A Note from the Principal
Dear Saint Susanna School Families,
We are embarking on one of my favorite weeks of the school year—Catholic Schools Week!
I love that we celebrate our Catholic identity with fun theme days and special activities. I think it’s good that we designate a time during our busy school year to acknowledge students, parents, teachers and staff for the many ways in
which they enrich our community. And it’s also important to thank God for the gift of our beautiful faith and a Catholic education to better understand that faith.
I eagerly await our students hosting this weekend’s Masses. I know they will represent Saint Susanna School beautifully. (Whether or not your children have a part in one of the Masses, please ask them to wear their best uniforms to
Mass this weekend.)
Because there are so many wonderful things happening here at Saint Susanna, this week’s newsletter is packed with
important information. Please review the newsletter for info about Catholic Schools Week, the Soup-er Bowl competition, the big bake sale, our upcoming auction, athletic sign-ups and much more. (Plenty of stewardship opportunities are available!)
This week’s “Spartan Shout-Outs” highlight some of the wonderful ways our students have been using their Godgiven talents.
As we begin Catholic Schools Week, I’d like to express my gratitude to you for sending your child(ren) to Saint Susanna School and entrusting them to our care. I would also like to thank our teachers and staff, who would likely
earn higher wages at public entities, but make financial sacrifices to make a difference here. And thank you to Father
Glenn, who shepherds his Saint Susanna flock with great care.

For the older kids, there will be two movie rooms showing
different movies located in the middle school hallway.
Don't worry about grabbing dinner before you leave! A selection of food and candy can be purchased from our concession stand, not to mention our delicious cookie decorating station!
BOXES NEEDED FOR IGLOO STATION
NJHS is in need of tissue boxes, shoe boxes,
and other similar boxes for our “igloo station” at the annual NJHS Winterfest tonight.

2015 Saint Susanna School Soup-er Bowl
For our January mission, the 3rd graders will lead the school in a collection of soup and other non-perishable food items for Saint Mark's Food Pantry.
Saint Mark's provides lunches for many local boys and girls on weekends and throughout the summer. Grade levels will compete against each other to
see what team can accumulate the most points. The team with the most points will receive a treat!
WHEN: MONDAY, JANUARY 26 through FRIDAY, JANUARY 30
WHAT: Any can, box or packaged soup (example: Ramen noodles). All soups will be worth one point. There will be one bonus item each day
and the bonus items will be worth 5 points each.
BONUS ITEMS:
Monday: Spaghetti-O's
Tuesday: Canned Ravioli
Wednesday: Canned Tuna or Chicken
Thursday: Macaroni & Cheese
Friday: Jars of Peanut Butter and/or Jars of Jam/Jelly
All students who help us "tackle" hunger may dress out of uniform in shirts or jerseys of their favorite teams on Monday, February

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2015
Next week (Jan. 25-30) is Catholic Schools Week (CSW), and we look forward to celebrating our Catholic identity in many
ways! This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Below is a schedule, which
details theme days and special events for the week.
Throughout the week, we will be playing “Teacher Trivia” and other fun games during morning and afternoon announcements. Next week, our third graders will also lead us in our January Mission: The “Souper Bowl,” which is a soup and
canned food drive.
Catholic Schools Week also officially kicks off our 2015-16 school year registration for current school families. Registration
requests can be returned, with the $50 student registration fee, on Monday, January 26. (Please look for registration forms
to come home via backpack mail on Friday, January 23.)
We look forward to celebrating our Catholic identity and our Spartan spirit!

Gentlemen, Princesses and Volunteers Needed
Our annual “My Girl” Dance is on Friday, February 6th from 6:30pm-8:30pm in Zore Hall. Dads, Uncles, Grandpas, etc.: Invite your favorite princess(es) to the dance! There will be dancing, refreshments, contests and prizes! This event is sponsored by PTP, but donations will be gladly accepted to help offset the budget. Raffle tickets will be sold for door prizes.
We are looking for volunteers to help with set up, clean up, serving and donating refreshments, and we are in search of a
photographer. Help will be needed from 5 pm to about 9:30pm or until all clean up is done. Click on the signup genius link

SPIRIT WEAR CALL-OUT
We are sending this email to determine whether there is interest in running another Spirit Wear order.
Our vendor is not set up to run small orders. (We have to order at least 18 of an item or else the quoted price increases.) We
won't know the new prices until we know what quantity to have our vendor quote. We are doing everything we can to keep
pricing the same or as low as possible.

