Free Income Tax Assistance The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in conjunction with Anne Arundel County Senior Centers. VITA operates during the income tax preparation season from January until April each year. VITA operates at all of the county’s seven senior centers. It is staffed by volunteers who are trained and qualified annually by the IRS to help seniors with uncomplicated, SIMPLE tax returns. The volunteers cannot help with rental property, business returns and multiple stock trades. VITA volunteers will be working at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center beginning the first week of February until the first week of April. The center, however, will begin taking appointments on January 2015. Hours are limited and an appointment is required. No walk-ins will be accepted. Call 410-222-6847 for an appointment. $$ TOUCH SCREEN SIGN IN $$ It is extremely important that you scan your key tag and “touch” the activities that you plan to attend each day you enter the center. If you do not have a key tag, come to the office and one will be issued. Data on activities is collected for the purpose of government accountability. Senior Centers are funded by tax dollars. Data collection provides proof that tax funds are serving the appropriate numbers of citizens and justifies funding levels for facility upkeep, staff salaries and programming. Data is also used to plan for the future. Attendance tracking can help center managers decide the best use of space and identify trends. Help us continue to provide programming excellence by “touching the screen” with your program selections each day you are at the center Open Public Computers Members may sign up to use a computer during scheduled hours. There is a one hour limit when there is a waiting list. Anne Arundel County Senior Activity Centers offer free membership to individuals 55 or older who are active, self-sufficient and able to function independently. For more information, visit your local senior center to obtain orientation materials and take a tour. Adults age 55 or older who need assistance with daily living activities, or their caregivers, should contact Information and Assistance at 410-222-4257 to learn more about alternatives to Senior Activity Centers. Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center AACo Police Liaison AACo Police will respond to seniors’ inquiries about safety concerns, community complaints, scams and other law enforcement issues. Contact Corporal Jimmy Miller at 410-222-0080 Page 4 Anne Arundel County Representative Payee Program The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Service has provided a voluntary Representative Payee Program to its adult citizens since 1990. Working with the Department of Aging and Disabilities, the Representative Payee Program is growing to provide financial management services to physically and/or mentally impaired residents who are not fully capable of managing their limited income retirement/social security checks. Clients must be able to participate in directing the use of their funds and are actively engaged in spending decisions. Some adults we know have limitations that prevent them from paying their bills on time. Other vulnerable adults may have family members or friends who take their monthly income for personal use. Occasionally, physically or mentally impaired adults feel at risk for housing eviction and are in debt to creditors due to money mismanagement. Perhaps you can think of someone you know that could benefit from the services of a Representative Payee. Representative Payees go through an application process and background check. Training is provided and qualified volunteers are matched with a client and commit to visiting them on a monthly basis. A Representative Payee keeps track of client expenditures, balances their checkbook, and submits monthly reports to an Advisory Board, who oversees the management of program accounting practices. Seniors or Senior Center Directors can contact a Maryland Access Point (MAP) representative at 410-222-4257 to initiate a client referral into the program. Please contact Chris Poulsen at 410-269-4460 or Nancy Weiman at 443-685-4294 if you need additional information about the Representative Payee Program. The votes are in and the ballots have been counted! Congrats!
