The Two Corridors Foster Opportunity and Optimism
As two distinct economic development initiatives capture the interest and involvement of members, there is a growing
sentiment that both have the practical potential to make a major positive impact on the community’s economy and
lifestyle.
Informally referred to as The Two Corridors, the development concepts are distinctly unrelated yet equally
compelling. One corridor is in downtown Elmira while the other corridor follows a swath of Interstate 86 roughly
between Horseheads and Painted Post.
With industrial, retail and residential components served by the new Interstate and an impressively growing ElmiraCorning Regional Airport, the I-86 Corridor is being assessed for optimum development by a collaborative committee
of public officials, private business leaders and economic development professionals. Because the roughly 18 mile
corridor crosses the Chemung / Steuben County line, the committee has representatives of both counties. It is a long
term venture made all the more promising by the inclusiveness of that committee roster.
In Elmira, the downtown corridor encompasses a couple blocks on
either side of Main Street, beginning at Water Street and extending
north through the Elmira College campus. The corridor is seen to be
key to making the elusive yet crucial community connections of
residents and retail, town and gown, boomers and millennials, recreation
and healthcare, commerce and industry. Once embraced and undertaken,
the corridor has the potential to transform not only downtown but the
entire city and beyond.
New Travel Guide Now Available
Perhaps the more timely of the two corridor efforts, the downtown
venture has an eclectic group of cooperating players, including leaders
of the City, County, Elmira College, First Arena, STEG and the
Chamber, working with engineers, bankers, other business and
professional firms and property owners. Once again, the new optimism
is fueled by the camaraderie and selfless commitment of the
participating individuals and agencies.
For the Chamber, both corridors illustrate the opportunity and
obligation implied earlier this year by Chamber Chair Jan van den
Blink of The Hilliard Corporation, when he said, “The promise is
worth the pursuit.”

2015-16 Chemung County Visitor Guides Arrive
The 2015-16 Chemung County Visitor Guides have arrived and are already being distributed to take the story of Twain
Country to numerous information & visitor centers and AAA offices across New York and northern & central Pennsylvania.
The new guide was designed to entice visitors with an upscale magazine format that includes editorial alongside eye-catching
photos. Suggested itineraries have also been incorporated to help travelers plan their time here. But beyond appealing to just
visitors, businesses will find the publication to be a valuable tool in their relocation efforts by providing a convenient way to
showcase the area’s many cultural and lifestyle offerings to potential employees.
Along with the printed version, a full version of the Chemung County Visitors Guide will also be available on the Chamber’s
tourism (www.MarkTwainCountry.com) and business (www.ChemungChamber.org) websites to further promote our
community. Those visiting these sites will be able to link directly with local attractions and accommodations to get more
information or firm up reservations.

CMoG Expansion to Boost Area Tourism
The opening of the Corning Museum of Glass’ North Wing addition is
anticipated to benefit the region by giving tourists yet another reason to extend
their time exploring Finger Lakes Wine Country.
Local tourism attractions such as Tanglewood Nature Center & Museum are
among those who see the opening of the long-awaited addition as a perk both
locally and regionally. “We already have people coming to Tanglewood after
picking up our rack cards at CMoG’s information center, and we certainly see
larger crowds and longer stays as an asset,” noted President Elaine Spacher.
The new 26,000-square-foot gallery building is devoted to
contemporary art and houses five galleries containing diverse works.
The 100,000-square-foot Contemporary Art + Design Wing includes a new
26,000-square-foot contemporary art gallery building, making it the largest
space in the world dedicated to the presentation of contemporary glass art. A
former Steuben Glass factory building next to the gallery has also been
converted as part of the project and includes a 500-seat auditorium to allow for
the expansion of the museum’s popular hot glass shows.
The Corning Museum of Glass first opened its doors in 1951. Last year it had
more than 400,000 visitors, making it the 18th most visited attraction in New
York State.

