Run-on Sentence Worksheet
How do you recognize a run-on sentence?
A run-on sentence occurs when there are two independent clauses, or complete sentences,
run together without proper punctuation:

The sentence above is actually two sentences put together incorrectly.
The alien’s coat was red.
and
It was ugly.
Another type of run-on sentence is when two independent clauses, or complete sentences,
are split into parts with a comma. This is called a comma splice.
The alien would look better in a purple coat, it would match his skin tone.
The sentence above is two sentences incorrectly connected by a comma.
The alien would look better in a purple coat. and It would match his skin tone.
How do you fix run-on sentence?
There are many ways to fix run-on sentences, but here are the three simplest ways.
1. Divide the run-on into sentences.
The alien’s coat was red. It was ugly.
The alien would look better in a purple coat. It would match his skin tone.
2. Separate the sentences with a semi-colon.
The alien’s coat was red; it was ugly.
The alien would look better in a purple coat; it would match his skin tone.
3. Add a comma and a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) between
the sentences.
The alien’s coat was red, and it was ugly.
The alien would look better in a purple coat, so it would match his skin tone.
