Fr. Joe’s Notes
My dear friends,
With the Feast of
the Baptism of the Lord,
we come to the end of
our Christmas season.
Ordinary Time begins
tomorrow. The decorations will be put away
and the lights turned off.
I always hear people say
it looks so bare without all the trees and garlands, but I think it looks clean. A lack of ornaments doesn’t need to depress us or ruin our
lives. Besides, how much attention do we give
all those decorations anyway?
At the Epiphany Party, I was asked by several people where we got that woman in the
crèche? I was puzzled at first, because I wonder
how you have a nativity without the Blessed
Mother? They were speaking about the figures
in the church at OLOV. The nativity set has a
shepherdess. I was asked, more than once, when
we added her. My answer was ‘never’. She has
always been part of the set. She has been in the
nativity every year since long before I arrived in
West Haven a dozen years ago. I had to laugh.
Not too many people were paying that much
attention to the decorations after all.
It made me appreciate some of the things
I had seen on my vacation this year. Germany
and Austria were great proponents of the modernist movement in Architecture. I went to see
buildings by Adolf Loos, an architect who wrote
‘Ornament and Crime’. I saw works by Joseph
Maria Olbrich and Ludwig Mies vander Rohe.
They were strong believers that ornament
should be from function and materials should
speak for themselves. To clutter up a building
led to ignoring the ornament and space. They
had a point. We tend to ignore the things that
decorate our spaces and be blind to what surrounds us. Too much of a good thing can really
be too much!
We have openings in our Mass book for the first
three months of the year. If you would like to
book a Mass in January, February, or March, call
the rectory office—even if you have others.

So here we are entering Ordinary Time.
There will be no fancy ornaments or poinsettias
all over the church. That’s OK. Now we get
back to the simple things of life and our spaces
will reflect that. Sometimes less really is more!
Gratefully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe
?
Ask Father
?
Question: Father, I know Confession is supposed
to be private, but don’t you remember people’s sins
when you see them outside the confessional?
Answer: Honestly, no. I admit that I do have a
very good memory, but I really do forget what
people say in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Why remember what you can’t know? When I’m
in the confessional, I listen like a teenager to his or
her parents or an employee to a boss. I recall
things only long enough to process a response and
give a penance quickly before I let what I have
heard leave my mind. As a regular confessor, I
would be able to recall things from the past only
in a manner that is helpful to the penitent. That
memory is really a site memory. I only recall
things while in the moment of the Sacrament. I
can explain it like this. If I were to ask you to say
the Gloria or Nicene Creed in the grocery story,
you most likely couldn’t. When you’re in church,
it comes naturally. That’s how a memory of regular penitents works. Once I leave the confessional,
it leaves my thoughts. Even if I hear something
very serious and troubling, I have to forget what I
heard as I leave. We have something called the
Seal of the Confessional. Canon Law states: “The
sacramental seal is inviolable; therefore, it is a
crime for a confessor in any way to betray a penitent by word or in any other manner or for any
reason (983).)” Violation of this law results in removal of all presbyteral faculties, meaning a priest
would be forbidden to function anymore. I value
my priestly ministry much more than I value any
silly information I could recall from a confessional. So even if I were to remember anything, and it
would be very rare indeed, I would just put it out
of my thoughts. And if in doubt about how I know
something, I just play dumb. Better to err on the
side of discretion than to disclose what should be
private. So if you tell me something and I forget
where I heard it, I simply won’t acknowledge it. So
come to me for the Sacrament of Reconciliation; I
will forget whatever you said.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Sunday, January 25 to Saturday, January 31, 2015
National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of
Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday
in January and runs all week, which in 2015 is January 25 - 31.
Schools typically observe National Catholic Schools Week with
Masses, open house and other activities for students and families. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic
education provides to young people and its contributions to our
church, our communities and our nation.
Our Lady of Victory School will begin its celebration with Mass
at 8:00AM on Sunday, January 25th, where several seventh
grade students will read their essays sharing how happy and
proud they are of their school. Mass is followed by an Open
House from 9:00-12:30pm and then awards will be presented to
our Science Fair Winners.
The students enjoy various activities throughout the week such as:
Career Day when friends and relatives come into school to speak to the students about their careers.
The students enjoy a free ziti and ice cream lunch followed by Bingo.
On School Spirit day students will come to school wearing the school colors of blue and gold.
Grade 8 students will perform skits based on the books of Dr. Seuss to the lower grade students. All
students will have free home-baked cookies.
