Library Link to the Orion Community Orion Township Public Library | Winter/Spring 2015 Update on Renovations at the OTPL During the summer of 2013, the library did a new strategic plan that showed us the need to focus on our physical space. During the fall of 2014, the library spent time and resources to renovate the lobby. We added electrical, painted the walls, installed new flooring, and replaced furniture. We added the option for self-checkout. We can’t thank you enough for your patience with us during the project, especially when our lobby was closed off from public use. Overall, we are pleased with our new lobby, and we hope that you are too. As we look to 2015, we turn our attention to our youth area. We have a new design for that space that will enable us to create new age-appropriate spaces, for early literacy (ages 0-5) and for our older children (ages 6-12). In addition, we will be able to move all our youth items into the youth space (including the DVDs) and create a nice area for our popular materials for our young patrons as well. SAVE THE DATE A Thousand Letters Home Monday, March 9 @ 6:30p (more details on page 3) International TableTop Day Saturday, April 11,10:00a-4:00p (more details on page 3) 3,000 Miles by Bicycle Saturday, April 18 @ 10:30a (more details on page 3) The work in our youth area will, again, create some dust. We will be adding electrical, painting, and replacing the carpeting as part of this project. New furniture will be installed in the youth area as well. We will be shifting parts of the youth collection into the meeting room at times in order to best allow contractors access to the space. We appreciate your continued patience with us as we work through phase two of our renovation project. We are very excited about the new opportunities that come with our renovated spaces, and we look forward to continuing to provide the best customer service to our community! Did You Know? Some resources may be unavailable at times. We appreciate your patience with us as we work to improve the space for our young patrons. Sign up online for Youth Programs at orionlibrary.org/calendar/ or by calling 248.693.3002 9 From the Director First, I want to thank each of you for your patience with us as we worked through our lobby renovation the past couple of months! As you may know, we had to close our lobby from use by the public and re-route patrons through our meeting room to enter/exit the library. This enabled our contractors to have access to most of the space they needed to get the hard work accomplished. We could not have done this without your patience and cooperation during the renovation. So thank you! Which leads me to another personal thank you – to all of our wonderful library volunteers! We could not do what we do without all of you. We have volunteers from teens through seniors who complete some extremely important projects at our library. For example, many volunteers helped us with our RFID security system migration project, as we had to change the security on every item in the library! We had a great group of teen volunteers put on a Haunted House for our kids last October. And we have a core group of Friends of the Library volunteers that put on their regular book sales and other library fundraisers. Allow me to repeat myself – we could not do what we do without all of you! We are always looking for new volunteers as well, so if you are interested in helping out the library, please fill out an application at: orionlibrary.org/volunteers and we will contact you. Library Wishlist Don’t forget to check out our Library Wishlist. This online webpage lists some of the many things that the library would like to purchase, but they are beyond the scope of our budget. If any of the items on the list are of interest to you, perhaps you could donate to the cause. Donating is easy and can be done right online. You can check out our Wishlist at orionlibrary.org/library-wishlist/. Back to School with Lynda.com Orion residents with a valid library card can receive unlimited access to a vast library of high quality, current, and engaging video tutorials taught by great teachers who are also working professionals. Your contributions have supported many library programs including the summer reading program, the annual Battle of the Books, and computer classes. In addition, we provided funding for the appearance of authors, musicians, adult, teen and family game nights, and additional PS4 gaming systems. Friend’s contributions to the library last year came to more than $36,000! Thank you to those who contributed to and bid during the Friends’ two Basket Silent Auctions, the recent Jimmy Howard autographed Goalie Hockey stick silent auction and the junior trail bike, golf club set and Life Sport Air-bike raffles. Thanks also to the hard working volunteer book sales’ staff. They make the book store and used book sales possible as they pickup, sort and stock all of your generous book contributions throughout the year. A Message from The Friends of the Library To the person reading this newsletter: Are you passionate about books? Do you care about our library? Are you one of the few who takes pride in making a difference? Then, contact us. We need you! The Friends of the Orion Library could cease to exist as an organization unless more people join the board and participate in the committees that keep the Friends active. Many important library programs, including Summer Reading and Battle of the Books, are sponsored by the Friends of the Library and they could be cancelled without the Friends’ support. Let’s join efforts to make literacy available to all and to share our passion for reading with others. We invite you to fill out a membership form available at the library’s front desk, to leave a message at (248) 693 3000 x 350 , or to e-mail us at [email protected]. Together we can make a difference. A Sign of Friendship The logo of the Friends of the Orion Township Public Library is used throughout the newsletter to denote programs that are fully or partially supported with funding from the Friends. 11 NON-PROFIT U.S. POSTAGE PAID Lake Orion, MI Permit No. 17 ECRWSS Donations & Memorials In Memory of Brian Carl Jensen (Donor: Einar Carl Jensen) Gavin Otten (Donor: Jim and Joyce Becker) Jane Devlin (Donor: Krazy, Kool, Knitters and Krocheters) Bonnie Britton (Donors: Patrick Britton, Colleen Britton) Daughters of the American Revolution, Carol Bosche) Audrey Barnett (Donor: Stacey Barnett) General Donations Wish List Donations Joy Ellen Stimac Joyce Ogilvie Steve Jackson Games (games) Alexis Iveson Looney Labs (games) Days of Wonder (games) Ravensburger USA, Inc.