The $64 million wing at CMoG features panels of white glass,
and an exhibit space largely lit with natural light from expansive
windows and a full roof skylight.
Soaring Museum to Host Quilt Exhibit
The National Soaring Museum at Harris Hill will present a quilt show entitled, “Soaring with Quilts,” on Friday, April
24 - Sunday, April 26. The event will include quilt demonstrations and presentations, a raffle, and on site appraisals by a

The ARC of Chemung Reveals New Brand Identity
The Arc of Chemung, formerly Chemung ARC, has joined The Arc’s national brand in the spirit of energy and a renewed
commitment to providing opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families.
A dynamic new logo is the new face of The Arc of Chemung and it will be on publications, The ARC’s website, signs at
community events and more. The logo will unite affiliated chapters across the country under the banner “Achieve With Us,” a
call to move forward and take the road leading to progress, inclusion and respect.
The logo design reflects the energy and determination of The Arc to support and embrace people with I/DD and their families
across their lifetimes and across diagnoses, including Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other intellectual and
developmental disabilities.
“Our new brand identity represents a new day for The Arc of Chemung. The new logo is bringing the work of a strong and
energetic organization front and center in our community and is a bright reminder that we provide opportunity: opportunity
for hope, opportunity for growth, opportunity for change, and opportunities for individual successes,” said Michael A. Doherty,

Corning Credit Union Hosts Annual Senior Dance
Corning Credit Union will host its 9th Annual Senior Dance on April 11th, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., at the
Corning Museum of Glass. Seniors can dance the night away as the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra plays tunes from
Count Basie and Duke Ellington, as well as well-known standards that were performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Nat “King” Cole.
Seating is limited to the first 250 seniors who register and typically fills quickly for this popular event. Reservations are

Bright Ideas by Martinec Welcomes New Designer
Mari Fawcett has recently joined Bright Ideas by Martinec as their newest Kitchen and Bath Designer.
She will be using her talents to assist clients with their remodeling projects from the beginning idea to
the completion of the project, to include estimating and material choices.
Mari graduated from Philadelphia University in 2009 with a degree in Interior Design. Previously she
spent 4 years working as a designer in a high-end flooring store assisting clients with custom showers
and kitchen backsplashes for their homes.

The Hunt for the Gold Shoes Kicks Off May 2nd
Chemung County residents can get moving and win great prizes for the 10th annual “Hunt for the Gold Shoes.” Between
May 2nd and May 29th, residents can seek out more than 350 painted gold shoes hidden on local parks and trails.
Walkers who find a shoe will be eligible to win great prizes like athletic gear, balls, camping supplies, bicycles, skating
passes, swim passes, and many more.
Shoes will be hidden at Tanglewood Nature Center, Big Flats Community Park, Sperr Park, Park Station, Holding Point
(Horseheads), Sullivan Park, Thorne St. (Horseheads), Chapel Park (Southport), Pirozzolo Park (West Elmira),
Lackawanna Rail Trail (Elmira), Eldridge Park, and Catharine Valley Trail (Millport).

The Five Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 105th year of Scouting programs.
Scouting continues to be a strong, vital presence in our nation and in our local communities. Young
people of both genders benefit greatly from various Scouting programs and are better off because of it.
The three aims of Scouting are Character Development, Citizenship, and Personal Fitness.
In 2014, Indian Waters District delivered Scouting to 802 youth and 308 adults in 40 Scouting units. Fourteen earned the
Eagle Scout Award and thousands of hours of community service were performed. 2015 promises to be even better.

River Friends Announces First 2015 Guided Paddle Trips
The Friends of the Chemung River Watershed (River Friends) is sponsoring at least
three guided paddles on the Chemung River this year.
Each trip is less than 10 miles and is designed for beginner and novice paddlers, and
includes kayaks, equipment, bus transportation, safety talk, guides, educational talks
along the way, and plenty of fun and surprises.
Cost is $25 per person and sponsored, in part, by the Xerox Foundation. The trips are
equipped and led by Southern Tier Kayak Tours. Each paddle features a river-related
educational talk or a boat launch visit with guest speakers.

