Dear parishioners,
On Monday, December 29, and Wed., Dec. 31, the striping company striped the three portions of the St. Raphael
campus that had been milled and repaved on Aug. 19-21: (A) in front of St. Raphael Church, (B) behind the school near the
preschool playground, and (C) the area from there to Gropp Avenue. At my request, the vendor added access aisles for each
handicapped stall (space) and crosswalks (three in front of the church and three in front of the school; each crosswalk connects a curb-cut with a handicapped space). As I noted in my messages on Aug. 31 and Nov. 16, I delayed the striping (from
August) so that our facilities manager, Dan Compton, and I could meet with the vendor, to discuss the addition of crosswalks
and access aisles.
Although our parish – as a religious institution -- is generally exempt from the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990 (ADA), we designated fifteen parking stalls (spaces) for “handicapped” parking several years ago. In August, while the
parking area in front of the church was being re-done, it occurred to me that the handicapped stalls did not have access aisles.
When I searched for “handicapped parking” on the Internet, I learned that the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) require that each space be at least eight feet wide and have a five-foot-wide access aisle (eight feet wide for van-accessible spaces). The ADAAG allows adjacent stalls to share the access aisle. (The regular parking stalls are nine feet nine inches wide.)
Even though we are not required to have access aisles, I decided to add them for the convenience of parishioners, other worshippers, and other visitors to the St. Raphael campus who have handicapped license plates or placards and who need to be
able to open their driver’s door or passenger’s door completely, thereby making it easier for them to exit their vehicle without
bumping their door into the adjacent vehicle.
The ADA requires that when the parking area has from 201 to 300 stalls, at least seven must be designated as handicapped-only stalls. While adding access aisles, I decided to retain the fifteen existing handicapped stalls, including eight in
front of the church. Of the six stalls that used to be in front of the school, I moved one to the parish center, so that there are
now five in front of the school and two in front of the parish center. Of the eight handicapped stalls in front of church, one has
an eight-foot-wide access aisle, so that it is now van-accessible. (We will install a “van-accessible” sign post.)
The ADA also requires that the “designated path of travel” be striped when it crosses a “driving aisle” or street, to
inform drivers of moving vehicles that a disabled pedestrian might be crossing there. Another reason I decided to add crosswalks was for pedestrian safety in general, especially when our school children and religious-education (CCD) students are
arriving for classes and when they are being dismissed. Please drive slowly in the parking lot. In some parking lots, there are
speed-limit signs that specify “15 MPH”. The safety of pedestrians is more important than how quickly we can exit or drive
through a parking lot.
In the Tuesday, December 30, edition of The Times (Trenton), an article at the top of page 1 was entitled “Bishop
O’Connell undergoes surgery”. It stated that the bishop “underwent surgery Monday … for the amputation removing his left
leg below the knee.” According to Rayanne Bennett, executive director of the diocesan Office of Communications, “Bishop
O’Connell’s surgery was described as successful by his surgeons …. [After] a few days of observation, [he] will be moved to
[a] Rehabilitation Center …. He is expected to make a full recovery.” Cards and notes may be sent to: Most Rev. David M.
O’Connell, C.M., c/o Office of Communications, Diocese of Trenton, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Trenton, NJ 08648. Please pray
for Bishop, who – as diocesan bishop -- is the chief shepherd of the local Church of Trenton, which consists of 830,000 Catholics in 107 parishes in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties.
As many of you know, my eighty-four-year-old father, Owen Sr., has Stage IV prostate cancer, which has spread to
most of his body. He was discharged from the rehabilitation center on New Year’s Day at 5:23 p.m., after a week in the hospital and three weeks in the rehab center (for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nutrition). Thank you for the many
prayers you have offered for him and his family.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. On this final day of the season of Christmas, as we conclude our annual celebration of the first coming of Jesus Christ—our newborn King, the Prince of Peace—we pray for our fellow Christians in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa who are not able to practice their religion without fear and whose nations
are not at peace.
God bless you.

