More Than One Way
Finding "The Image of God" on Wednesdays.
by Drew Herring, Minister of Adult Education and Outreach
In my first few months at Broadway, I have been asked several times,
"What is your vision for Christian Education?"
I have given many answers to that question, but I can sum them all
up by saying that I believe that we are all made in the image of God.
We all have unique, divinely inherited, gifts to offer to each other and
our world. My role as a minister, and our role as a church is to name,
celebrate, and strengthen these gifts. To listen for God's voice in our
diverse voices. To attempt to recognize God's multi-faceted image in
each other.
I hope that Wednesday (and one Tuesday) nights this winter and
spring will help us to catch this vision:
Last week, Dr. Karl Travis kicked off our series, "Talking About My
Generation". He challenged us to see our different ways of seeing the
world not as conflicts to be solved, but as gifts that we have to give
each other from our different life experiences. He suggested that
creating a healthy community requires the sacrifice of "making
everyone happy some of the time."
This week, (1/14) we will show a video interview of John Mitchell, and
Jorene Swift will do a live interview of Mae Cora Peterson. These men
and women who grew up during the great depression, fought in World
War II, and built the institutional church, represent the GI
("Government Issue") generation.
Each week we will highlight a different generational group. See the full
schedule here
On February 18th we begin Lent with our Ash Wednesday
service. During this season of reflection we will gather in the chapel
for Vespers worship featuring Jacob Furr (February 25th and March
4th), TBA (March 11th), and Chad Kerr (March 18th).
On TUESDAY, March 25th, all ages are invited to participate in a
Jewish Seder Meal led by our ministry partners at Temple Beth El,
Rabbi Ralph Mecklenburger and Rabbi Jordan Ottenstein.
In April and May, we will start a series called "Good Neighbors,"
featuring speakers from Fort Worth South, Inc., The City of Fort
Worth, agencies working on poverty and homelessness and local
businesses.
On Wednesday nights in January and February we will seek to learn
about each other in our study of Generations. During the Wednesdays
of Lent, we will to learn about our spiritual journeys in Vespers. In
April and May we will seek to learn about the community "outside the
four walls" of our church.
If we pay attention, I believe we will have the chance to see God's
image and feel God's presence in all of these conversations.
If you don't normally attend our mid-week gatherings, I hope that you
will make room on your calendar to try it out. A meal, conversation,
or worship service with friends, might be just what you need to
energize your weekly routine!
Thank you for showing up and sharing yourselves each week,
Drew
