From Dr. Lytch
So we do not lose heart. Even though our
outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature
is being renewed day by day. For this slight
momentary affliction is preparing us for an
eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,
because we look not at what can be seen but at
what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is
temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
The passing of another year reminds us that time is moving along,
and with it what the apostle Paul calls “our outer nature.” Many
of the opportunities and possibilities that awaited us a year ago
have come and gone. Promise became reality which in turn
became memory. We have some degree of control over what we
do in the time in which we live, but we have no control over time.
It moves relentlessly on, stopping for no one.
Yet it is into this everflowing stream of time that God meets us.
Even as our outer nature is wasting away, “our inner nature is
being renewed day by day.” Each day God prepares us for
eternity, when our existence won’t be determined by the clock,
whether the clock on the wall or the biological clock. Each day
offers an encounter with grace, an experience of God’s neverfailing mercy that prepares us for what is to come when time as
we know it is complete.
The New Year belongs to God. The Holy One is waiting to meet
us there. May each day bring you closer to Him.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Lytch

Caring Company Update
Calendar year 2014 has been a busy one for the Caring Company. Midway through the year, we hired a new employee. The addition of a willing
and skillful hand has allowed us to help more families this past year, particularly with utility work. Additionally, we received exemplary ratings
from both Dollar Energy Fund (100%) and First Energy (99%) for our
work with clients and their utility needs. So, we have much to be thankful
for here at the Caring Company.
I’m also thankful for the great spirit of giving at FPC: this fall we have
seen a marked increase in food donations from the congregation. In an
average month, we get about 250 pounds of food via donations. In October, thanks to the Fill the Boat campaign, we received over 900 pounds of
food during October. This is impressive enough, but the congregation
took it upon itself to keep giving, which resulted in another extraordinary
contribution of nearly 600 pounds of goods in November. Many of these
donations were targeted items that are often find hard to come by at a reasonable price – items such as peanut butter, jelly, canned meats, soups,
and toiletries.
Finally, I’m writing this monthly report on Monday, December 15, the
first day of our Christmas Giving Tree distribution. Over the next two
days, we will give out approximately 280 gifts to the children of the 120
families that registered for the 2014 Christmas Giving Tree. There will be
many volunteers in the church later this afternoon, and we anticipate a
wonderful time. Upon arrival, each family will be treated to light refreshments. Then, gifts will be given to the children (age 12 and under). Parents also will receive a gift – this year, the congregation knitted and donated a large amount of scarves and mittens, and each adult parent will
receive a scarf and a pair of mittens. Afterwards, as they leave the building, each family will receive a bag of food items to ensure they can prepare a holiday meal for their family.
This effort would not have been possible without the help of a small
group of FPC members and Caring Company volunteers and workers. So,
I would like to take this time to thank Sharon, Jan, Bev, Amanda, Bill and
John (for food), Sophia, Joan, Sally, and Leslie for all their hard work to
ensure that this year’s Giving Tree is a success. (I’m certain I have forgotten someone, and if I have please feel free to contact me about my omission.)
Thank you for making 2014 a wonderful year at the Caring Company.
May you all have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year full of
blessings!

The
Ruth Kammer
Food Pantry
Ever wonder how things get started?
After collecting food for Thanksgiving 29 years ago, Ruth Kammer and
Margie Gladding recognized the continuing need in our community for
a food ministry. Ruth says they understood that people needed help with
food all year long, not just on holidays. So in May, 1985, they began a
request for monthly food donations at FPC. Items were bagged with
balanced meals for 2-4 people. Over time, the mission Ruth and Margie
organized became part of the ministry of the newly formed Caring
Company. They had no idea this would continue to be such a viable
ministry in 2014, but thanks to their initial efforts and FPC members
continued support, we are able to continue to fill this very basic need.
Ruth faithfully continued working with the monthly food collection by
preparing articles to encourage giving, listing needed items in the
bulletins and newsletters. She faithfully worked with each of the Caring
Company directors as our outreach grew to distributing school
uniforms, Christmas gifts for children, and ordering items from the
Food Bank. Her liaison efforts between the congregation and the Caring
Company proved fruitful. At this time, monthly food distributions
average almost 1.2 tons!
Accordingly, the following motion has been approved by Session:
“In honor of and gratitude for the decades of tireless
Christian service to this congregation and the greater York
community, the Session of First Presbyterian Church of
York hereby designates the food pantry of the Caring
Company as The Ruth Kammer Food Pantry.”
A plaque commemorating the occasion will be place in the Kerr
Education Building.
First Presbyterian Church has been truly blessed by the dedication and
service of Ruth Kammer for the past 68 years. As she enters the next
phase of her life in Florida, we wish her all the best. She will be missed.

