Chris Webber was escorting his two young children (Casey & Jake) from the 9:00 Mass last Sunday over to the Activity Center for donuts and fellowship. He does that most Sunday's and its kind of cute. They walk slowly. Jake is four years old and Casey is three. What amuses me is the patience that Chris exercises with them. They walk slowly and he walks slowly to "keep up" with them. And if Jake hurries, Chris calls him back to his little sister, lest he get too far ahead. It made me think of what happens to us in our senior years. We slow down a bit! Whenever I am out walking anywhere with Fr. Mark, he walks always about 20 paces faster than I do. So he constantly has to stop and wait for me to catch up to him. He walks faster and I walk slower in my "old age." He is as patient with me as Chris Webber is with his two children. I know that children are too young to appreciate mom and dad's patience. They are too young to express thank you for waiting for them as they take baby steps to catch up with mom and dad's strides. And in the blink of an eye, they will grow so old that their folks won't be around for them to thank. Nevertheless, they aren't the only people who are patient with us as we grow slower. My friends, Sam & Joyce are slowing down too. They both suffer from a loss of hearing. It's always an interesting experience to go out to dinner with them. Neither of them hears very well. They will both ask questions and neither knows that other spoke. So it's really important for them to be patient with one another. They are! And like Fr. Mark, they are so patient with me and the slow pace at which I walk. Joyce had to have knee replacement a year ago, so she is particularly aware of not walking fast. It meant that Sam really had to slow down for Joyce. He took it in stride, he did! Sam loves Joyce! They practice patience with each other. Maybe it's what makes their marriage such a wonderful Sacrament. They practice patience. Do you suppose its because they have been parents too and raised two children? Which brings me back to Chris Webber and his patience with his two children. Something there is that makes that picture of a father slowly and patiently walking with his children from car to church and church to fellowship and fellowship back to the car, a learning experience for those two children. What a picture of love! Quite a lesson for this pastor who needs to be even more patient with all who wander into his pasture. ECCL Last February 12th will live forever in the minds of some future priests in our archdiocese. It was the night that the main chapel at Sacred Heart Major Seminary caught fire. It was an electrical fire that started in the ceiling and as providence had it, it just happened that two seminarians were in the chapel praying at 11:45 p.m. and heard the crackling noise and saw the flames above the ceiling coming from the chapel attic. They notified the fire department and awakened the whole seminary faculty and student body. These seminarians will remember this night and this event long into their years as priests. It will be sort of like, "Do you remember what you were doing the night the chapel caught fire?" It got me to thinking about the events that happened in that same seminary during my tenure that have stuck in my memory banks to this day. (Continued, top of page 2…) The Harp of the Holy Spirit - St. Ephrem Community Page 2, October 18, 2009 Fr. Ron’s Column and News (...Fr. Ron, continued from page 1) Of course, like most of you, I remember November 22nd, 1963 and what we were doing when word came down that President Kennedy had been assassinated. Classes were suspended and we spent hours in that very same chapel praying for our country and for our new president as well as praying for Jacqueline Kennedy and her children. That's an easy one to remember for all of us. Another remembering event: we were permitted to have special evenings once or twice a semester when studies were cancelled, evening prayer was postponed to a later hour, and we would gather in the refectory (dining hall) for an evening of skits and music. Alcohol was forbidden, as you might expect, but we were permitted to have soda and chips and pizza. The skits were a bit edgy in that guys who were really good at mimicking others would mimic various faculty members. The mimicking was meant to ridicule and that it did! We would laugh hilariously but always with an eye to make sure that the dean of men, Msgr. Sherzer and the Rector, Msgr. Canfield were also laughing. Fr. Paul Berg was always a likely candidate to be mimicked because of his easily identifiable quirks. But he would laugh as much as the rest of us. We had four guys who could pass for the Beatles and who did a great job at entertaining us. Each of them looked somewhat like each of the four Beatles. One of them eventually was assigned here to St. Ephrem's. He was Fr. Bernie Karaskiewicz who was here in 1979. He wore a hairpiece but I can't honestly remember which Beatle he mimicked. We laughed and cheered like they were the real Beatles. I can still visualize them singing "I Want Hold Your Hand" for the community. For us in the 1960's it will