FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Good Morning Everyone:
2014 ends and 2015 begins with bright hopes for the future. 2014 was a
very good year with a very successful Concour in March and ending in
December with a great Christmas Party. We owe Rigo a hearty vote of
thanks for organizing it. Mark Stephenson organized a photo shoot of our
cars coming out of a turn in the mountains for a club banner to be displayed at our events to entice
new interest in what we do as a club. If your car Is on the banner it will be seen at all of our events
for a long time. For Halloween we had great time at the Old English Tearoom in Carefree.
We will begin 2015 with the 2nd. annual Arizona Concour d'Elegance on Sunday Jan. 11th. This is
a great show with some of the finest cars in the country on a scale with Pebble Beach. This years
honored guests will be Sir Sterling Moss and Norman Dewis 2 icons of sports car racing and the
history of Jaguar. Proceeds go to benefit "Make A Wish" Arizona, the founding chapter of the
national organization that grants wishes for children facing life threatening medical conditions.
Everyone from private hobbyists to automobile museums have entered their pre 1973 vehicles - you
don't want to miss this one !! - Beautiful cars on the lawn of the Historic Arizona Biltmore Resort in
Phoenix, admission $75.00.
The Arizona Concour will kick off the Auction week which starts on the 13th. In January we are
also invited to the Russo & Steele auction, more on that to come later.
This year our AGM will be on the 25th of January at the Persian Room 17040 N. Scottsdale Rd.
Scottsdale, Az. 85225. Cocktails at 6:00 PM with dinner about 7:00. We will be on the upper level
and we will order from the menu and will have a cash bar. The food at the Persian Room is terrific
and the price is right.
Now comes the hard part, I have decided not to continue as president in 2015 as it is time for new
blood and new ideas and I think Robert Bronstein is the person to do the job. I want to thank
everyone in the club for their support and assistance . I'm not going away I will continue as the
newsletter editor, however most of the hard work on that job is done by Nick Siler. In addition I will
now be the concour chairman.
I hope to see most of you at the AGM on the 25th., in the meantime keep those cats moving.

Concours in the Hills
For the inaugural show there were some 220 cars
and based on information so far about 300 are
expected in February 2015.
Most clubs we have requested their own area to
keep their members together, which we will do our
very best to accommodate, but this does present an
enormous logistics problem on a couple of fronts.
First we do need to know how many cars we will
have by January 16 so that we can make sure we
assign sufficient space for each club. This means
that individual registrations and payment must be in
by January 16. Any received after that and we will
do our best to put them in your club area but we
cannot guaranty it.

Arizona Concours honoree receives Royal acclaim
Legendary Jaguar chief test engineer and
competition driver Norman Dewis makes his first
appearance as Norman Dewis OBE at the Arizona
Concours d’Elegance on January 11 after being
recognized by HRM Queen Elizabeth II "for
services to the motor industry."
The distinguished Order of the British Empire honor
was announced Wednesday with the publication of
the 2015 New Year's Honours List, which includes
Norman Dewis of Shropshire, England, as a
recipient of the award presented personally by the
queen.
Dewis joins another famous recipient of the
Queen’s honor, renowned race driver Sir Stirling
Moss, at the Arizona Concours d’Elegance where
they will appear as honored guests of the prestigious
classic car event at the historic Arizona Biltmore
Resort in Phoenix.

Simi Valley, CA - The Petersen Automotive
Museum on the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles,
California, is undergoing its master plan of
transforming the 20-year old institution into one
of the finest automotive museums in the world.
The museum will be closed to the public
approximately one year for the renovation.
"This is a fairly rare collaboration between two
world-class museums," said Terry Karges,
executive director of the Petersen Automotive
Museum. This exhibit is a must see and is on

Simi Valley, CA - In a joint collaboration the
Petersen Museum and The Ronald Reagan
Presidential Foundation and Library in Simi
Valley, California, have formed a partnership
where the Petersen has shipped to the library an
exclusive assortment of memorable cars, many
coming from the Petersen vault and not seen by
regular museum goers.

Many of the "Hollywood Cars" had to be craned

galleries for Hollywood, History and Heads of
State. When you enter the museum you are

XKSS once owned by Steve McQueen.

racing grids more than 55 years later.

Petersen Museum's Ghia-bodied Specials Head to the Arizona Concours

Los Angeles, CA - The Petersen Automotive
Museum has accepted an invitation from the
Arizona Concours d'Elegance to display two Ghia
-bodied classics from its collection at the Arizona
Biltmore Resort on January 11. The specific cars
are a 1953 Cadillac and a 1954 Plymouth. It's a
most fitting arrangement, as the second annual
Arizona Concours will celebrate the 100th
anniversary of Carrozzeria Ghia, the noted Italian
coachbuilding company.
The museum's Cadillac Series 62 coupe concept
car was originally purchased by Prince Ali
Salman Aga Khan, the world's wealthiest man at
the time, as a gift for his wife, actress Rita
Hayworth. It is one of only two built, and both
were originally unveiled at the 1953 Paris Auto
Salon. Although Khan and Hayworth divorced a
few months after the Cadillac was delivered, the
car itself represents a perfect marriage of
sweeping, dramatic Italian style and Detroit
engineering. Originally finished in white, it has
since been repainted in a deep burgundy.
Its body hand-formed by Ghia just a year later, the
1954 Plymouth Explorer concept car was part of
Virgil Exner's grand scheme to reinvigorate
Chrysler's postwar image. Featured in the May
1954 issue of Motor Trend, the Explorer caused a
stir with its bold styling and delicate roofline. It
was built on a 114-inch wheelbase Plymouth
chassis and stood just 54 inches tall, cutting quite
a rakish figure compared to the other vehicles of
the era. The metallic green paint and white side
spears were particularly strong attempts to
redefine Plymouth's stodgy persona. Elegant as its
body design was, however, the Explorer got its
power from a stock 230-cid, 103-hp six-cylinder
engine.

