From the Desk of Deacon Mike
You Have a Call…and it’s Urgent!!!
Today’s first readings, taken from the Book of Jonah, and the Gospel
reading, taken from the Gospel of Mark, revolve around the reality of being called by
God. The first reading recounts Jonah’s call by God to go to the city of Nineveh and
announce to the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days because of
their wickedness. The Gospel reading recalls Jesus’ calling of the first disciples.
Together, these two readings offer us many insights into what a call from God can
mean to those who are called.
In the case of Jonah, we learn that God’s call can be an unexpected, even
unwelcomed, call. The Book of Jonah begins with these words: “The word of the
Lord came to Jonah…” This phraseology identifies Jonah as a prophet sent by God.
God, however, does not send Jonah to prophesize to the Israelites. Instead, God
sends him to prophesize to the Israelites’ sworn enemy, the Ninevites. Is it any
wonder that Jonah tried to flee from God’s call? The second lesson we learn from
the story of Jonah is that God is persistent. He does not give up. Jonah, of course,
does finally answer God’s call.
In today’s Gospel reading, the disciples react in a way that is in complete
contrast to how Jonah reacted to his call from God. Simon and his brother Andrew,
at the prompting of Jesus’ call, immediately abandon their nets and follow him.
James and his brother John not only abandon their nets, but they abandon their
father as well. That seems a bit harsh, but there is a message in there for all of us about answering God’s call. It’s not that
we are called to abandon our family. Rather, the message is that when we know God is calling us, we need to drop
everything that is in opposition to that call: fear, lack of confidence in our ability, feelings of unworthiness to the call, and
lack of faith in God. We need to abandon our old way of life, so to speak.
There is an urgency and an immediacy to both Jonah’s call and the call of the first disciples. The urgency and
immediacy of the call causes Jonah to flee. For the first disciples, it causes them to abandon everything and follow Jesus.
The question is, of course, what does God’s call do to us? How do we respond? Do we run from it, or do we run
towards it? The answers to those questions have profound consequences for our eternal life. We have a God that will
never stop calling us. That does not mean, however, that we have an unlimited time to respond. We don’t. Our time on
earth is finite, and before you know it, it’s over.
Is there something God has been calling you to do? Do you feel him tugging at your heart to serve him in a
particular way? Perhaps, it’s time to stop running. Perhaps, it’s time to drop your “nets” and follow Jesus in a more
profound way. The decision to follow Jesus in a new way is never easy and does require an honest period of discernment,
but if you’ve done that, and you still feel that tug on your heart, then it’s time to act. We all know time has a way of
slipping away. Don’t let your life pass by without discovering the answer to the most important question: “Why did God
create me?” The answer to that question is found by answering God’s call…and to know what that call is, we need to have
a deep prayer life.
I would like to end by quoting some words spoken by Pope Francis during his recent trip to the Philippines.
During an address to families, Pope Francis spoke these words: “To hear and accept God’s call, to make a home for Jesus,
you must be able to rest in the Lord. You must make time each day for prayer. But you may say to me: Holy Father, I
want to pray, but there is so much work to do! I must care for my children; I have chores in the home; I am too tired even
to sleep well. This may be true, but if we do not pray, we will not know the most important thing of all: God’s will for us.
And for all our activity, our busy-ness, without prayer we will accomplish very little.”
Pope Francis may have been addressing families, but his words ring true for all vocations, whether our vocation
is to married life, life as a single person, consecrated religious life, or the priesthood. Let us pray that each of us respond
to God’s call in a much more profound and generous way, so that each of us, filled with God’s grace, may more fully live
out our own particular call from God.
May the peace which only Christ provides be with each of you,
Deacon Mike Byrne

Last Week’s Basketball Tournament
On Saturday, January 17th, the Joan of Arc Council 1992
of the Knights of Columbus held their annual Basketball
Tournament for boy and girls in Montfort Hall.
Over 30 kids participated, 10 of whom are going to the
District 4 completion on February 7th, as well as to a
Brooklyn Nets game on April 10th.
Lent is often thought of as
a time of sacrifice. It is a
time to "give up" things such as
candy, bad habits, and today,
maybe even the internet. These
challenges help us prepare for
larger sacrifices in life. But
Lent does not have to be a time
of "giving up." Rather, we can
make it a time to "give" and add something positive to
our daily lives. We at Infant Jesus are asked to contribute
alms-gifts through our Giving, Not Giving Up Program.
During the five Sundays of Lent, everyone is encouraged to bring their alms-gifts forward at the Presentation of the Gifts during our Sunday Masses. AlmsGifts will be collected during the five weekends of
Lent, from the weekend of February 22nd to the
weekend of March 22nd. Each weekend we ask our
community to donate different types of items to assist our
neighbors who are in need. Further details will be posted
in this bulletin as the Lenten season approaches.

A Workshop on Angels.
What are angels? What do they do? How are
they different from us, and why do we
sometimes confuse them with God?
Why are angels good and demons bad,
and why can’t demons be forgiven?
How do angels see? Are we simply
angels covered in skin? What can angels
make me think, and what can’t they
make me do? What is it like to stand in a
crowd of angels, and why doesn’t that
make a lot of sense?
These are just some of the questions that can be
legitimately posed about those interesting creatures
called angels. Please join us for a five-week workshop in
which we will consider what one of the greatest minds in
human history said about the issue, Doctor of the Church,
St. Thomas Aquinas.

Come Join Us At Our Weekly Meetings
On the weekend of February 1st, Infant
Jesus parish will be hosting a Baby Bottle
Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long
Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy
center that counsels women and men who are
experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you
know that they provide:
Deacon Mike at [email protected] or
Anna Rosenberg at [email protected]
 free pregnancy tests
 maternity housing with eligibility
‘Twas The Season of The Messengers
requirements
 medical care
 referrals
 cribs
 car seats
 diapers
 and ALL other baby items that are needed.
On the weekend of February 1st , speakers
from The Life Center will speak at all masses,
and bottles will be handed out after the mass.
We are asking that you pick up a baby
bottle and fill it with your change. Most
importantly, we are asking you to recite the
prayer on the bottle.
The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the
counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a
mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a
mother’s heart to accept the truth. We
believe these prayers lead abortionminded women to call The Life Center
in the first place.
Let us pray with our
whole heart for the
lives of our unborn
children.
