HISTORY
Saint Margaret School
was founded in 1955
by Monsignor Bernard
T. Lennon, the former
pastor of Saint
Margaret Parish, and
was staffed by the
Sisters of Mercy.
Offering classes for
Kindergarten through
grade 8, the school has established a reputation
for excellence. In 1996 it was one of the first
catholic schools in the diocese to be accredited
by the New England Association of Schools and
Colleges. A Pre-School was added in 1990 and a
formal Middle School Program in 1993.
ACADEMICS
The goal of Saint Margaret’s Academic Program
is to meet each child’s needs through a variety of
teaching methods. Students take the core subjects
of Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social
Studies, Science and Religion in accordance with
curriculum guidelines of the Diocese of Providence
and the State of Rhode Island. Students
participate once a week in Music, Art, Physical
Education, Computer and Library classes. French
and Spanish are introduced in the third grade.
Yearly evaluations for students in grades 3-5 are
conducted using the Terra-Nova standardized
‘testing program. To ensure the highest standards
of excellence, Saint Margaret School continually
evaluates its Academic Program. The Terra Nova
results offers us the opportunity to review our
curriculum at each grade level.
FACULTY
The faculty members of Saint Margaret are
degreed and certified in their specialty areas.
They attend professional development workshops
both in their subject areas and in Church
teachings and doctrine. Their commitment to the
beliefs and values of the Catholic faith is
evidenced by the caring and nurturing
environment they create within their classrooms.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAM
The role of the elementary school is to instill a
love of learning, build self esteem and encourage
the development of caring qualities and respect
for others. The Elementary School Program
develops a strong foundation in young students
by fostering academic growth through an
approach designed to meet the educational and
emotional needs of all students. Spiritual
understanding is developed through prayer,
attendance at monthly and special Masses and
participation in community-service activities.
The Pre-Kindergarten through grade two are the
foundational years. We take time to insure that
all students in these grades have the basics in
writing, reading and mathematics. Grades three
to five are the important building block years
where more complex and interconnected
curriculum goals are strenghtened. We believe
that God has given each student special gifts and
talents. We build on these gifts and talents
during the elementary years in a number of
ways. We demand at each grade level
commitments to their studies through writing,
speaking and prayer. Students, even in the
youngest grades, lead in prayer at different times
of the year. We have a “Buddies” program which
puts our youngest students with our middle
school students for many activities throughout
the year. The older Buddies read to them, take
them to Mass and provide role models for our
youngest children. It is a match that pays
dividends to both youngest and oldest students.
Saint Margaret’s offers full day or half-day Pre
Kindergarten classes and full day Kindergarten
class.
EXTENDED DAY
Before school care begins at 7:00 AM and after
school care is offered until 5:30 PM every school
day. Parents may use this service every day or on
an as needed basis. The Extended Day program
meets the requirements of the Rhode Island
Department of Education. Students enjoy
scheduled activities and games and are free to
work on homework or school projects. Our oldest
students help our younger students with
homework and act as role models during outside
time.
ADMISSIONS
Saint Margaret School welcomes students of any
religion, race, color, national or ethnic origin to
all the rights, privileges, programs and activities
generally accorded or made available to children
at our school. Beginning September 2004,
children entering Kindergarten must be five years
of age by August 31 of that year in accordance
with rules set by the State Department of
Education.
TODAY
Today, Saint Margaret School enrolls approximately
226 students from families in our parish and local
communities. The School Board and faculty are in
the early stages of a new self study in anticipation
of our 2015 accreditation renewal by the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
S
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Saint Margaret
School is to provide a strong
Catholic education in a caring
environment. The school
community, with the support
of family and parish, encourages
spiritual growth, academic
achievement, and social
responsibility. The students are
given the opportunity to
develop their individual
gifts and talents, enabling
them to confidently
face the future.
Saint Margaret School
Sports Program
For the elementary school student
our sports program consists of a
excellent Catholic Youth Organization.
Led by parent volunteers, our CYO
offers wholesome Catholic driven
activities for our younger students.
We have been blessed with parent
volunteers who give of their time
and talent to further the work of
the Kingdom of God through physical
fitness and recereation. Through their
good work we have enjoyed watching
our students grow and mature and
exhibit good sportsmanship and
become role models for students
from other teams. All students who
participate in the CYO programs must
meet the religious, academic and social
responsibility requirements of our
Mission Statement.