Adult Education
It’s a new year for learning! Resolve to be intentional about being in
God’s Word for 2015. Here are the ways you can commit to learning
this year! Please take advantage of one of these opportunities to grow
in your faith. Bring your questions, bring your desire, bring your
thoughts!
Shine at Nine - 8:50 a.m. Sunday in Room 209
FINDING GOD IN THE MOVIES,
TV, POP MUSIC & MORE
Does Jesus show up at the box office? Can we watch TV to the glory of God? Can we glean authentic spiritual insights from the latest
rock stars? Should people of faith care about who is on the cover of
Rolling Stone or People? What should Presbyterians think about
video games, fashion, or the latest digital trends? This upbeat, interactive class will help us think about our popular entertainments
through the eyes of faith, equipping us to be more aware of theological insights and truths that can be found in the popular arts. There
will plenty to talk about with video excerpts to watch, music to hear,
and maybe some comedy sketches to evaluate. With eyes wide
open we can learn to faithfully discern how to best engage the exciting worlds of contemporary culture.Byron Borger will be teaching
both the Shine @ Nine and Perspectives classes.
Perspectives - 10:00a.m. Sunday in Room 209
FINDING GOD IN THE MOVIES,
TV, POP MUSIC & MORE
This is the same material being offered at the Shine @ Nine class, so
you can choose the time that suits you best! Byron Borger will be
teaching both the Shine @ Nine and Perspectives classes.

HomeBuilders - 10:00 a.m. Sunday in Room 301
The class most recently known as "home builders" spent
the month of December discerning their next
step. They have been brainstorming about a new name, a new
curriculum and a renewed focus with emphasis on expanding the
demographic and welcoming new members. January is a great month,
full of new beginnings and new chapters: Stay tuned for upcoming
announcements! Join us on this new journey of learning. The class will
meet on the second floor of the education building in room 300. For
more information, contact Jenna Reedy (880-2134) or Stacy Shaffer
(225-6347).
Women’s Class - 10:00 a.m. Sunday in the Parlor When we look around at today’s world, hope may not
be the first word that comes to mind. The woman’s class
will begin the year with a Bible study and DVD series
on Jeremiah using the book Jeremiah: Daring to Hope
in an Unstable World. Join us as we find God calling out His people
with a message of hope- a message of intentional living that is possible
even in an unstable world. How do we do it? Where do we start? Come
and discover how to navigate the challenges in your lives. For more
information, contact Jill Raudensky, facilitator of the group.
Women at the Well - 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday in Room 302
All women are invited to join us on Wednesday nights at
6:00 p.m. for Bible study and fellowship. It is a new year
and a time to start new habits of intentionally being in
God’s Word. Laura Byrne will be leading the Women at the Well Bible
study. She is a seasoned teacher and brings a great wealth of
knowledge and passion for God’s Word. The women will begin a study
of the book of the Bible beginning January 7. The group will meet in
the senior high classroom on the second floor of the education building.
So bring your Bible, your questions, and a desire to learn! For more
information, contact Laura Byrne or Wendy Smith.

Mothers’ Bible Study (Moms)
This year, we are using Lisa Harper’s Stumbling
into Grace as our guide to discovering how to be
authentic and faithful Christian women, wives,
and mothers. Described as being “part diary, part
devotional, Stumbling into Grace weaves
hilarious and poignant stories from Lisa’s own
life with intimate and transformational
encounters from the life of Christ.” Come join us
as we read, reflect, and pray together on Tuesday
mornings 9:15 till 11:00 a.m. If child care is
needed, please notify Heidi Cavanaugh (2256243) or Katie Berkebile (747-8929). You and
your children are always welcome.
On Tuesday, December 16, MBS celebrated the holiday season with
our Christmas Brunch before taking a two week break. The group
gathers again on January 6 and will finish up Lisa Harper’s study
before launching a new study. Newcomers will find it easy to join
the study in progress.

The gift of courage
Courage by Bernard Waber (Ages 5 and up) Courage is trying new
things such as a strange vegetable or riding a roller coaster, or
meeting new situations such as having to say goodbye. A good book
to use to talk with children about courage in their lives.
When Jackie and Hank Met by Cathy Goldberg Fishman (Ages 5
and up) "Some of Jackie's neighbors threw rocks at him because he
was black. Some of Hank's neighbors threw rocks at him because he
was Jewish."
Both Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg
experienced prejudice as children and adults and chose to become
leaders working for the rights of all people. Jackie was the first black
baseball player in the Major Leagues, playing for the Brooklyn
Dodgers, and Hank was one of the first Jewish players, playing for
the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates. (Well written and

“Impractical Joking” debuts on January 30!
Tickets are on sale NOW for the 16th Annual Feaste of St. Valentine!
Come be a part of the fun as the youth of FPC entertain you with
“Impractical Joking,” an original comedy by Paul Brown, while raising
money for youth mission activities!
So-what is a Feaste? It's a Medieval Dinner Theater experience! It's a
two-act comedy featuring the youth of the church. It's a chance to
interact as guests of King Malcolm and Queen Meagan while enjoying
a delicious roast pork meal and a fun, family friendly show. And,
during the meal, you can surprise that special someone with a ROSE
SERENADE - a custom-written, 8-line song presented by the royal
minstrel and his troupe and accompanied by a beautiful red rose.
In this year's Feaste, King Malcolm and Queen Meagan are hosting a
very important peace summit with the French King and Queen.
However, the kingdom has been hit with a rash of practical jokes that
threaten to undermine the peace talks if they continue! Will England
finally establish peace with France? Will the pranksters handiwork
embarrass the French visitors? Come see "Impractical Joking" on
January 30 and 31 to find out! Buy your tickets - and order your Rose
Serenades - by visiting the table in the Gathering Place on Sundays or
by calling the church office. Be sure to invite family, friends and
neighbors for a night of laughter and delicious food!
We'll see you at the Feaste!
