joyful anticipation and spiritual preparation, why else is
the First Sunday of Advent important? The Fir st of the
Four Sundays of Advent is important because it begins the
new Liturgical Year for the Church.

All are welcome to the Knights’ Children’s
Christmas Party Sunday, December 7th, from 1-3
pm at the KC Hall. Ages for the children: age 12
and under. Admission: please bring canned food
or $1.00 for the St. Dominic’s Food Pantry.
POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS
We are again asking our parishioners to
bring a potted Poinsettia plant to put in the
church during Christmas in honor of a
loved one. If you do, please bring them to
the old church between Dec. 15th and Dec.
19th. We could use both red and white
Poinsettias.
It is that time again — the Christmas Giving Tree has tags for
the Walt Fortman Agency (kids ages 12-18); the Wounded
Warrior Program (we have 15 families this year); the Life
Support Center in conjunction with the Diocese; and our own
Food Pantry. If you can help, please take one of the tags from
the tree, buy the gift and attach the gift tag to the package.
Then please place the gift under the Giving Tree by
December 10 for the Walt Fortman gifts and all other gifts
by Wednesday, December 17. All gifts will be distr ibuted
to the proper agency by December 19th. Thank you for your

Laity Engaging Laity (LEL)
Need a break from the busy pace of life? Need a better focus
in your prayer life? LEL can help. It is a Diocesan lay
organization focused on personal transformation and spiritual
growth through monthly mini-retreats.
LEL will host an Advent Retreat on Saturday, Dec. 13 from
9:00 am to 2:30 pm at the Holy Apostles Evangelization
Center (Mary’s House) @ 4925 N. Carefree Circle, CS). The
retreat will be led by Fr. Ron Raab, Holy Cross priest and
pastor of Sacred Heart Tri-Community, and will include Mass.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATION
Come and join us Friday, December 12th, to
participate in a Mass and feast in honor of our
Blessed Lady of Guadalupe. We will begin with the
adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:00 pm and a
Rosary at 6:30 pm followed by a bilingual Mass at
7:00 pm. There will be a blessing of images at the
end of the Mass. If interested in participating in the
choir, playing an instrument, volunteering for that

chocolate and Mexican sweet bread in the Narthex after Mass.
Ponderings of a Parochial Vicar
My Dear Parishioners,
This week we begin the beautiful season of Advent. This is the first season of the Church year
and we joyfully anticipate the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, the beauty of
this season is often lost in the preparations for
Christmas. Tree decorating, parties and shopping seem to be the overriding focus rather than
the interior conversion and preparation for Immanuel “God is with us”. We are to expect the
Messiah. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
says:
When the Church celebrates the
liturgy of Advent each year, she
makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing
in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew
their ardent desire for his second
coming. By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the
Church unites herself to his desire:
‘He must increase, but I must decrease.’
To prepare ourselves properly for the arrival of
the Messiah we must focus, in a most particular
way, on the interior conversion of our hearts.
This is why Advent, like Lent, is a penitential
season. From the 4th century, the season was
kept as a period of fasting and abstinence as
strict as in Lent. This has been lessened, but
while fasting is no longer mandated, it is still a
good and praiseworthy act, which I would encourage you to practice. Additionally, the vestments are purple and the Mass has less singing.
This is also why the Gloria is no longer sung.
What joy we will have when we hear it again at
Christmas.
During Advent, it is easy to get caught up in the
celebration of Christmas, but this Advent, let us
not miss the wonderful opportunity to grow closer to God. Let us reflect on our lives, make frequent use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation
(Confession) and allow the Season of Advent to
penetrate our hearts. May we truly use the next
four weeks to prepare for the arrival of our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ.
