Assessment
What is it? Why do it? What real purpose
does it serve? Is it taking time away from
instruction? What do educators do with
the results? All important questions to
answer about assessment.
Assessment is a way of checking on
student progress to personalize and
inform instruction. All assessments
should be purposeful, be a part of the
instructional process and the results of
assessment should be used to guide
instruction. Consider the graphic below:

of each type of assessment should have
a clear purpose.
Knowing how students perform is only
meaningful when instruction changes to
personalize learning. Teachers use the
information for that purpose. Based on
the analysis of the data, teachers will
change their instruction to meet the
individual needs of students in their
classrooms.
Information on performance is not only
important to parents and teachers, but
also to students. They have a need to
know how they are doing at school and
specific information about what they
need to be working toward.
Assessment does not exist as a silo. It
is part of the instructional cycle, is
vitally important to the success of
students, and when used effectively, will
support everyone’s goal of improving
the achievement of students.
Preparing for PARCC
Assessment Cycle
The cycle illustrates the interdependence
of teacher planning, implementation of
planning, along with the assessment of
student learning and, finally, the reporting
of assessment results and revision of
planning based on the results. It is in this
final stage of teacher reflection that the
real worth of assessment is presented.
When teachers use the data to inform
revisions, teaching becomes personalized
and all student learning is individualized.
Gone are the days when students got it or
didn’t and we simply moved to the next
curriculum topic. Assessment is a valuable
tool in ensuring student learning.
As educators, we have the professional
responsibility to guarantee that the
assessments are purposeful. Assessment
is a broad term and it encompasses many
types of tests.
There are short
screenings, short formative assessments,
PARCC Assessment Begins in
March!
The PARCC Performance Based
Assessment schedule is listed. More
information will be forthcoming from
both schools as to the specific times of
each test session. There are 3 test
sessions in ELA at all grade levels and 2
test sessions in Math at all grade levels.
PARCC requires two sets of

month of May. The specific dates of that
test will be shared with you as soon as
they are available.
The RI Department of Education requires

Volunteers needed for Scholastic Book Fair
The Lawn School Book Fair will take place February 2nd – 6th. Volunteers are needed each
day. The shifts will be from 8:15am- 10:30am and 10:30am – 12:45 pm. Please email Lisa

The Melrose Book Fair will take place January 30th and February 6th during school hours
and February 5th from 5pm – 8pm for the Fair and Ice Cream Social Family Night.

Flu season has hit RI and next Flu/Tdap (pertussis) free clinic sponsored by
RIDH is being held on Tuesday, January 13th from 5-8pm. The clinic will be
held at Westerly Middle School, 10 Sandy Hill Road. There is no cost to you.
They ask if you have an insurance card to please bring it but if you do not
have insurance you are still able to obtain either vaccine. Students entering Gr
7 in 2015-16 are required to have Tdap booster and it is strongly
recommended for pregnant moms and their adult family members who might
participate in the newborn's care.
Vision re-screenings will be this month for students in Grades 1 & 2 who did
not pass the screening.
Illnesses of the week: Lawn reports: fever, sore throat, stomach upset and
migraines.
Melrose: eye infections, fevers and stomachaches.

Arrival and Dismissal
Procedures
Morning Arrival: (8:00-8:10)




Buses will drop off students on the Watson Avenue side of the building.
Cars will drop off students near buses on the corner of Lawn and Watson Avenue.
In order to ensure the safety of all students, do not drop off students in the faculty
parking lot.
Walkers and bikers will go directly to the courtyard using the sidewalk.
Afternoon Dismissal: (2:40)




Buses will pick up students on the Watson Avenue side of the building.
Cars will pick up students on Lawn Avenue.
Walkers will exit out of the front door.
Bikers will use caution at all times and obey the rules of the road.
Notes:



If you need to come into the building during drop off or pick up, please park on Lawn
Avenue.
During inclement weather, the arrival and dismissal procedures will remain the same.
Students will report to designated areas inside the building.
If your child arrives after 8:10, park on Lawn Avenue and use the front entrance.
Thank you for your support in ensuring the safety of all of our students.
Melrose School Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Morning Arrival (8:00-8:15)
· Buses will drop off students at the main entrance of the building.
· Cars will drop off students at the Arnold Avenue entrance.

· Buses will pick up students at the main entrance of the building.
· Cars will pick up students at the Arnold Avenue entrance.
· Walkers will exit out the front door.
· Preschoolers will exit from the front door.
Notes
· We encourage all eligible students to ride their assigned bus.
· Students who walk exit from a different place than those who are picked up by car.
Please keep your child’s teacher informed of changes in dismissal plans.
· If you need to come into the building during drop off or pick up, please park on Melrose
Avenue on the west side of the street (as designated by signage). There will be no
parking in either lot at any time during arrival or dismissal.
· During inclement weather, the arrival and dismissal procedures will remain the same. For
arrival, all students will report to the Melrose Multipurpose Room.
· If your child arrives after 8:15, use the front entrance, park in either the side or front lot,
and sign your child in at the office.

Morning drop off coverage
begins at 8:00 a.m.
Melrose Car Safety
Listed below are the procedures for parents of students in Grades K-4 to follow for car safety
at Melrose School.

If you drive your vehicle to school, the safest method for pick up
and drop off is by the playground on Arnold Avenue.

If you choose to park on Melrose Avenue, children should use the sidewalks
and crosswalks and cross the street with an adult. Holding your child’s
hand would also increase safety.

Park on the west side of Melrose Avenue.

Be cautious and drive slowly when approaching the school during arrival
and dismissal times.
