FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN
Dear Parishioners:
“Any telephone messages?” you ask as you walk into your home.
There was one illegible, scribbled message. You call the doubtful number.
“Did you call me?” you ask.
A voice replies, “No, sorry it must have been someone else.”
It is frustrating not to know who called you.
Young Samuel must have felt this same frustration. He heard his name called many times and
each time he was curious to know who had spoken his name. His friend, Eli, helped him
discover the identity of the caller. The caller was God.
In today’s first reading (I Samuel 3:3b-10; 19), we hear that Samuel was not familiar with
the Lord and so did not recognize his call. John the Baptist, however, recognized Jesus as the
Lamb of God and Andrew proclaimed to his brother Peter that in Jesus he had found the
Messiah. Will we recognize Jesus? How long will it take for us to become familiar with the Lord?
God knows each of us by name. As we slowly grow to know him, our reply to his call in
our life may echo the reply of the young Samuel – Speak, for your servant is listening! And in
listening we will see Jesus as the Lamb of God and recognize him as the Messiah.
Our parish patron, Saint Francis De Sales, wrote – Do not look forward to the changes and
chances of this life with fear, rather, look upon them with strong hope that, as they arise,
God, whose child you are will deliver you from them.
Much peace!
Rev. Fr. Thomas V. Doyle

VOCATIONS – ARE YOU BEING CALLED?
How are you letting God be present to you, and how is God present to others through you? The
Church needs dedicated lay and ordained ministers to help make God present to the people.
Please pray about it and, if you’d like more information about serving the Church in this way,
contact the Vocation Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn at 1-718-827-2454
