An Evening with
Dr. Maya Angelou
Join us for an evening in celebration of DR. MAYA ANGELOU.
The highlight of the evening
will feature Dr. Angelou reading from her vast collection
of literary works and speaking on her storied life experiences as a dancer, actress,
author, mother, and inspiration for women, men,
and children of all ages.
We will also present original music, dance, and visual art inspired by,
and created for, Dr. Maya Angelou by UNCG School of Music,
Theatre, and Dance faculty.
Dr. Maya Angelou is one of the most renowned and influential
voices of our time. Hailed as a global renaissance woman, Dr. Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist.
She is perhaps most well-known for her 1970 publication, I Know Why
the Caged Bird Sings. She has since published more than 30 bestselling titles in fiction and non-fiction. In 2000 she received the Presidential Medal of Arts. Dr. Angelou’s words and actions continue to stir
our souls, energize our bodies, liberate our minds, and heal our hearts.

Doug Elkins Choreography, Etc.
DOUG ELKINS is a two-time New York Dance and Performance
(BESSIE) Award-winning choreographer. He got his start in the early 80’s as a “B-boy” dancing in the New York hip hop club scene.
Before founding his first company Doug Elkins Dance Company
(1988-2004), Elkins apprenticed with both Bill T. Jones and Elizabeth Streb. A 2012 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow, Elkins’ informal dance background lends itself to his
eclectic mix of hip-hop, martial arts, ballet, and modern dance.
HIP-HOP: a form of urban cultural self-expression including music (MC-ing and DJ-ing), dance (breaking), spoken word, and visual
art (graffiti).
Join us HOMECOMING WEEKEND for two nights of all things hip hop!
Friday Night will feature UNCG students in live dance, music, and spoken

TONY RICE spans the range of acoustic music, from bluegrass to jazzinfluenced acoustic music, to songwriter-oriented folk. He is perhaps
the greatest innovator in acoustic flatpick guitar since Clarence White.
Over the course of his career, he has played with J.D. Crowe and the New
South and David Grisman, as well as collaborated with fellow picker Norman Blake. He has also led his own groups and recorded with his brothers.
He has recorded with drums, piano, soprano sax, and traditional bluegrass
instrumentation. Tony Rice remains one of bluegrass’ top instrumentalists and singers, bringing originality and vitality to everything he plays.
PETER ROWAN’s bluegrass career started as a Blue Grass Boy in 1964. By
Bill Monroe’s own admission, Peter sounded a lot like him. When the two
harmonized together, they were said to have reached, “heavenly heights”.
Monroe & Rowan co-wrote what has become a bluegrass standard Walls
of Time. Peter’s touring bluegrass band consists of outstanding players
Keith Little, Paul Knight, and Mike Witcher. The band plays original songs
written by Rowan and the Carter Family and Bill Monroe favorites. This
is a winning combination for an audience that knows and loves this music.
The irreverent Elkins returns to NC with a merry band of dancers, actors, and clowns to explore the sharp intersections between
physical comedy, choreography, flirtation and romance in his latest
work “Hapless Bizarre”. Expect near misses of physical action and
attraction with high flying kicks and turns that will elicit a range of
emotions. This new work is paired with “Mo(or)town/Redux”. Set
to a top 40 sound score, Mo(or)town pays homage to Jose Limon’s
1949 “Moor’s Pavane”, which was based on Shakespeare’s Othello.