Our fifth grade class is helping “pick up the tab” for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana – one pop tab at a time.
We invite all classes to help us by collecting aluminum tabs from soda cans. These tabs help generate needed funds to help provide a
“home-away-from-home” for families of seriously ill or injured children receiving treatment at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health
and other Indianapolis-area hospitals. The Pop Tab Recycling Campaign began about ten years ago and has generated over $500,000
for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana.
The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana first opened its doors in 1982 to assist families from Indiana and nearby states who had to
travel to Indianapolis for their child’s medical care. The House provides a loving, caring and affordable place for thousands of families
each year. With costly medical expenses, most families are not able to afford hotel rooms over a long period of time. With the support of St. Susanna, the Ronald McDonald House will continue to serve families in need by providing them with the rest and support
they need to remain strong for their hospitalized child.
There is a milk jug in each classroom for pop tabs. In February, the 5th grade classes will take all the collected tabs directly to the
Ronald McDonald house for donations and a tour of the building. Thank you!
CALLING ALL SAINT SUSANNA SCHOOL ALUMNI
As we’ve been discussing preparations for this year’s Catholic Schools Week celebration, the staff and I decided that we’d
like to reach out to as many graduates of Saint Susanna School as possible. It would be thrilling to hear what Saint Susanna alumni are doing these days, and how they are using their God-given gifts to enrich our world. (The students would be
delighted to learn about those who have gone through these hallways before them.)
We will place forms and a box in the back of church where you may place your contact information and/or tell us a
little about where you are today. You may also send information to me via email at [email protected].
(Please include the name of the alumnus, years during which he/she attended Saint Susanna School, his/her email and
mailing address, and what he/she is up to now.) The history of Saint Susanna Parish is rich, and both the church and

Our 23rd annual event will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Serendipity in Metropolis.
This year, we would love for the entire school to be involved with the Auction. Regardless of whether you’re able to attend
the Auction, you can help contribute to the success of our school’s largest fundraiser!
How can you help?

Inquire at your own workplace. Most companies are happy to donate to events that focus on children’s education,
whether it is a monetary or material donation.

Do you have a specific talent that you'd like to share, or do you know someone who does? Donate the goods and/or
time! For example, if you teach Yoga, donate a few free classes; If you make hand-made hair accessories, you can donate
some to the Auction. We want to highlight the gifts and talents of our Saint Susanna Family.

Ask a friend/neighbor who may own his/her own business to donate. It’s a great way to advertise and get their name
out to our community at St. Susanna.

Gift cards. We’ll happily accept any type, any denomination. No worries, we will find a way to incorporate gift cards
into our event!

SPARTAN CLUB
The St. Susanna PTP is reaching out for help with our fundraiser- The Spartan Club. We have asked each school
family to buy or sell 4 tickets to reach our goal. While most families participate, we have families that may find
themselves in a financial pinch, lost their tickets, don't understand the fundraiser in general, or just forgot. Whatever the reason, I'm asking for 100% participation, whether you buy 1 at a time, sell them to friends and family, or
sell them to parishioners after mass. If you have misplaced your tickets, please contact me for more. I realize
there could be different reasons for not participating in this fundraiser, but I do want to point out that this same
fundraiser is what funds all the school events throughout the year—Donuts with Dad, Muffins with Mom, Friends
and Family Day, field day—all of which benefit you and your children.
I would like to take a moment to explain what The Spartan Club is, how it works and what it helps PTP fund.
We sell raffle tickets for $25 each, then we have weekly drawings throughout the school year while school is in
session. Each week that we have a drawing, it is worth $100, with the exception of two special, spectacular $500
drawings! Those are drawn Dec. 15th (in time for Christmas) and our final drawing May 18th, closing out our
school year. The parents of St. Susanna have chosen this particular fundraiser as a way to pay for activities that
the children benefit from, as well as providing support to your children's teachers. This keeps our children safe
from going door to door selling overpriced chocolates, candles, magazines, etc. All of these events provide FUN
from the fundraising for our children! Please stop by the school receptionist to purchase them, or contact myself
directly.

100 DAYS BRIGHTER
Our Kindergarteners and First graders celebrated the 100th day of the school year on Thursday, January 22.
They celebrated 100th Day with counting, singing and many other fun festivities.