BAPTISMS in ST. RAPHAEL-HOLY ANGELS PARISH
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in our parish on
(usually) the first, third and fourth Sunday of each month
(except Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and the solemnities of
the Nativity of the Lord and of Mary the Holy Mother of God).
The first and third Sunday are at 12:00 (in Holy Angels Church)
and 1:00 (in St. Raphael Church). The fourth Sunday is during
the 10:30 and 11:30 Masses. Before the parish office can
schedule a date for baptism, the child’s parents need to give us
the sponsor-eligibility certificate for either (a) the intended godparent or (b) one of the two intended godparents (if there are to
be two godparents, i.e., a godfather and a godmother, with the
second godparent’s certificate to be presented before the baptism). (The sponsor certificate certifies that the intended godparent is a Catholic who meets the requirements to be a sponsor.)
To facilitate this process, I encourage you to call the parish office around four or five months before your unborn child’s due
date. (Please do not reserve a restaurant, until after you have
booked the baptism date with the parish office.) Please feel free
to contact our parish’s part-time, baptism coordinator, Mrs.
Meredith Beczo, in the parish office.
From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy
Communion is being distributed under only one species (the
Sacred Host) instead of both species (the Sacred Host and the
Precious Blood), because of the flu season. Under the principle
of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—Body, Blood, soul,
and divinity, whole and entire—under either species. Thus, we
do not have to receive both species at Communion.
There will not be confessions on the following day(s) in
January 2015:
2014 CHURCH DONATIONS
Because all parishes converted to the diocese’s financialaccounting software program last year, we will begin mailing
the 2014 church-donations statements on Monday, February
16. The form is on page 5.
GET-WELL WISHES for BISHOP O’CONNELL
On Monday, December 29, Bishop David O’Connell underwent
major surgery as part of his ongoing battle with diabetes. To
show our support for our diocesan shepherd during his extended rehabilitation and recovery time, our parish is sending him a
spiritual bouquet. Last week, after each Mass, at each exit
and at the Hospitality Sunday locations, many of you signed
the Spiritual Bouquet sheets and wrote a greeting, prayer, or
intention that you would offer for Bishop O’Connell — e.g., a
Rosary or an hour at the Adoration Chapel for his recovery. If
you wish to send Bishop a card or note, you may mail it to:
Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., c/o Office of Communications, Diocese of Trenton, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Trenton, NJ
08648.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 3, 7:30-9:00 pm,

THANK YOU
Thank you to all the people who helped decorate Holy Angels Church
for Christmas. Twelve people came and cleaned and helped decorate
the church. This made it go smoothly and rather quickly for such a very
large job. Then Fiori’s Florist came in and did a beautiful job with the
flowers. Steve Makrancy and his crew from Dragonfly Florist decorated
St. Raphael Church. Thank you also to all parishioners and others who
donated money to pay for the flowers and other decorations.

"Saintly Stories"
(The Good News from Saint Raphael School)
The 6th, 7th and 8th graders
celebrating language arts, called Integrated Language Arts
This year, the 6th, 7th and 8th grades are celebrating all things language arts, in one class, called Integrated Language Arts. Eighth Graders are
presently in the midst of writing persuasive essays and reading, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. In Seventh Grade, we are writing comparison and contrast essays, as well as, reading “Hatchet” or “Brian's Winter” both by Gary Paulsen. In Sixth Grade, we are reading “Freak the
Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick and writing descriptive essays, in which they will be thoroughly describing an object or place.
To begin, the Sixth Grade writing piece, we embarked on a journey by happenstance. Each day we write in our journals and on one particular
day, the students asked me about my hobbies, as that was, the topic of the day. When I mentioned :Geocaching,” their interests were piqued. I
explained to them that “Geocaching” is a high-tech treasure hunt where folks all around the world placed boxes in, out of the way places, and
then went online to share the coordinates of their treasures using the Geocaching website. They were captivated, they continued to ask questions about what one would do with these found boxes, and I explained that they would trade items with others by using these boxes and that
some people even placed items that had unique codes that identified them in order to track where the item had been. I showed them one of my
trackable items, a TravelBug named "Nala's Traveling Bug" that has been to Pennsylvania, the Bahamas, Seattle, and then back to the East
Coast. They were so interested in this concept, that I decided it would be a great idea to launch our unit on descriptive writing by launching our
own class TravelBug.
During the second week of November, we set our TravelBug into motion. A student brought in an item with which she was willing to part in order
to send it on a long and amazing journey. The students then named the item using descriptors and we ended up naming the item "Mrs. Pink
Puffy Panther Razz McGee". They described in imaginative details the origins of the creature and why she was traveling. In addition, students
also utilized a globe and their Social Studies textbooks to list all the places they hoped she would visit, including a hopeful visit to Vatican City. If
you would like to follow the progress of our TravelBug, please visit www.Geocaching.com and search the Tracking Code TB4GE56.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
To all our generous parishioners who in 2014 donated food and
monetary contributions, and to those who volunteered week after week
to assist in the food pantry, and on “Reach Out Saturdays,” we say
“God bless you” and thank you.
Without the donations and the help received from our parishioners,
and outsiders, the food pantry would not exist.
This year 2015 is starting, and the need to feed the hungry is still
ongoing. Donated food and monetary contributions will be needed for
the upcoming year.
At this time, there is a need for all types of food to keep our shelves
adequately supplied.
“HUNGER NEVER TAKES A HOLIDAY”
For the year 2014, over 4,000 families were supplied with food from our
pantry. Unfortunately, these numbers may grow in 2015, since both
federal and state government have reduced their budgets for the feeding of the poor.
Next “Reach Out Saturday” is January 24
9:00 am - 11:00 am, Parish Center
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the Holy Name Society will be held on
Wednesday, January 14, after the 7:00 pm Mass, and there will be
light refreshments in the parish center afterward.
FAMILY ROSARY NIGHT
The St. Raphael School PTA Spirituality Committee
would like to invite you to join us for the Family Rosary on Friday, February 6. This is an ongoing ministry that meets on the first Friday of each month
during the school year (except for the months of January and April). At 7:30 pm, in the All Purpose Room
below the church. For more information, please contact Lina Hollendonner at 609-499-0501 or email:
[email protected].
SOCIETY of SAINT VINCENT de PAUL
After Jesus was baptized, he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to
the poor , we also can heat these same words.
As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box,
know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and
you give them reason to believe and to trust.
For more information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and
the programs that reach out to those in need, please call the parish
office (rectory) at 609-585-7049.
NURSING HOME
Tuesday, January 13, 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Our next Bingo party for the
residents of Hamilton Grove Healthcare will be our Keep Warm Bingo.
Our special prizes this month will be afghans, throw blankets, hats,
scarves and gloves. Meet on the second floor of the facility which is
located on Hamilton Avenue, near the intersection of Klockner. All are
welcome, including Confirmation and other students!
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Thanks. We had a record turnout of parish volunteers—23 in all, including 3 first-timers and 3 students—who helped at TASK on New
Year’s Eve day. Volunteers served more than 400 hot meals, prepared
countless bags of snacks, and helped with mailing.
Wednesday, April 29, 10:00 am - 1:15 pm. Next serving commitment
at TASK. We meet in the St. Raphael parking lot for carpooling to Trenton, and return about 1:15 pm.
DONATIONS


Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, in December we
were able to distribute more than 2600 Christmas cards and 1050
of 2015 calendars.
One volunteer is already busy crocheting afghans, hats, scarves
and other items with the large amount of yarn donated this year.
For more information about either activity, or if you have a
suggestion for a new activity, please call Kathy Wooley at

YR 10,WK 21, Baptism of the Lord
Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
WORD TO THE WISE...
For those of us who still have at least remnants of Christmas decorations up, we are right in line
to finally bring the Christmas Season to an end. It has been quite a ride, witnessing the birth of
Our Lord; celebrating the inspirational Holy Family, the coming of the kings and subsequent
Epiphany that comes with that visit and now The Baptism of the Lord. It is no wonder we consider Christmas a season and not just a day. The Baptism of the Lord is loaded with spiritual fruits
for us to savor. The coming of Christ and the life of Christ is both salvific and inspirational, but
even more so, The Life of Christ is completely selfless. There is no need for Jesus to be baptized
by John the Baptist other than for our sake. The whole of Christ's life is for our sake. For God so
loved you and I He gives His only Son and in so doing The Son gives His Life as a ransom for all.
Though it is not considered politically correct anymore, when we contemplate Our Lord entering
time, we react by measuring history in BC (Before Christ) and then in AD (Year of The Lord).
There is no after Christ. Once Christ has come He never goes away. His Baptism this week is a
way of showing us our adoption is complete. It is a way of preparing us for the anticipation of His
death and resurrection. It is a way of solidifying His role in our world and in our hearts at the beginning of His public ministry! The culmination of this great event produces great imagery in the
waters of baptism, in the humility of John The Baptizer, the docility of the early disciples, the desire for repentance from those who enter the Jordan and finally, a rare scriptural manifestation of
the Triune God in all their Glory. As Jesus rises from the waters, a dove symbolizing the grace
and power of God in The Holy Spirit rests upon Him before The Divine Voice of The Father proclaims, “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased”. Before we enter a short period of
Ordinary Time, let us reflect on our own Christmas journey and ponder how we might embark on
our own public ministries. As we contemplate the great mysteries within this baptismal scene, let
us be confronted by the statement that we too have been adopted by God and that we too are
His beloved sons and daughters… and now we must find a way to be pleasing to Him. Happy
Christmas everyone.

ATTENTION: ALL ADORERS
REFLECTION
Dear Parishioners,
Many thanks to those of you who attended the Music Ministry
Christmas Concert this past Sunday. It was our joy to present music of
the season to this parish community. I would personally like to thank
the members of the music ministry who so generously gave of their
time and talent during this Christmas season.
I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to become part of the
music ministry. There are choirs for all ages and the Bell choir, for
those who would prefer to ring rather than sing. Just come to a rehearsal listed on the bottom of this page. No audition is necessary, just
a desire to praise God in song.
Today’s liturgies close out our Christmas season with the Baptism of
the Lord. In the readings today, we hear that Jesus is the beloved Son
of the Father, the light of the nations, and the Lord of all creations. May
Our voices sing His glory and praise.
On a personal note, I have been cleared to begin physical therapy.
Please keep me in your prayers.
God bless you,
Lori Hoos