be numbered among those defining moments at the seminary. From my era I remember the night that the seminary caught fire on the third floor, above what is now the faculty dining room. Then it was nothing but storage space. Like this February fire, it too was an electrical fire. My seminary "job" was one of the two "fire marshals." It would be our duty, if ever there was a fire, to notify Fr. Prohaska (an elderly professor of Latin who was confined to a wheelchair) and Fr. Leo J. Ward (an elderly professor confined to his own world of senility). The other fire marshal was Jerry McEnhill, now Fr. Jerry McEnhill, pastor of Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake. The date is lost but the event is remembered. The alarm sounded at about 10:30 p.m. All of us came running from the resident halls, down the stairs and out onto Chicago Blvd. We were never even allowed to use those doors but this night's fire changed all that. So there we stood out in the night air on West Chicago Blvd. We could hear the sound of the fire engines approaching from wherever. Some place in that huge building was a fire. Suddenly, standing there looking up at the gothic architecture, it occurred to me that I had completely forgotten my "sworn" responsibility. "Oh my God, I forgot Prohaska and Ward!" I shouted. Lickety-split I raced back into the building, up four flights of stairs and down to the middle of the faculty residence hall on the second floor. I banged on Fr. Louis Prohaska's door with all my might. Slowly but slowly, Fr. Prohaska yelled back, "What is it?" I screamed "Fire, Father, it's a fire!" (Cont’ bottom of next column…) Today is Mission Sunday We observe the annual day of prayer and sacrifice for the missions today. We unite ourselves with our fellow Christians all over the world who with us attempt to share our faith with others, especially those who have not yet heard the name of Jesus. He had gotten into his wheelchair and was at his dresser wearing pajamas and a night cap. He asked me if it was a real fire or just a "fire drill!" I could hear the fire fighters down the hall and more sirens outside. I pulled (actually I yanked) him from the dresser and pushed him out the door and down the hall to the elevator. Just then a fireman running with a fire hose ran past us and said, "Not to worry, they had extinguished the fire!" Later I apologized to Fr. Prohaska for not being more understanding. He accepted my apology. You may be wondering about poor old Fr. Leo J. Ward. When I arrived at the elevator, Jerry McEnhill was still waiting for Fr. Ward to open his door. Actually we would all laugh about these incidents for years to come. That's our fire story from my era in the seminary. Here we are 44 years later and I still recall the night and how I completely forgot my duty as "fire marshal!" _____________________________________ I am so blest to work with such a fine staff of people. How many times have you read The Harp and seen the little box of information about RCIA with the invitation to call the church office for more information about the process? Have you wondered what RCIA is, and what the process is? Good questions! How can you encourage friends and family members (and maybe yourself?) to check into the RCIA if you don't know what it is? The initials stand for The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Christian Initiation includes the Sacraments of Initiation - which are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Celebration of these three Sacraments makes a person a fully initiated Catholic. The RCIA is a way of catechizing (teaching) and liturgically celebrating with the Catechumens and Candidates of our Church, marking their progress through the program from their first questions about the Church through the celebration of their receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. The distinction between Catechumen and Candidate is the formal distinction made at the beginning of the faith journey process the Church calls the RCIA. The RCIA process is designed so that the person inquiring about the Church is guided supported, and taught what the Church believes and teaches, what it means to be a Catholic Christian, and how to live as a Catholic Christian. A Catechumen is a person who has not been baptized in the Christian faith (in any denomination), or whose baptism is not recognized as a valid baptism, which means it was not performed with the required elements of water and the Trinitarian formula: being baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. A Catechumen is one who will celebrate all three of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. A Candidate is someone who has already been validly baptized into the Christian faith, including Catholics who have been baptized but have received little or no religious education and who have not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Therefore, a Candidate, by reason of his/her valid baptism in the Christian faith, is already a member of Christ's body with us. This person is called a Candidate because he/she is a candidate for full incorporation into the Catholic Church