From the Desk of Parishoner Bill Godfrey
Speak, Lord. Your Servant is Listening
In today's first reading, Samuel, called by the Lord, did not
know who had called him until, on the third call, Eli told him how
to respond to God: "Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening."
In our contemporary world filled with noise we often fail to
enter into the silence. We grow uncomfortable when thoughts
that we do not welcome intrude in that silence. As a result we lose
contact with our real selves and do not know who we really are.
We live and think on the surface, almost afraid to go deeper, since
we may discover that we must change, or that we are not really who we hope we are.
It can be useful to go to a quiet place - a peaceful room, a favorite spot outdoors, perhaps a
church when no one else is there - and if you can, empty your mind (it might take time) and listen.
"Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." It can sometimes be boring, and you may want to get it
over with, but be patient. In the silence enlightenment may come. If nothing happens the first time,
don't give up. Try again. At the very least you will find some peace and temporary release from the
concerns swirling in your subconscious.
Cell phones, texting, television, and radio often fill the
spaces of our day, adding little of substance to our personal and
spiritual growth. They frequently distract and deter us from the
self-analysis that can make us better human beings.
Perhaps the year 2015 and periods of creative
silence can help some of us find ourselves and
develop a closer relationship with God.
Bill Godfrey
Lent is often thought of as a time of sacrifice. It is a
time to "give up" things such as candy, bad habits, and today,
maybe even the internet. These challenges help us prepare for
larger sacrifices in life. But Lent does not have to be a time of
"giving up." Rather, we can make it a time to "give" and add
something positive to our daily lives.
When it comes to almsgiving or helping the poor, the
Church makes it easy for us. We at Infant Jesus are asked to
contribute alms-gifts through our Giving, Not Giving Up Program.
During the five Sundays of Lent, everyone is encouraged to bring their alms-gifts forward at
the Presentation of the Gifts during our Sunday Masses. This act of generosity is a tangible sign of
our Lenten efforts to feed the hungry and clothe the naked.
Alms-Gifts will be collected during the five weekends of Lent, from the weekend of February
22nd to the weekend of March 22nd. Each weekend we ask our community to donate different types
of items to assist our neighbors who are in need.
Further details will be posted in this bulletin as the Lenten season approaches.

“The principal wears a ton of hats, just like the teachers
do. We all wear the hat of being a steward of the way
that the school is perceived as well as to be a champion
of the work that the school does”- John Piropato. A Conversation:
Meet John Piropato, Principal,
Our Lady of Wisdom Regional School
Our Lady of Wisdom Regional School, a safe,
secure, nurturing place of learning, is in good hands,
with strong leadership and an outstanding faculty. The
beneficiaries are not only the students, but the parents,
siblings and extended communities in which today’s
students live and the school’s graduates later enter.
A friendly, familiar face known to all in the
school’s hallways and classrooms at Our Lady of
Wisdom Regional School (OLOW), in Port Jefferson,
was welcomed into a new role this past September. He is
John Piropato, a veteran 14-year educator at OLOW,
now the new Principal of a school that has been
providing quality education, rooted in Catholic
spirituality and values, to students in the community
since 1938.
Some background: Mr. Piropato might be
considered as a “home grown” OLOW leader: 14 years as
an educator and administrator in science, math and
athletics at the school, and significantly credentialed in
Educational Leadership (Stony Brook); a Master of
Science in (Hofstra), and a double major bachelors in
business administration and social sciences (St.
Joseph’s). Mr. Piropato’s commitment to excellence in education will serve the children of OLOW well. He is married
and have a beautiful young family
The following Q & A may illuminate some of what the new OLOW leadership is
thinking, the direction of the school; an overall sense of community that the new
principal is endeavoring to nurture, and why the school is in such good hands:
Why did you want to become principal?
JP: With education and administrative degrees, I felt that my skill set would be best
used as an administrator. I have enjoyed being a teacher but I realized there was
another way to extend my path down this journey. That led me into this office.
Where do OLOW graduates go?
JP: 90% of our graduates go to Catholic school, mostly St. Anthony’s in Huntington,
St. John the Baptist in West Islip and Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School in
Riverhead. The proportions change yearly, but these schools get the lion’s share of
where our graduates go. A few go to Chaminade or other Catholic schools. About 10%
of our class enrolls in public high school.
What should parents (and the outside world) know about you and your
approach to education?
JP: That we have and are building a high-quality instruction program rooted in
Catholic teaching. We follow the guidelines of the most recent educational standards.
Aside from things academic we have a good number of extracurricular programs that
sometimes get overlooked. These include: play productions and drama clubs, intra- scholastic sports, community
outreaches on behalf of the local food pantries and the churches, and those types of non-athletic and non-academic
things but also are character building at the same time. Naturally we attend mass monthly as a school and we also have
three-class groups attend in alternating weeks. Life at OLOW is a lot more than academics.
Does the spiritual/intellectual balance that OLOW schoolchildren get exposed to give OLOW graduates
and Catholic school graduates an edge?

On the weekend of February 1st, Infant
Jesus parish will be hosting a Baby Bottle
Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long
Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy
center that counsels women and men who are
experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you
know that they provide:
 free pregnancy tests
 maternity housing with eligibility
requirements
 medical care
 referrals
 cribs
 car seats
 diapers
 and ALL other baby items that are needed.
On the weekend of February 1st , speakers
from The Life Center will speak at all masses,
and bottles will be handed out after the mass.
We are asking that you pick up a baby
bottle and fill it with your change. Most
importantly, we are asking you to recite the
prayer on the bottle.
The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the
counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a
mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a
mother’s heart to accept the truth. We
believe these prayers lead abortionminded women to call The Life Center
in the first place.
Let us pray with our
whole heart for the
lives of our unborn
children.
