Baptism of the Lord
First Reading: Isaiah 55: 1-11
Today’s reading is from a part of Isaiah written when the
Jewish people were exiled in Babylon, which is in modern
-day Iraq. This section if often referred to as the “book of
comfort” because of the encouragement it gives. Today’s
passage is the finale to this “book of comfort” and uses the
image of poor people being invited by God to a joyful
banquet.
Second Reading: 1 John 5:1-9
In this passage, the author of the first letter of John emphasizes belief in Jesus Christ as Son of God. He uses phrases
and symbols which describe Christ’s baptism, death and
resurrection. The Spirit, present at these events, testifies to
Christ as son of God. Such testimony is far superior to any
human witness.
Scripture Focus: Mark 1:7-11
The Christmas season comes to an end with this feast of
the Lord’s baptism. God reveals his son to us as Jesus begins his work. The creation account in Genesis tells us that
the spirit hovered over the waters and brought forth the
world out of chaos. In the account of the baptism, Jesus
comes up out of the water and the spirit descends upon
him as a sign of God’s favor. A new world is created in
Christ.
Living God’s Word
At baptism, the Spirit came upon you in the presence of
the Christian community, claiming you in Jesus’ name,
and God said, “You are my beloved son/daughter.” Spend
some time praying over these words. What do you say to
God in return? How does it affect what you do in life?
YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE
If you want a better understanding of our faith, and a
deeper relationship with God, then you should join us for
The Bible Timeline Study.
The study will include a series of twenty-four videos presented by Jeff Cavins. (Perfect attendance is not necessary.) Each video will be preceded by a lively group discussion.
St. Ambrose will continue The Bible Timeline each
Thursday, at 9:00AM and 6:45PM in the Pastoral Center.
For more information contact Mary Ann Bray at 4654049.

fundraisers are held throughout the year to keep tuition
costs down. Our main 2 fundraisers are the Applefest, and
the auction in January. Please VOLUNTEER and PLAN
to attend the auction on January 31st.
**Please continue to collect box tops and soup labels for
St. Ambrose School. Thank you so much for helping our
school.