leads a River Friends paddle.
Paddlers may request one-person or two-person kayaks. The kayaks are assigned to paddlers based on their weight and
height. We stress safety. Life vests are provided and must be worn and buckled the entire trip. Each trip includes a basic
paddle lessons and learn-as-you-go instructions from the tour guides.
The paddles are relatively easy, with a few small riffles and low spots where paddlers may have to drag their kayaks over the
river bottom for several yards. Paddlers should dress for the weather, wear hard-sole and laced/Velcro footwear (no flip-flops
or clogs) and bring a change of dry clothes in a waterproof plastic bag. Hats, sunscreen, bug repellent, water bottles and
cameras are recommended. No cell phone use during the paddles, please.
Each paddle is limited to the first 20 paddlers who register and pay the $25 fee. To register and learn more about each trip,

Below are the scheduled paddles, with more to be announced later in the year:
June 14: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., eight-mile trip on the Chemung River from the Grove Street Boat Launch in Elmira to the Toll
Bridge Park Boat Launch at the Lowman Crossover in Wellsburg. This trip includes a unique float and view of downtown
Elmira from river level as we paddle under six bridges and make a short walk on the Chase-Hibbard Dam portage.
Aug. 8: 1 to 4 p.m., seven-mile paddle from Bottcher’s Landing Boat Launch to Fitch’s Bridge Boat Launch, both in Big
Flats. Features views of the steep shale palisades cliffs and a mid-way stop at a rocky shoal to explore and learn about life
under the river rocks.
Sept. 13: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., seven mile paddle from the Bottcher’s Landing Boat Launch to the Fitch’s Bridge Boat Launch,
both in Big Flats. The palisades tour will go through the steep river valley of woods, meadows, farms and towns – with a
good chance to see bald eagles and other river wildlife.

Elmira College Offers Professional Development Courses
The Office of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies at Elmira College is offering several non-credit professional
certificate programs designed to assist working professionals in strengthening job skills and meeting continuing education
requirements.
There are two certificate programs and two professional credentialing exam preparation courses scheduled to begin in the
spring — Disaster Management Certificate, Cyber Security Certificate, Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM)
exam prep course, and Project Management Professional (PMP) exam prep course.

Historic Elmira presented their Seventh Annual Preservation Awards at an event held
in Elmira College’s Hamilton Hall. Advocate Awards were presented to Diane Janowski
and Earl P. Robinson. Project Awards were presented to James R. DeLaney and Marc
G. Rubin.

in historic preservation,” said Kaye Newbury, President of Historic Elmira, Inc.

Friedman Launches New Business, Extends Summer Event Invite
On January 1st, 2015, DAMOMICS Inc. was sold to Soft Intelligence Inc. of Atlanta. Both businesses are long-time
businesses supporting small and mid-sized retailers with their operations, inventory, customer interfaces, accounting and
point-of-sale needs. Combining the operations and adding the additional local office, Soft Intelligence now is a top 5 NCR
Counterpoint partner, maintaining most local and remote DAMOMICS Inc. staff.
DAMOMICS Inc. was founded in 1982, and moved to Elmira in 1984, employing ten to thirteen professionals. The new
office of Soft Intelligence Inc. is located in the Strathmont Center, 100 North Main St., Suite 321.

First Heritage Donates Car Seats to Rural/Metro
After learning about the challenges of transporting local, seriously ill children with a need for a higher level of care to area hospitals
for medical treatment, First Heritage Federal Credit Union donated new car seats to Rural/Metro Medical Services of Corning.
Rural/Metro provides emergency and non-emergency, inter-facility ambulance service to hospitals and long-term care centers for
patients requiring medical supervision during transport. A commitment to patient care and safety are paramount to the company’s
EMTs and support staff.
“We believe community support is a strong component of who we are as an organization. So giving back when and where we see
a need helps make our communities better places to live and work” said Chris Panosian, Community Development Officer for the
credit union.

ARC of Chemung Urges Legislators and Governor for Support
Families, advocates, and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across New York State are urging State
legislators and Gov. Cuomo to include adequate funding in the New York State Budget to meet the critical need for supports
and services for people with developmental disabilities.
“Changes in government policy will only make the situation worse for families,” says Michael A. Doherty, Ph.D., Executive
Director of the Chemung County Chapter of NYSARC. “Some families we support have saved the State a lot of money by
providing care for their loved ones for many years. It’s time for the State to return the favor and meet its responsibilities.”
NYSARC officials are calling for more attention and resources for appropriate housing options, training and maintaining
professional direct support staff, and expanded opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to lead a fulfilling life.
