I hope all of you had a great Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or however you choose to celebrate the December holiday season. No matter how commercial the season gets, I still find it a time of friendliness and happiness. I hope you found it to be the same. Dennis Uthe, President Unit 505 Board of Directors We had a fine Sectional turn out in December. I hope all the attendees enjoyed it as much as I. I especially want to thank Sally Wheeler-Valine and her staff for an exceptionally good Holiday meal on Sunday. Sally puts in so much time and effort into the meals held at the Sectionals. When you see her, I encourage you to tell her thanks for her hard work. As I step down from being President of Unit 505, I wish to say that it’s been an honor serving as your president. It has not been a chore but a pleasure doing so. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all the board members that helped me so much: Bill Martin, Judy Baskin, Mike Cozart, Ginny Curtis, Joyce Sweeney, Amnon Igra, Luke Shennoy, Sheila Ross, Brian Masunaga, and Margareta Logus; our Unit 21 Representatives to District 21: Sally Wheeler-Valine and Katherine Ewing; our Forum article writer: Kathy Van Sickle; and especially our Kibitzer editor, who pitches in and helps us with so many things, Beth Mora. I will continue to be haunting the bridge tables. Ciao!! 2 Continuing Board Members: Brian Masunaga, Mike Cozart, Sheila Ross, Luke Shenoy, and Joyce Sweeney New Board Members: Margaret Riegert, Zelna Morrow, Pat Ingoglia, Debbie Leggett, Lucy Brown and Miriam Steinberg New Board Members Pat Ingoglia Pat graduated from UCLA in the mid ‘60’s, moved to Sacramento to work in the executive branch of government ultimately in the area of education legislation. She served a term on the California State Board of Education. Along with her husband Don, she raised 5 sons. Pat served on state and community boards related to children’s issues. She worked in the family business, Tony’s Fine Foods. Currently she is working with the board at the Sacramento Zoo transforming the Reptile House into a Biodiversity Center for the community. Now retired she enjoys golf, reading, photography, travel, bridge and most of all spending time with her family. 3 New Board Members Zelna Morrow I was born and raised in Colusa, California. After graduating from high school, I went to Mt. Zion Nursing School in San Francisco. I worked for the Marysville Medical Clinic until I married and had my first child. I have two children, Kris and Tom. I worked for the City of Williams part time which led to a career in government. I was the City Clerk/Finance Officer for 17 years and then went to work for the Nevada County Department of Transportation. I served in various capacities, which included managing the airport, grant writing, overseeing construction projects, supervising the financial and clerical staff and ending my career as the Solid Waste Manager. I took my first bridge lesson when I moved to Nevada County but didn’t start playing bridge until I retired. This was because most of the games were during the day. I took the directors course and then became part owner in a club in Grass Valley. Miriam Steinberg Although I have only been playing duplicate bridge for 2 years, I have plunged in wholeheartedly. You can see me after every game picking the brains of all the Life Masters at the club, inundating them with questions. We have some superb players in this area with great minds who are so inspirational! I started playing bridge on the playground in the 6th grade, where a friend taught us a version which was basically "fly-by-the-seat of your pants" bridge. We played through high school and could sometimes be found in the cafeteria during loud school dances playing informal matchesvery informal-we never even learned to keep score! I started "real" bridge in my retirement and have had some wonderful teachers! My current mentors are John Hughes, and John McMurdie, who teaches Tuesday mornings before the game at Sacramento Bridge Center. In my previous incarnation, I was a public school music teacher, where I taught orchestra and choir. I also played viola in the Sacramento Symphony and sang in the chorus of the Sacramento Opera (although my real passion is musical theater). Currently, I am an avid tap dancer and love to perform---I practice my steps on sit-outs to keep my blood circulating! My husband (who tried learning bridge with me and gave up!) is a retired music professor and gourmet cook. Both my daughters, who live in Berkeley, are talented amateur musicians. One of my goals on the Board is to promote the game by finding ways to reach out to new players and to offer more classes in the community. 4 Good turnout for the Winter Sectional on December 5-7 at Orangevale Comm. Ctr. L-R Stan Shamitz, Stan Spink and Judy Shamitz enjoy the Holiday Luncheon during the break in Sunday’s game. Chris Barkley (L) from Modesto and daughter, Libby Longstreth (R) came to play with Charlie Holmes who, at age 13 now, has been playing duplicate bridge since 2nd grade. They met at a Knock Out Tournament and have won twice. 