You can use your mobility allowance
to lease a car, scooter or powered
wheelchair on the Motability Scheme.
Our car lets us attend
Joshua’s hospital
appointments without
the worry of how we
will get there.

What is the Motability Scheme?
The Motability Scheme makes it possible for
you to lease a new car, scooter or powered
wheelchair without the worry of owning
and running one.
You use your government-funded mobility allowance to join
the Motability Scheme and all or part of the allowance is
transferred for the duration of the lease. You can apply to join
the Scheme if you receive one of the following:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living
Allowance (DLA)
Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal
Independence Payment (PIP)
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
Before, I had to rely
on other people,
but now I can go
out on my own.

Cars and Wheelchair Accessible
Vehicles (WAVs)
With the Motability Scheme you
can lease a car for three years or
a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
(WAV) for five years.
Vehicle adaptations are available through
the Scheme to help with vehicle access,
equipment loading and driving.
Even if you do not drive, you can nominate
somebody to drive the vehicle on your behalf,
as long as the vehicle is used for your benefit.
This means that parents and carers can join
the Scheme on behalf of a child aged three
and above.
What’s included?
The lease of a new vehicle with:
Insurance
Servicing and maintenance
Full breakdown assistance
60,000 mileage allowance over three
years for standard cars: 100,000 for WAVs
Window and windscreen repair or replacement
My Motability
vehicle enabled me
to live at university
independently and
to travel home when
I needed to.
Aaron
Many adaptations at no extra cost

Vehicle tax is arranged annually
You either pay your total weekly allowance or part of your
weekly allowance to lease a vehicle, depending on the car you
choose. For more expensive vehicles, you will need to top-up
your allowance by paying an Advance Payment (AP). You can see
the full range of cars available through our online car search at
motability.co.uk/cars-and-wavs
In some circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help
towards Advance Payments, adaptations, WAVs or driving
lessons. For more details, please call 0300 456 4566.
