the Gathering Place
A Caring Community for Those Touched by Cancer
Healing the Mind, Body &
Spirit with Gentle Movement
S
ince we opened our doors in 2000, we have offered a variety of gentle exercise
programs, including yoga and tai chi. Men and women, young and old, cancer
patient or cancer caregiver, sitting or standing, our classes have been well received.
Our participants have let us know that yoga and tai chi has helped them sleep better, take less
pain medication, and restored their balance and range of motion. There are so many benefits
from the simple practice of meditative movement; and you do not have to get twisted into
difficult pretzel poses or stand on your head to feel the benefits.
One of our yoga instructors, Nancy Burgard, says “Yoga can be helpful to those diagnosed with
cancer because reducing the stress and anxiety can aid in having an attitude of hope. Yoga may increase
the body’s physical and emotional healing.” It offers a way to take an active part in their recovery.”
Michael Stadul, our tai chi instructor told us “Tai chi focuses on wellness and disempowers
illness. It exercises the mind, the body and the spirit, to find a balance.” His participant’s comments
include: “Tai chi is very relaxing and besides that it’s fun!”; “I had a mastectomy and it’s really helped
my range of motion.” And, most powerful of all, “Tai chi has given me a new life.”
Dympna Ferrante, another one of our yoga teachers says “Yoga may help reduce stress
and fear and relax the body and mind so that someone with cancer can better receive the healing
power of their treatments.” She is regularly rewarded by participants at the end of class saying
“I cannot believe how good I feel now!”
Our tai chi instructor Susan Cady notes that, “Tai chi can allow the body’s energy to run
smoothly, melting aches and pains, gently massaging away chronic tension.” She has heard her
students say things like “My shoulder is open,” or “My back and knees feel better.”
Academic research supports these endorsements. In a recent literature search on tai chi,
yoga, and cancer, over 250 articles were found. A paper published in November of 2014
concludes “Yoga intervention could significantly reduce the overall fatigue in breast cancer patients
with chemotherapy.”1 Another study from the same year found “Qigong/tai chi had positive effects
on the cancer-specific quality of life, fatigue, immune function and cortisol level of cancer patients.”2
We encourage you to try our yoga, tai chi or qigong classes which are designed to
accommodate you whether you are a beginner or have some physical challenges. As the cold
weather keeps us indoors, let our experienced and nurturing instructors help you move more.
See page 10 for our gentle movement programs.
