Emma Ashcroft is in her first year as the band teacher at WCCHS, and has big plans to build not only a band program but a tradition. One of the key elements in the plan is a band parents association which was started at the beginning of the school year. “Our band parents are really, really dedicated,” Ashcroft said. The purpose of the association is to promote the band program and support it with fundraising, trips, and festivals. “The band parents get the input,” Ashcroft said. That means parents can offer their feedback on everything from band uniforms to trips band students may go on. “They support me, I support them,” Ashcroft said. “We want to make (the band program) bigger and better. “(To) get the best musical experience for these kids.” Trips and festivals are not just trips though, Ashcroft emphasized, they are adjudicated, meaning they are judged where students can receive feedback on their efforts. The most recent trip was to Camp Caroline. It was another first, as it brought together students from three local schools, West Meadow and WCCHS in Claresholm, and J.T. Foster School in Nanton, where Ashcroft also teaches. The band parents association is still in its infancy. It has a treasurer, but is still looking for a president. However, they have already hosted their first fundraiser, a silent auction at the Christmas band concert on Dec. 9, which they would like to become a tradition at Christmas time. Ultimately, the association would like to become a registered society, which would open up even further fundraising possibilities. Ashcroft said everyone is welcome to become a part of the association. “It’s all about supporting students in their musical (journey),” she said. As for the band program itself, the goal is for students to start in Grade 6 at West Meadow Elementary School, and progress all the way through to Grade 12 at WCCHS. “It becomes a tradition,” Ashcroft said. “They know what to expect.” Another part of the band program is a community jazz band. It brings together students from all grades, in what is called an enhanced curriculum option, and members of the community, such as Leona Koziarski and John Vandenbeld who play French horn; Peter Weeks, who plays bass guitar; and Morris Beebe, who plays trumpet. Some of the students are not even currently taking band. “They’re just in it for the experience because they really enjoy it,” Ashcroft said. The long-term vision is to have junior and senior jazz bands. The community jazz band practises just one hour a week, and they play everything from funk and swing to rock and roll. Ashcroft’s message to the jazz band is simple. “We need to be ambassadors for band,” she said, noting the numbers are still growing. “We’re small but we’re mighty.” The jazz band has been getting out into the community, most recently performing at the seniors’ centre. “These kids are so musically talented,” Ashcroft said. “And they need an outlet.” MUSICAL VISION - Emma Ashcroft, music teacher at Willow Creek Composite High School, introducing the Grade 6 band at the West Meadow Elementary School Christmas concert on Dec. 18. Ashcroft envisions a band program spanning Grades 6 to 12, including trips, festivals, a community jazz band, and a band parents association. Photo by Rob Vogt National president of Canada visits Stavely Elks lodge By Rob Vogt Local Press Writer It’s been a busy year for the national leader of the Elks lodge of Canada, as he has visited dozens of communities offering his support and guidance. Duane Felt, the Elks’ grand exalted ruler, paid a visit to the Stavely Elks and Royal Purple on Dec. 16, where he discussed what the Elks do and heaped praise on the local lodge. Felt was installed as grand exalted ruler in July, for a one-year term. He spent August preparing for the next year and then hit the road. “My wife and I have been on the road since September,” he said. “It’s basically a year of travel, seeing how the lodges are doing.” In October they travelled to Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as well as Yellowknife and Iqaluit. November was spent in British Columbia, followed by a tour of Alberta. Recently, Royal Purple lodges across Canada have become members of the Elks, so part of Felt’s tour has involved installing these new members and giving them their charters. That was one of the duties he performed in Stavely during his visit. Felt’s ties to the Stavely Elks go back years, when he marched with them at conventions from 1999 to 2001. “I know those guys really well,” Felt said, adding he attends various events put on by the Stavely Elks and Royal Purple including the annual oyster feed and lobster feed. “It’s a lot of cama- NATIONAL PRESIDENT - Duane Felt, grand exalted ruler for the Elks of Canada, paid a visit to the Stavely Elks and Royal Purple on Dec. 16. Photo by Rob Vogt raderie,” he added. There is also a lot of hard work and dedica- tion to the community, and Felt said the Stavely Elks’ claim to fame is their size. “They are the largest lodge outside of a city in Canada,” he said, noting their membership of more than 180 makes them the fourth or fifth largest lodge overall. “They’re busy here,” he continued. That activity, which includes the annual pheasant hunt as well as other functions, has raised more than $350,000 over the last 10 years. The Elks have contributed a further $50,000 to the national charity, the Elks’ and Royal Purple Fund for Children, which assists those with speech and hearing challenges. Felt noted the Stavely Elks have accessed this fund to help local children in need. He also pointed out the Stavely Elks have contributed almost 50,000 volunteer hours over the last 10 years. The message they present is simple. “Go out and contribute, but you have to have fun doing it,” Felt said. The Stavely Elks do a lot of fundraising and catering, and other service in the community, making them a national leader in the time they commit. “It’s definitely higher than just about every lodge,” Felt said. Part of that success can be attributed to something lodges in other communities struggle with. “They bring in young members,” Felt said. And, he noted, the Elks and Royal Purple work well together in Stavely. “Overall everybody’s there to help this community and help out the kids,” Felt said. business directory Sabey & Co.
