From the Desk of Deacon Michael Byrne
How Often do We Misunderstand the Signs?
Today’s reading, taken from the Gospel of John, recounts the story of Jesus driving the money-changers out of
the temple. Those who witnessed this event asked Jesus to show them a sign for what he had done. Jesus responded,
“Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews who were present misunderstood what Jesus was
saying. They believed he was speaking of the physical temple which had been under construction for forty-six years.
Jesus, however, was speaking not about the physical temple, but rather about temple of his body. He was speaking about
his passion, death, and resurrection, which were looming in the distance. Even his own disciples were perplexed by Jesus’
response. It is not until later, after he was raised from the dead, that the disciples understood and came to believe in the
words Jesus had spoken.
And what about us? How often do we misunderstand the signs God gives us? If we are honest with ourselves, the
answer is quite often. Why? The reason is because, most times, our own desire for what we want, and the path we want to
take, often obscures God’s will for our life and the path he is trying to show us.
And so we spin our wheels. We waste the precious time that is given us. We make little to no progress in our
growth in holiness. We think we are going somewhere. We think we are accomplishing things, but in reality we aren’t
going anywhere. We aren’t accomplishing a thing. I am reminded of the first two verses of Psalm 127: “If the Lord does
not build the house, in vain do its builders labor; if the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep
vigil. In vain is your earlier rising, your going later to rest, you who toil for the bread you eat: when he pours gifts on his
beloved while they slumber.”
If we want to grow in holiness, if we want to come to a clearer understanding of
the purpose of our life, we need to become more aware of the signs that God gives us. We
need to develop a much keener sense of the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It’s
not difficult to do, since God desires to speak to us. We just need to make more of an
effort to listen. So I invite you to deepen your prayer life, to make more of an effort to
discern the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life, and then…listen, see, and
understand the signs God has been giving you all along.
May the peace which only Christ can provide be with each of you,
Deacon Mike
