Board Chair van den Blink Tapped for Second Term
Jan van den Blink of The Hilliard Corporation has been nominated
for a second one year term as Chair of the Chamber Board. The
unusual, though not unprecedented, decision by the Board of
Directors is a testament to Mr. van den Blink’s leadership and the
advantage of continuity during especially dynamic times for the
community and its economy.
“Jan is in the midst of several extremely important community
initiatives, including those of the Chamber,” explained Chamber
President Kevin D. Keeley. “It’s very generous of Jan and his
colleagues at Hilliard, and all of us at the Chamber are looking
forward to another productive -and adventurous- year with Jan at
the helm.”

In addition to his work with the Chamber, Mr. van den Blink has leadership obligations with Corning Community
College, the Elmira Jackals and Southern Tier Economic Growth, among several others.
Joining Mr. van den Blink on the ballot are eight candidates for the Board of Directors and five candidates for Officer
positions.

Marketing Opportunity Still Available for 2015-2016 Travel Guide
The number of tourists to Finger Lakes wineries has escalated nearly 90% in the past
decade and requests for information on the region are skyrocketing! Tourism-related

Winter Wine Events to Lure Visitors
It may be frigid outside, but two major wine tasting events in Finger Lakes Wine
Country this month are bound to warm spirits and draw crowds!
Wine will take center ice at First Arena with the return of Wine On Ice on
January 23rd and 24th when dozens of vendors will come together to offer a
chance to taste Finger Lakes wines, sample gourmet cheeses & restaurant fare,
shop for unique gifts and hear live music.

On January 29th-31st, Ice Bar 2015 will be held at Watkins Glen’s Harbor Hotel. Over 15,000 pounds of ice will be

Leadership Chemung
2014 Leadership Chemung Sessions Feature Variety of Focal Points
The Leadership Chemung Class of 2014-2015 is the largest class in the history of the Chamber, with 29 employees from
local businesses and organizations enrolled in the program. Facilitated throughout the year by Linda Lathrop, the class
participates in fourteen sessions from September until May, learning about the many facets of leadership in relation to
specific session topics.
A full-day orientation took place on September 25th with class members determining their personal management style,
learning more about the Chamber’s role in the community, having professional headshots taken courtesy of LaVere Media,
and breaking into groups to plan their volunteer projects.
On October 2nd, they met with Mark Delgrosso (Trolley Master), Christy Gray (Center for Mark Twain Studies), and
Rachel Dworkin and Kellie Huggins (Chemung County Historical Society) to learn more about the history of Chemung
County. Communication and listening skills were featured topics during the October 16th session.
In November, members heard from representatives from local and county government including Chemung County
Executive Tom Santulli, City of Elmira Manager Kim Middaugh and Town of Big Flats Supervisor Ed Fairbrother.
Economic development and planning were discussed at the second session that month with George Miner (Southern Tier
Economic Growth) and Diane Lantz (Regional Economic Development and Energy Corporation).
The December 4th session focused on public safety with Efrain Melendez (Arnot Health), and the December 18th class
explored emotional intelligence.
Leadership Chemung Commencement is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the Elmira Country Club. For

Monahan Joins First Heritage FCU Team
Julie E. Monahan has joined First Heritage Federal Credit Union as business development officer,
responsible for expanding membership and market penetration in the credit union’s three-county
market area of Chemung and Steuben Counties, NY, and Tioga County, PA. Her duties also
include developing financial education programs for area schools, businesses and agencies.
Previously, she was marketing director at Gough Holding Company, Horseheads, responsible for
strategic planning and implementation of branding strategies. Before that, she was commercial
account manager and sales producer for Perry & Carroll, Inc. Monahan’s sales experience
includes positions with Federated Mutual Insurance Company, Steuben Glass, Corning
Incorporated and Hilton Garden Inn, Elmira.

Among her various achievements, she is a member of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs
Council, Elmira Kiwanis Club and graduate of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Chemung

Mother School.
Monahan is active in community service, volunteering with CVSA Sports, Little League baseball, Make-A-Wish
Foundation of Western New York and United Way of the Southern Tier.

Food Bank President & CEO Elected Vice Chair of Feeding America’s National Council
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announced today that Natasha Thompson, President and CEO, has been elected to
serve as the 2015 Vice Chair of Feeding America’s National Council (NAC).
The NAC is the elected representative body of the Feeding America’s network of food banks. The NAC gives voice to the
members at the national level and helps the Feeding America set goals and policies that affect the entire network.
“Representing the Eastern region on the NAC for the past two years has been a tremendous honor as well as a terrific
opportunity to bring new ideas from around the nation back to the Southern Tier,” said Thompson. “Next year will be an
exciting time to serve as Vice Chair with the Feeding America network to build and sustain hunger-free communities all
across America and right here in the Southern Tier.”

Youth Bureau Receives Publication Award
The Chemung County Youth Bureau has received a Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society (GVRPS) Publication
Award for their Zombie Dance Party Flyer and Poster. The award was announced at the GVRPS Annual Conference on
November 21, 2014, which was held in Penfield, NY.
The flyer and poster was designed to attract middle and high school students to an event co-sponsored by the Youth
Bureau and First Arena in Elmira. The Youth Bureau and First Arena have built a strong partnership and have co-hosted
numerous events for the youth within the County.
The graphic was adapted from the popular hit show The Walking Dead. The Zombie Dance Party was a successful,
constructive, and pro-social Halloween event for the students of Chemung County, which included Zombie
Transformation Stations, a Dead Yourselfie Contest, a DJ, black lights, videos and food.
YWCA Offers New Pool, Recreation & Fitness Classes
The YWCA presents two new Zumba classes, Zumba and Zumba Gold. Zumba is fitness and a party all wrapped into one.
Come enjoy an exciting new class Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Zumba Gold is the same as
Zumba but with less intensity offering a great work out for older active adults. Instructor Rachel Kaufman says get ready to

Increasing Number Of High School Students Enrolled in CCC Courses
High school students in New York’s Southern Tier and northern Pennsylvania
are enrolled in 196 college courses offered by Corning Community College
(CCC), which includes 30 new courses as compared to the Fall of 2013.
Courses are offered through the Accelerated College Education (ACE)
program, a nationally accredited concurrent enrollment program in which
high school students take CCC courses at their high school and earn college
credit.
“Successfully taking college-level courses while in high school is a confidencebuilder,” said Kimberly Perkins, director of academic outreach and ACE
program director. “These students put on a college hat while they’re in an environment that is comfortable. Often, they’ve
known the teachers, the other students, and the environment for years. Everything is aligned for their success, so they
come to college with rock solid evidence that succeeding in college is possible.”
Courses being offered this year range from Accounting Practices and American History to Economics and Principles of
Physics. The classes are offered with reduced tuition rates and are taught by high school teachers who have been approved
by the academic divisions of CCC and the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs.
“The ACE program has been invaluable in our rural district,” said Sarah Glashauser, a Spanish teacher at Prattsburgh
Central School who also teaches an accelerated version through CCC’s ACE program online. “These classes provide our
students with the opportunity to challenge themselves academically while earning credits toward a college degree at an
affordable cost.”

Chemung ARC Awarded River Friends 2014 Business of the Year
Chemung ARC announces it was recently presented with the River Friends
2014 Business of the Year Award for its partnership with River Friends.
River Friends initiated a pilot program early this year to improve our natural
environment, expand volunteers’ job skills and discover more of the community.
Southern Tier Industries (STI) worker-trainees and staff worked alongside other
volunteers to improve river trails, boat launches and fishing areas.
