THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with
water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The
same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that
joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is
the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No
wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it
so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going
to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel
who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the
Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that
heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human
in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of
the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our
sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that
Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the
Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and
filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal
life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that
inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

Is Your Marriage Blessed by the Church ?
Archdiocesan Tribunal May Be of Help
Do you, or someone you know, have a problem with marriage in the Catholic Church because of a prior marriage
which has ended in divorce? When a divorced person remarries outside of the Church, he or she does not receive the
grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony, and separates himself
or herself from receiving the Eucharist.
The staff of the Archdiocesan Tribunal—a group of specially qualified priests, sisters, and lay persons with the responsibility to assist persons who have experienced divorce– can
possibly be of help.
The Tribunal
222 North 17th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19103-1299
215-587-3750 http://archphila.org/tribunal/
The annulment procedure is designed to study the history of
the marriage and why it failed. It does not affix blame. A
Decree of Nullity has no effect on the legitimacy of children, or other matters such as custody or property settlements which are decided by civil law. If the marriage is annulled, both parties are free to marry in the Catholic Church.
If you are divorced and remarried outside the Catholic
Church, please contact the Tribunal Office. All interviews
are private.
Couples married outside the Church with no previous marriages should see Father Hand, or Deacon John Ellis.

The World Meeting of Families Prayer
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world
be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

SUNDAY , JJANUARY 18 BULLETIN—
DEADLINE
MONDAY, JANUARY 12 @ 12 NOON
What’s in a Name? Have
you ever wondered how our parish got its name?
Our first pastor, Reverend Joseph P. O Neill, was the brother
of Reverend Francis O’Neill,
the pastor of our parent church
of St. James the Greater (today
St. Agatha St. James) from 1874
to 1882. It was Francis who
commissioned the construction
of their church at 38th and
Chestnut, but before it was completed, he died tragically at age 39. Joseph had joined him
there as assistant starting in 1877. A parish history notes
that “In 1890, Father Joseph was appointed to found the
parish of St. Francis de Sales and it is said that he named
the new parish in honor of his brother” who was named
after the saint.
“Saint Francis de Sales” proved to be a singularly
fortuitous name, connecting us with our origins at St.
James, and our future in the neighborhood.
The original Saint Francis de Sales was a Bishop
and Doctor of the church -- a lawyer and a very smart guy
– famous for his ability to manage religious divisions, and
for keeping the Catholic faith alive during difficult times in
Europe in the late 1500s and early 1600s. Putting faith in
action, he lived simply, worked for peace, and championed
the poor.
When SFDS parish was formed in 1890, we are
told that neighbors were reluctant to sell land for a Catholic
church because Catholics were thought to be very insular,
sticking to their own communities, opening their own
schools, and swearing allegiance to a foreign Pope.
Perceptions changed over time. Seventy years later,
in the turbulent 1960s, a history of the Lutheran Saint John
of the Incarnation church (then at 47th and Cedar), notes
that “The area surrounding the Incarnation Parish faced
integration much better than other neighbors, due to the
foresight of the Roman Catholic Parish, St. Francis de
Sales. Determined to not allow their neighborhood’s destruction through fear and ignorance, the people of de
Sales welcomed their new neighbors and set an example of
working together to find common interests and experiences.
This spilled over to people of the Incarnation Parish as
well...”
What would St. Francis ask today?
If you can help with the 125th Anniversary or have history
to share, please contact [email protected] or
come to the next meeting on February 2 at 7:00 PM in the

Auditorium.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Please join the parish in praying this prayer to our
Blessed Mother regarding the sale of the MBS Buildings.
MEMORARE
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your
protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I
fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I
come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
