Before Mass on Sundays 2nd Sunday following Mass Reconciliation: Mission Council: Web: http://st_philip_neri_mission.catholicweb.com January 18, 2015 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus Is The Lamb of God Yes, this is the year when we focus on the gospel of Mark, but in some instances we turn to the gospel of John. Here is one of the occasions. In today’s gospel, John 1: 35-42, John the Baptist points out to Andrew, one of his followers, that there is Jesus saying “Behold the Lamb of God.” Andrew then brings his brother Simon to Jesus who looks at him and gives him the name Peter. But now let’s look at the title that John the Baptist gives to Jesus, calling him: The Lamb of God. The Jewish people at Passover time offered to God the sacrifice of a year old lamb and it had to be one without any blemish. That would be the only sacrifice the people could offer, one that was perfect. That is what was offered especially at the Passover and it was then the centerpiece of the Passover meal. John’s gospel notes that at the same time that the Passover lamb was being sacrificed (about noon) was the same time that Jesus, our Lamb of God, was sentenced to death by Pilate. Note, this too was the perfect sacrifice. With the coming of Jesus into the world and his sacrifice on the cross for us, the offering of the year old perfect lamb was no longer of value. The real perfect sacrifice now becomes Jesus whom we offer and take part in each Sunday as we witness him and or receive him in the Eucharist. No greater sacrifice can be offered to God than this perfect sacrifice. Please note that this whole sacrifice of Jesus is brought to mind several times during the Mass. 1) In the Gloria we sing, “…Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father…”, praising in song Jesus as the Lamb of God. Then 2) After the exchange of Peace, the priest and or the choir sings/says, “Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us…” The priest then breaks a part of the sacred host and puts it into the Precious Blood in the chalice. Then 3) The priest holds up the host, displaying it for all to see, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” Then Jesus, the perfect lamb of sacrifice, becomes our food and drink. The congregation then replies repeating what the Roman centurion said asking Jesus to heal his servant (Matthew 8: 8) “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul (servant) shall be healed.” May we who have received and/or witnessed the “Lamb of God” here at Mass now take him with us as we leave Mass today. May we keep him ever on our mind and always in our heart. Blessings, Fr. Julien Sun. Scripture Group on sabbatical Mon. St. Vincent de Paul-Social Hall 5:45 pm Wed. The county has a ratio of seating to parking spaces on these things. We could not get a permit to build until we had enough space for the parking. Our priests purchased a modest house 1 1/2 miles from the church. We have four priests to house and the house we purchased was barely large enough to accommodate them. Two of the priests share one bathroom, and no one has a study. Fr. Julien has always put everyone ahead of himself and the other priests. It’s time to build him a proper house. We would like to call it “Julien House”. Our Rectory fund has already been established and some have already donated to this cause. Please consider making a contribution toward this effort. Fr. Julien and all our priests make such a contribution to our parish and our community. It would be great to repay them with a nice comfortable house closer to the church for their convenience. Thank you for caring. Please help us build Julien House Thanks, Joy READINGS FOR THE WEEK & Saint of the Day Jan. 18-25, 2015 Sunday: Monday: St. Charles of Sezze 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19; Ps 40:2, 4, 7-10; 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20; Jn 1:35-42 Julian Calendar Theophany (Epiphany) Heb 5:1-10; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Saturday: Sunday: Offertory Counters St. Fabian & St. Sebastian Heb 6:10-20; Ps 111:1-2, 4-5, 9, 10c; Mk 2:23-28 01/18 Ivan Lasa & Anthony Bouton 01/25 Vickie Johnson & Wayne Wetherington Heb 7:1-3, 15-17; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 3:1-6 Eucharistic Ministers ML Jensen, R.