14 Welcome to Unit 505—hope you come back soon! Dwight Curry and Marilyn Ruff are happy to finally get a good hand! Great turnout for Swiss Team Game! 5 Board members serve at the Holiday Luncheon Thank you Diane for helping in the kitchen all weekend! Thank you Sally Wheeler-Valine Hospitality chair and Pat Ingoglia for helping out! Shiela Ross 73.65 11 www.playbridgesacramento.org FOUR-CARD LIMIT RAISE RULES AND EXAMPLES by Clark Muldavin Most experts agree that the following criteria help define what constitutes a four-card limit raise of an opening bid of one of a major suit: Note that a nearly perfect limit raise hand like xx-Kxxx-Axx-Kxxx meets all of the six conditions below. Ten or eleven working points. (Discount non-working Q’s and J’s). A well placed additional king will make a limit raise hand an opening hand. Eight losing trick count (8 LTC), about a king short of an opening hand. Best to have 3 or 4 controls (A=2, K=1). Rarely 5 controls unless 4-3-3-3. Best to have 1+ defensive tricks outside of the trump suit. The four-card trump support should include an A, K, Q or J10. Below are four of the most common bidding sequences to show a four-card major limit raise by responder: 1H-(P)-3H 1H-(P)-3D* (Bergen Raise) 1H-(Dbl)-2NT* (Jordan/Truscott) P-(P)-1H-(P)-2D* (2-way, 4 trump Drury) Many four trump limit raise hands when opposite a weak 5-card major opening hand like Kx-AQJxx-Qxx-Jxx will not make game. This hand opposite the above nearly perfect 8 LTC four-card limit raise hand in hearts (xx-Kxxx-Axx-Kxxx) will not make game. This hand has two losers in each suit shown by the bold (xx) which are not covered by an ace, king, queen or shortness. This limit raise hand opposite the above Kx-AQJxx-Qxx-Jxx hand could lose on a bad day two spades, no hearts, two diamonds, and two or three clubs. Even with a Trifecta, the ace of spades, ace of clubs and king of diamonds all on sides you still may have four losers. Even opposite xx-AQJ10xx-Jx-Axx, you have four losers. 12 FOUR-CARD LIMIT RAISE RULES AND EXAMPLES by Clark Muldavin page 2 Below are four good, four-card limit raise hands opposite a 1H opening bid with an adjusted Losing Trick Count (LTC) shown using fractions as suggested by Klinger, Bellaona/Garrozzo, Rubens, DeSerpa and others. (a)- xx-Kxxx-Axx-Kxxx (7-3/4 LTC) This is the nearly perfect limit raise hand shown above. (b)-KQxx-Qxxx-xx-Axx (7-3/4 LTC), 11 working points. KQxx suits are tough to evaluate. (c)-A10x-K10xx-7xx-Axx (7-3/4 LTC), 3=4=3=3 shape is bad, but 5 controls and 2-10’s are a plus. (d)-xx-KQxx-KQJx-xxx (7-3/4 LTC), minus for only 2 controls, but good diamonds. The following hands are too weak for a four trump limit raise in hearts: (e)-xxx-KQxx-KQ9-Jxx (8-1/2 LTC) 3=4=3=3 shape and only 2 controls. (f) Kxxx-KJxx-Qxx-Qx (8-1/2 LTC) 2 controls, 3/4 defensive trick outside of trump. (g) Kxxx-Jxxx-Ax-Qxx (8-1/2 LTC) bad trump, only 3 controls, Ace in short suit, bad Q. (h) Qxx-Qxxx-Kxxx-KJx (8-3/4 LTC) 2 controls, no defense, too many quacks. 13 Sacramento Bridge Center 916-925-6322 MONDAY Game time—11:00 AM John Directs and Joy Cooks Well, we survived STaC week, the Christmas luncheon, and an upgraded Club Championship and are now looking at a brand new year! Over 175 of our stalwart club members joined in the merriment of our Holiday Dinner and Dance on Dec.17th. With Dennis Krause at the piano playing Christmas Carols during “Happy Hour,” the mood was set for a festive evening. At the dinner table, the salmon and beef dinners were handsomely accompanied by bottles of red and white wine on every table. Then, after dinner and a few brief announcements, the DJ managed to coax the spry ones out from their tables and onto the dance floor. All in all, a fun evening, and without the discussion of even one bridge hand! Wednesday, January 21—Annual Club Meeting: As we move into the New Year, remember to mark your calendar for and join us at the Kilaga Lodge Presentation Hall at 10:00 AM. It is important that as many of our members as possible are present so that we have a quorum to approve the 2015 club budget and to introduce the following club officers for 2015: Sharon Neff, - President Jim Collart, - Vice President Jim McElfresh - Treasurer Tom Rosen - Secretary In addition, a good turnout will demonstrate that our club is serving many SCLH residents and is deserving of the meeting rooms we have been assigned. Also, remember to pay your $5.00 per person annual membership fee at your earliest convenience. Although all of us are anxious to get back to our normal Wednesday games, there will NOT be a duplicate game held on Wed., Jan. 7th due to maintenance activities in the multipurpose room. Also, our Sat., Jan. 10th session will only have the ‘open’ game with about 14-15 tables available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Apparently, some of Terra Cotta Room space will be used by the Vaudeville Troupe for a costume changing area during their afternoon performance that day. Duplicate players seeking pigmented points will be able to compete in two Northern CA Regional Tournaments early in 2015. The Monterey “Clambake” Regional will be held from Jan. 5-11, 2015 at the Monterey Hyatt Regency Hotel. Then, the “Presidents’ Day” Regional will be held in the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport from Feb. 10-16, 2015.
