In the spotlight: Kicking off Employees Care 2012
The NFL’s biggest game kicks off this weekend but
Cook Children’s had a super kickoff of our own on
Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Employees Care 2012
Long after the Patriots and Giants have crossed the
goal lines for the last time in Indianapolis, we’ll still be
driving down the field to our Employees Care goal of
$500,000 by Feb. 29. While this goal may sound lofty,
consider that last year, the generous
members of the Cook Children’s
family gave or pledged more than
$435,000.
On Wednesday, Medical Center
President Nancy Cychol, Chief
Nursing Officer Paula Webb and
Click
Vice President of Development
Grant Harris hosted these sessions explaining what
areas this year’s gifts will benefit and gave a deeper
look into how the Dodson Specialty Clinics are
shaping up.
alone will expand our campus by 274,000 square feet
and bring nearly all our specialty services under one
roof with the clinics open on March 26 and the first
surgery in Dodson Surgery Center scheduled for April
2. The layout of the floors for the departments creates a
more inviting and accommodating environment for our
patients and families.
Here to Give
The “Fulfilling our Promise” campaign is the first
option you can designate your Employees Care gift to,
which helps fund our expansion, such as the Dodson
Specialty Clinics. This new state-of-the-art facility
The other choice is the “Greatest
Need.” As you know, this fund allows
Cook Children’s to purchase life-saving
medical equipment, enhance and grow
pediatric programs, and provide care
to children whose families could not
otherwise afford it.
In addition, each session begin
with a special ‘thank you’ video created specifically for
you – the employees – for 12 years of support by giving
back. You can watch this video now on CookNet.
If you were unable to attend the kickoff, you
can watch it now and learn more about the Dodson
Specialty Clinics. Be sure to keep an eye on CookNet
the entire month of February to follow the progress of
your generosity toward our goal.

Keeping hearts beating through Project ADAM® Texas
Did you know that Cook Children’s is the only
Project ADAM affiliate in Texas?
With this distinction, Cook Children’s has become
a champion of Project ADAM’s mission of preventing
sudden cardiac arrest in children and adolescents
through proper education and deployment of lifesaving equipment.
Medical Director of
Cardiology Deborah Schutte,
M.D., serves as Project
ADAM Texas’ medical
director and Cook Children’s Laura Friend is the Project
ADAM Texas program coordinator. For Friend, her
involvement and passion for this program blossomed
from the loss of her own daughter to sudden cardiac
arrest. Her young life could have been saved if those
on the scene knew how to properly use an automated
external defibrillator (AED). You can read Friend’s
entire story here.
Education and access to AEDs are the cornerstones
of Project ADAM. With that in mind, Project
ADAM Texas is currently accepting submissions
of organizations who would like to be a potential
recipient of a FREE AED in an upcoming contest this
month. If you know of such an
organization, have them submit
a letter to Morgan Burns at
morgan.burns@cookchildrens.
org by Feb. 10. Any questions
about the contest can also be sent to this email.
With February designated as Heart Awareness
Month, stay tuned for more information about the
impact Cook Children’s is having through Project
ADAM Texas.

Losing something you don’t want to find again
One year, four months, several meetings and a deep
commitment to Weight Watchers. That’s what it took for Senior
Secretary Felicia Moore, Patient Financial Services, to lose 81
pounds.
Despite joining Weight Watchers in 2008, Moore didn’t begin seeing results with Weight Watchers until
October 2010. “It wasn’t the program that wasn’t working, it was the fact that I needed more motivation to keep
me engaged and involved,” Moore explains. That October the program at South Hills acquired a new Weight
Watchers leader, Sherma Knox, and she kick started Moore’s success.
With the easy and convenient meetings right there in the office, there wasn’t much of an excuse to not attend.
For the South Hills group of about 25 members, that convenience and motivation gives them an average member
attendance of 90 to 95 percent.
For Moore, the influence of the program was driven home in September of last year. Even though her group
took a break from meetings in September 2011, Moore didn’t gain weight. This proved to her that this was not just
a fad diet but part of her life.
“Do what you like and what works for you.” Moore found the diet changes that worked for her and then
paired that up with physical activity that she has gotten excited about – Zumba. Five times a week for 45 minutes,
Moore commits to Zumba and has even introduced members of her South Hills group to the high intensity
exercise.
With this highly encouraging success, Moore is only 10 pounds from reaching her lifetime goal but her
involvement with Weight Watchers won’t end there. Her love for the program and a desire to become more active
with it remains strong. “For me, I believe in Weight Watchers. I want to push the program and push my fellow
employees to succeed with it the same way I have.”
You can start your weight loss success story today by joining Weight Watchers for only $17.97 a month. To
receive this discounted rate for Cook Children’s, you must purchase a monthly pass through the Cook Children’s
portal (https://wellness.weightwatchers.com/Employees/Employeelogin.aspx?ReturnUrl=/). You will need
to use ID: 27996 and passcode: WW27996 to sign up. This monthly pass is good at any Weight Watcher location
including the five offered at our locations. Please contact Jill Gurtatowski at [email protected] for
more details or visit CookNet’s ‘announcements’ for a list of meeting times.
Does your team need a helping hand? Ask a Junior Volunteer
It’s difficult to think about summer when it’s barely February but now is the time to plan. If you anticipate
needing a little assistance around your department or office during the summer, a junior volunteer just may be
the solution.
These eager young people are choosing to spend a portion of their summer break pitching in across the
system, from filing to special projects. If you would like to request a junior volunteer, please contact Paige
Jordan, Junior/Patient Care Coordinator, at 682-885-5500 or [email protected].