through the celebration of the remaining two Sacraments of Initiation: Confirmation and Eucharist. The process begins with a telephone call to the parish office at 586-264-1230. It's always the right time to call and ask about the RCIA. We will invite you to set up a time to come and talk with us about the RCIA process. (Continued, bottom of page 6…) The Harp of the Holy Spirit - St. Ephrem Community Page 6, October 18, 2009 Christian Formation On the Road to Emmaus: Last week’s Mass of Thanksgiving for Deacon Dennis was a wonderful celebration. I must admit it brought back a lot of memories for me when I walked down the aisle of St. Ephrem for the first time as Deacon. Deacon Dennis did a wonderful job and was as nervous as most would be. I pray for him daily that his From Deacon Ed new assignment and calling will be filled with much joy and happiness as my ministry has been to me. On another note, while Deacon Dennis was doing his internship here, I was also mentoring another man who will be ordained in two years. Where he will do his internship is to be seen. Also, while I was at Deacon Dennis’ house after ordination, Deacon Ken who is the head of the formation program was talking with us. Deacon Ken asked if I would be willing to take on another intern. I said yes, but when. If all is agreeable and details can be worked out we may have another deacon intern this coming Advent. Another man was accepted along with two other men into the program and I will be mentoring one of them whom I am meeting this Friday evening. Needless to say it will be busy over the next four or five years in addition to all that is going on at the parish, but what an exciting time for our parish and the church of Detroit that men are answering the call to ministry as a deacon. I spoke to our families this past week at our family program about “Meeting Jesus” and I remarked that I have never “seen” Jesus as much as I have since ordination. Holding the “face of Jesus” as they are baptized; holding the “face of Jesus” as two people confer the sacrament of marriage upon each other; holding the “face of Jesus” in the sick we encounter; and holding the “face of Jesus” in those who are in sorrow at the loss of a loved one. Ordination is a great gift and holds many blessings for the one who is ordained and called to ministry. Deacon Frank Bramos, who is now at home with the Lord, is the person and deacon who taught me so much about holding another person in our hands as we would hold Christ in our hands. For it is in helping another person that we help Christ. Deacon Frank would always tell me that the Disciples of Christ; St. Francis; and other saints did not have all the theology courses we have today, but they lived the Gospel and reached out to help another in need and that is what Christ did when he walked the earth. So many people may walk into my life. I, at the time, may be busy or totally exhausted, but somehow I welcome them as Christ would and just listen to them, or help if I can. And when they walk away I feel so much better. I know many have told me that I may be taken advantage of at times, even my own classmates have said the same, but one never knows the whole story of those who come to us. I trust in God that I will not be taken advantage of and for most of the encounters that I have had with people, they just really needed someone to listen to them. As we move from summer into the fall season of the year may we be more welcoming of those who come into our lives and may we “behold the face of Christ” in the other person we meet. Gentle and Peaceful Fall Days! Deacon Ed United In Christ On Friday, October 2, 2009, family and friends gathered in church to witness as Rachel Sorgeloos and David DesRosiers exchanged the vows of marriage. Fr. Ronald Milligan presided, and Charisse and Mark Steinberger were the host couple. May God bless David and Rachel as they begin their married life together. Fr. Ron Milligan with Mr. & Mrs. David DesRosiers (...RCIA, continued from page 5) The process is personalized depending upon each person's circumstances -whether or not the person is baptized, is or is not a member of any Christian or other church, and what the person does or does not know about being Christian. The main "learning times" occur twice during the week: first, when the candidates and catechumens are dismissed during Mass for Scripture Reflection, and second, when we meet during the week to further explore the teachings of the Church and delve deeper into the Scriptures. The candidates and catechumens are supported by the members of the RCIA Team, their individual sponsors, and YOU, our parish community. How do you support them? Through your attendance at Mass; your prayers; your Christian way of life; and for some of you, through being a sponsor. As Fr. Ron has said, one of the marks of a growing church is an active RCIA where people are being baptized and initiated into full communion with the Church. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church, what it means to be Catholic, what the RCIA is and how it works, please call the parish office (586-2641230) and ask for information about RCIA.
