January 5.
Be sure to check your Bulletin each month for a different Mitzvah opportunity
sponsored by the Social Justice Committee.

JANUARY 2015
Ad Mea - The 1930s
by Rabbi Emeritus Charles and Nancy Sherman
a spacious Rabbi’s Study. A full-size pine-paneled
gymnasium with accessory shower and locker rooms
was in the downstairs.
At the first Board Meeting of 1930, the Secretary was
authorized to borrow money at a local bank to take care
of current bills – an indication of the congregation’s
financial status at the beginning of this decade. There
was also a problem with housing the Sunday School
student body. Rabbi Iola urged an adequate school
building must be provided by September 1, 1930 because
there were 129 students in the school.
A rejuvenated, well-housed Temple Israel Congregation
attended High Holyday services in 1932. As Rabbi
Pilchik said so eloquently, however: “As with the life
of an individual, so with the life of a congregation. The
bitter must come with the sweet.” The Depression
became more and more severe. There were families
in Tulsa’s Jewish community totally dependent upon
the Community Fund for their basic necessities.
Request after request confronted the Temple Board
for reduction of dues. Standard dues at that time were
$50 a year, and many congregants could not pay that
amount and asked for relief. Rabbi Iola volunteered
for two significant reductions in salary. In April 1934
Rabbi Iola became ill and was in and out of town for
the next year and a half and finally felt compelled to
resign before the High Holydays of 1935.
At the May 1930 Annual Congregational Meeting the
Board was authorized to sell the 14th and Cheyenne
Temple and “to purchase a new location for erecting
thereon a Temple suitable for the needs of the
congregation.” Rabbi Iola was given a three-year
contract, beginning September 1, 1930.
During the following months, the Board considered
ideas about what the new facilities would contain.
Consideration was given to several different properties
around 15th and 16th and Rockford, and finally a plot of
ground at 16th and Rockford was purchased for $11,000.
The congregation elected Rabbi Abraham
Schusterman, who was completing four years as Rabbi
in Athens, Georgia, and he was formally installed on
December 20, 1935.
A division within the congregation ensued. There were
those who wanted to build an entire new structure at
a cost in excess of $100,000. Economic conditions in
the country and for congregants were becoming more
acute, so there were those who wanted to postpone
construction indefinitely, and those who wanted a
scaled-back version of the original plans.
Rabbi Schusterman introduced a number of changes
which the Reform Movement was now implementing for example, a congregational Passover Seder, Kiddush
and Torah reading at the Friday evening services, robe
and tallis as the Rabbi’s pulpit apparel, and the Bar
Mitzvah ceremony. He also began Hebrew classes.
The sale of the 14th and Cheyenne property to the
Seventh-Day Adventist Church was consummated in
October, 1930, which means Temple’s first building had
served the congregation a total of only 12 years.
It was decided to build everything except the sanctuary.
Construction took approximately one year, and the new
Temple was formally dedicated on September 23, 1932.
The Depression-era economic situation continued
to plague leadership and congregation at large, and
Sisterhood continued to come to the rescue. In August
of 1939 a special Board Meeting was called for the
purpose of devising ways to identify and prosecute the
person or persons who painted huge purple swastikas
on the front Temple wall. World War II had begun.
The new Temple was a milestone in the architectural
history of Tulsa and synagogue building. It was of
white concrete with slight Byzantine architectural
design. (Detractors called it The Algerian Outpost.)
The auditorium accommodated 400 people, and the
interior featured a modern cycloramic stage. Adjoining
the auditorium was a completely equipped kitchen with
all modern appliances. Fourteen classrooms were welllighted and modernisticallly furnished, and there was
So by the end of this decade and at its quarter-century
mark, Temple Israel was enjoying its ninth year in a
very functional facility. The congregation numbered
about 150 families, and its popular and effective
spiritual leader – Rabbi Abraham Schusterman – was
beginning his fifth year of service. Religious education
was strong and Temple programming was healthy.
Slowly, congregation and congregants were beginning
to improve economically.