Both vehicles are excellent examples of one of the
world's great coachbuilders, and are considered
among the crown jewels of the Petersen
collection. Although the L.A. museum is currently
undergoing a multi-month renovation, many of its
cars remain publicly accessible, including at the
upcoming Arizona Concours and at the Ronald
Regan Presidential Library in Simi Valley,
California.

Graham Hill's 1968 Lotus 56 Indy Turbine Car
To Be Offered at Barrett-Jackson 'Salon' Sale

Scottsdale, AZ -- One of the most innovative race
cars to ever contest the Indianapolis 500 has been
revealed as a late consignment to BarrettJackson's upcoming Scottsdale auction. The
wedge-shaped, turbine-powered Lotus 56/3 that
Graham Hill had running in 4th place in the 1968
Indy 500 until a minor crash forced him out on lap
110 will be on the block during primetime on
Saturday, Jan. 17 as a highlight of the auction's
reserve-priced "Salon" selections.

qualifying speed. In the race, all three of the Lotus
Turbines (Art Pollard was driver of the #20
turbine) were running in the top 10. Leonard was
on eventual winner Bobby Unser's tail most of the
day and was leading on lap 191 (of 200) when a
failed fuel pump driveshaft ended his day, three
laps after the same malfunction sidelined Pollard's
car. Hill's car lost a wheel and hit the wall in Turn
2 just past the midway point.
The iconic STP-liveried Lotus was one of four
such cars built by Andy Granatelli and Lotus as a
followup to the STP showman's 1967 Paxton
turbine car, which Parnelli Jones qualified 6th and
was leading the "500" by nearly a full lap until a
$6 transmission bearing failure sidelined him with
three laps to go. Mike Spence died of his injuries
in one of the four Lotus 56s while testing at Indy
in 1968.
With 80% fewer parts than its competitors' pistonpowered engines, and needing no radiator, the
turbines allowed for a clean, aerodynamic wedgeshaped body with no nose intake. The lightweight
aluminum monocoque chassis with doublewishbone suspensions, 1350-lb. weight and allwheel drive made the Lotus 56 a potent threat at

The car which until just recently was on display at
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame
Museum along with its turbine brethren, was
owned by NASCAR legend Richard Petty from
1996-2012. Subsequent owner Milton Verret
undertook a ground-up restoration to its original
1968 specs overseen by Granatelli's son Vince
and Clive Chapman, son of Lotus founder Colin
Chapman.
Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction is running an
expanded schedule for January's sale, due to a
record 1,500-car allotment cued by the gargantuan

starting Saturday, Jan. 10, and the customary
opening gala has been moved up to Sunday, Jan.

Scottsdale, AZ -- While most of the 322
million people in the U.S. are probably
focusing on the Super Bowl in Phoenix next
month, the truly illuminated will be laserlocking instead on nearby Scottsdale. That's
because the annual Arizona collector car
auction week will be on the cams here from
January 10-18. Besides the growing prestige
of the Arizona Concours d'Elegance, there
will be six big auctions from Gooding &
Company, RM, Barrett-Jackson, Russo and
Steele, Silver and Bonhams.
No two auctions share the same venue, but they
do share various dates, so you have to plan out
what you want to see, on what days, for best
effect. Barrett-Jackson has previews and/or
auction action scheduled for nine days straight.
Russo and Steele covers five days and Gooding
has four days of activities. Offering previews and/
or auctions on three days each are RM, Silver and
Bonhams.

Philadelphia, PA -- The Simeone
Foundation Automotive Museum's
original-condition 1964 Shelby
Daytona Coupe has won another
prestigious award in the form of
2014 "Car of the Year" honors
from the London-based
International Historic Motoring
Awards. Making this even more
special, the Peter Brock-designed
coupe was the first American car
to be nominated for the award, and
also the first American car to win
it.
Through an esteemed panel of 22 automotive
connoisseurs from the U.S. and abroad, the annual
International Historic Motoring Awards selects

Fall 2014 has been a good season for the
museum's Daytona Coupe. In November, it
became the first automobile ever inducted into the
American National Historic Registry, an honor
awarded in the past only to buildings, battleships
and such. Winner of the 1964 Sebring 12 Hours,
the car went on to post some two dozen speed and
endurance records at Bonneville before being
hidden away for 30 years. It is the only one of the

Le Mans Legends Field Expands for 2015

Suffolk, England -- Le Mans Legends, the

Hours of Le Mans, is expanding its grid
next year. Scheduled for Saturday, June
13, the event will feature an impressive 61

motorcycles from the estates of Dennis Hopper

that of Herb Harris.
For years the Herb Harris Collection of Texas
has been synonymous with the absolute finest
in premium, classic British motorcycles,
particularly Vincent HRD. A Harris Vincent
came to mean a motorcycle of flawless quality.
The Motorcycles
Motorcycles consigned from this famous
collection include the 1946 Vincent "1X" Rapide
B Prototype, the first post-War Vincent produced
and the first series B Rapide ever created. The
subject of a feature article in the September 2013
issue of Cycle World, 1X had been lost for nearly
half a century until it was discovered, researched
and reinstated back as a motorcycle once again by
Harris.
