INTA is the Spanish Ministry of Defence’s Research and Technology Institute. Formerly devoted to research
and development in the fields of aeronautics and space, as a result of the MoD’s research institutes
restructuring process, the INTA now encompasses the technological capabilities of the former ITM (Instituto
Tecnológico “la Marañosa”) and CEHIPAR (Canal de Experiencias Hidrodinámicas de El Pardo”) in the land
and maritime domains respectively.

ARRIVAL IN MADRID AND TRANSPORTATION TO THE MEETING VENUE (INTA)
Arrival by Air
“Adolfo Suarez” Barajas International Airport (www.aena.es) welcomes all international flights arriving in
Madrid. It is located in the northeast, 12 kilometres away from the capital. Barajas currently has four operative
terminals: T1, T2, T3 and T4.
There are several ways to get from the airport to Madrid:
•
Metro (subway): The easiest, quickest and most affordable way to get from the airport to
recommended hotels. Line 8 (Aeropuerto T4 – Nuevos Ministerios) connects Barajas international
airport with the capital, in 20 minutes form T4 and only 12 minutes from the other terminals (T1-T2T3).
Madrid metro network is large and comfortable. Prices are dependent on the zone you are travelling.
Single (one way) Ticket (1.5€) for the A zone (large Madrid central area excluded outskirts of the town)
One-way Tickets from/and to the airport cost 4.5€ (Single Ticket (1.5€) for the A zone + a Supplement
to enter and exit from airport stations (3€)). See www.metromadrid.es for further information.
•
Airport Express Bus (http://www.emtmadrid.es/lineaaeropuerto/index.html): This transport service
connects the city centre and Barajas airport. Running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this bus
service completes the journey in approximately 40 minutes. Buses run once every 13-20 minutes
during the day, and every 35 minutes at night. Tickets cost 5€ each, and are purchased on the bus
itself (but we aware, change will not be provided for banknotes greater than 20€). There are three
stops on the route: O'Donnell at the junction with Doctor Esquerdo, Plaza de Cibeles (nerve centre of
the EMT night buses, known as the “búhos”) and Atocha station (daytime timetable only, between 6
am and 11.30pm). The bus stops at airport terminals T1, T2 and T4, where the end of the line is
located. This special bus line is easy to identify thanks to its distinctive yellow colour scheme.
•
Taxi: To take a taxi, you need to go to the appropriate taxi rank. No attention should be paid to the
unofficial taxi drivers offering their services from within the terminals. Taxis in Madrid are white with a
diagonal red band on their front door bearing the emblem of the city. They have a green light that is on
when they are free. There is a lump price from the Barajas Airport to Madrid to any inside M30
(highway circling Madrid)
In addition to the aforementioned means of transport, some hotels in Madrid offer a shuttle service from the
airport.
Arrival by Train
Madrid has an extensive railway network that enables access to the capital from all parts of Spain, offering the
possibility to move around with ease and comfort within the national territory. Atocha and Chamartín are the
two main railway stations as they receive short-haul, long-distance, high-speed and suburban trains.
Furthermore, Chamartín also receives international arrivals from France and Portugal.

Local Transportation in Madrid
•
Metro
The subway (Metro) is the fastest, most efficient and most affordable way to move around in Madrid.
The city has a vast metropolitan network, one of the most comprehensive in Europe, and covers
almost all the points in the capital and many of the neighbouring cities. Please visit
www.metromadrid.es to access detailed information related to this transport service.
FARES
A single ticket costs 1.5-2 € (depending of the number of stations of the itinerary) and a ten journey
ticket (called metrobús), which can also be used on buses, costs 12,2 €. These tickets are valid in all
stations currently classed under pricing Zone A and Metro Ligero ML1 (i.e, inside Madrid). To enter
and exit from metro airport stations, a supplement fare of 3 € has to be paid.
There are also other kinds of tickets for the sections of the metro network that connect the capital with
the neighbouring towns: Metrosur, MetroNorte, MetroEste and TFM.
•
EMT (Madrid city bus network)
Madrid has an extensive city bus network, run by the company Empresa Municipal de Transporte
(EMT), which covers practically the whole city. Detailed information about this service can be found at
www.emtmadrid.es.
FARES
A single ticket costs 1.5 euro and a ten journey ticket (metrobús), which can also be used on the
metro network, costs 12.2 Euros. The Metrobús ticket can be purchased in Metro stations and at
authorised newspaper kiosks and tobacco shops (‘estancos’). Metrobus are not sold on the buses
themselves. The ticket should be validated for each journey made on boarding the bus, and should be
made available to any EMT staff members that request the ticket during a journey.
Please bear in mind that bus drivers will only stop when requested to do so by a passenger: those
who are travelling in the bus and wish to get off should press the stop request button inside the
vehicle; those waiting at the stop should make a clear hand signal in good time
•
Taxis
Taxis in Madrid are white with a diagonal red band on their front door bearing the emblem of the city.
They have a green light that is on when they are free. To hail a taxi all you need to do is to raise your
hand.
There are also several taxi ranks around the city, indicated by a blue sign with a white letter ‘T’. At
railway and bus stations and at the airport taxis must be taken from the corresponding ranks.
Throughout the rest of the city, they can easily be stopped in the street.
Journeys are usually paid for in cash, though more and more taxis accept credit cards. Current taxi
fares can be checked at the following link (in Spanish).
RADIO TAXIS
There are several private companies that can be called to order a taxi. You should bear in mind that in
these cases the taxi meter starts running at the point where the taxi driver is when (s)he picks up the
call. Please find below the phone numbers of several radio taxi companies:
Radio-Taxi Asociación Gremial: (+34) 91 447 51 80 / (+34) 91 447 32 32
Radio-Taxi Independiente: (+34) 91 405 12 13 / (+34) 91 405 55 00
Radio Teléfono Taxi / Euro Taxi (adapted for the disabled): (+34) 91 547 82 00 / (+34) 91 547 85 00 /
(+34) 91 547 86 00

Transportation from Madrid to and from the meeting site
•
Free Bus Service
INTA offers to the Lecture Series attendees a free bus service between Madrid and INTA. The bus
service will leave from Avenida de América nº 10, returning to the same departure point after the
conferences. Departure time will be 8h30’ in he morning.
•
By Car
Several routes may be used for getting to INTA by car. Probably the easiest way (but not necessarily
quicker due to traffic jams) is to start from Avenida de América, take the A-2 (Madrid- ZaragozaBarcelona highway) and follow the exit number 18, to the M-108 road, which leads to INTA. Alternatively,
INTA can also be reached leaving the A-2 at exit 17A and following M-115 to INTA (see Map below)
6
•
By Public transportation
There is no direct public transportation from Madrid to INTA. The normal way is to get suburban train
(commuter) lines C2 or C7 (see Map below) until Torrejón de Ardoz station and then take the bus 252
which connects Torrejón de Ardoz with Daganzo (continuing later on to Alcalá de Henares). This bus
has a stop just in front of the INTA main entrance.
Another posibility is to take bus 224 or 261 from Avenida de América to Torrejon de Ardoz (stops are
close to suburban train station, see map below) and then take the bus 252 to INTA.
Note that in the beginning of the street Avenida de America (just in front of the nº 25) is located a main
train-metro-bus intermodal transportation node called “Intercambiador de Avenida de América”. This is
the place where buses have to be taken.
Is is always possible to take a taxi either form Madrid or from Torrejón de Ardoz to INTA, but it is
obviously more expensive.
