(Candlemass) February 2, 2015 – 5:30 PM
Since the fourth century, the church has
celebrated “The Presentation of the
Lord” (formerly known as the
Purification of Mary) when, in
accordance with Jewish Law, Joseph
and Mary presented their firstborn male
son to the Temple Priest 4o days following His birth.
During the 11th century, the church began the custom of
blessing candles while joyously singing the Canticle of
Simeon. Blessed Sacrament Parish will honor this custom
inviting parishioners to attend this celebration and to bring their
own candles from home to be blessed.
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord will be celebrated at
Blessed Sacrament on February 2 at our 5:30 PM Mass. Join us as
we bring to a conclusion the 40 day Feast of the Nativity!
HYMN OF PRAISE
It may surprise many Catholics to learn that at only one place
during the entire celebration of the Holy Mass is a "Hymn"
specifically advocated. This hymn is to succeed the reception
of Holy Communion, the Purification of the vessels and (if
appropriate) a few moments of silent prayer. It has earned
the title "Hymn of Praise" given its described function by the
Roman Missal:
"When the distribution of Communion is over, if appropriate, the
Priest and faithful pray quietly for some time. If desired, a Psalm
or other canticle of praise or a hymn may also be sung by the
whole congregation." General Instruction of the
Roman Missal (2011)
At Blessed Sacrament Parish, we began the process of
introducing the "Hymn of Praise" on the First Sunday of
Advent solidifying its proper placement within the
Communion Rite in time for the celebration of our Christmas
Liturgies.
In an effort to allow for the proper placement of the "Hymn
of Praise" while preserving a few moments for "quiet
prayer," our Music Ministers are also being trained to begin/
conclude the Communion Chant at the proper time(s) while
allowing for the reception of Holy Communion themselves:
"While the Priest is receiving the Sacrament, the Communion
Chant is begun...the singing is prolonged for as long as the
Sacrament is being administered to the faithful. However, if
there is to be a hymn after Communion, the Communion Chant
should be ended in a timely manner. Care should be taken that
singers, too, can receive Communion with ease.” General
Instruction of the Roman Missal (2011)
We are grateful for your increased participation in the singing
at Mass of late, especially at the "Hymn of Praise"!

Noteworthy
Passing the Basket
Surely you have noticed the change from
the “basket on a stick” method of taking
up the collection at Mass, to a more
communal “hand-to-hand” passing of the
basket. The reason for this change is to
foster a sense of sharing, recognizing that we are all part of
a community that gives in whatever way we can. Many
parishioners already give through automatic tithing, where
their family’s contribution is withdrawn from their bank
account each month; others prefer using the provided
parish envelopes; and still others enjoy the convenience of
giving with cash. Those who may not be able to give are
encouraged to say a short prayer for Blessed Sacrament
when the basket is passed to their hands. However you
choose to give, remember that the collection basket stands
as a tangible reminder of the responsibilities we all share in
the stewardship and health of our parish. Thank you for
your support and for your understanding!
Fragrance Free Zone
The north transept area of the Church has been
designated a “Fragrance Free Zone” for those
who are seriously bothered by, or are allergic to perfumes,
colognes, and other fragrances. Some of our parishioners
must leave Mass because of this threat to their health.
Please observe this seating restriction and, if you wish to
wear a fragrance, choose to sit elsewhere. Thank you!
