FROM our PASTOR
ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH FAMILY
January 18, 2015
The 42th Year
Respect and care for the life of each person is one of the key pillars of the Church’s teaching about living
as a disciple of the Risen Christ. The other is the promotion of the common good and is the key to
understanding the Church’s teachings on social justice. This year we mark the 42nd year of the US
Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in America.
In our society and world today violence against human life is all too prevalent. Abortion, especially in our day, is an icon
of such violence. Saint Pope John Paul II called us to create a Culture of Life rather than a Culture of Death. The following
paragraphs from Pope John Paul II’s encyclical The Gospel of Life are particularly poignant and consoling with regard to
the issue of abortion.
“Procured abortion is the deliberate and direct killing, by whatever means it is carried out, of a human being in the
initial phase of his or her existence, extending from conception to birth.
The decision to have an abortion is often tragic and painful for those involved, especially the mother. Sometimes the
decision is not made for purely selfish reasons or out of convenience but out of a desire to protect certain important
values such as health or a decent standard of living for the other members of the family. Sometimes it is feared that the
child to be born would live in such conditions that it would be better if the birth had not taken place. Nevertheless, these
reasons and others like them, however serious and tragic, can never justify the deliberate killing of an innocent human
being.
I would like now to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors
which may have influenced your decision and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering
decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong.
But do not give in to discouragement and do not loose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it
honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You will come to understand
that nothing is definitely lost and you will be able to ask forgiveness from your child who is now living with the Lord.
With the friendly and expert help and advice from other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can
be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone’s right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by
accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them,
you will become promoters of a new way of life.”
(The above paragraphs are taken from Saint Pope John Paul II’s encyclical The Gospel of Life. See especially paragraphs
#’s 58, 59 and 99.)

support to about 2000 people living in impoverished villages. The

THANK YOU ST. CHARLES PARISHIONERS Because of your generosity,
the Knights of Columbus collected 52 bags of warm winter coats and jackets
for Nativity House, the weekend of Jan. 3-4. This helps keep the homeless
warm during these winter months. Thank you for being generous and sharing with the
poor of our community.
Our RE Junior High Youth Group will once again be collecting loose change after the
Masses on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1. They plan to donate their proceeds this
year to Heifer International, a nonprofit charity organization working to end hunger
and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to
struggling communities. SAVE your change and help these young people
make a difference.
The St. Charles Borromeo School’s Annual Fund is an essential part of funding for
our school. It was created to help bridge the gap between our tuition, and the actual
cost of educating a child. The benefits of the Annual Fund are twofold: we are able to
reduce tuition for families who may have difficulty paying for a quality Catholic
education and offset annual tuition increases for EVERY family. Remember...Your
donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of
being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please
contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040.

Mr. Dan Hill, Principal
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Each year we celebrate Catholic School’s
Week, not just in our own school, but in
all of the Catholic schools across the
country. Next weekend, January 24th
and 25th, we begin our celebration right
here in the church. Our choirs will be
singing and our students will attend in
uniform at each of the Masses. On
Sunday, we want to honor YOU! We are
going to have a full breakfast for everyone
after the 8 and 10 Masses, and this year we
are bringing back the pancakes, sausage,
bacon, juice, eggs and whatever else we
can fit on the plates. The teachers will
join me in Feist Hall and will be doing the
cooking and cleaning of the tables. I hope
you can make a plan to join us and it
would make me very happy to see all of
the tables full of parishioners. Make us do
the work while you enjoy the breakfast! It
is the least we can do to show our
appreciation to one of the best parishes in
the Archdiocese of Seattle.
Please remember to keep our students,
and teachers, in your daily prayers. Many
prayers are needed for many different
reasons, and I do appreciate your prayers
for all of us.
See you at the breakfast next weekend!
Sincerely, Mr. Hill

Rachel’s Corner
Hope and Healing After Abortion
If a history of sexual abuse has existed
before an abortion, the woman may experience the abortion itself as simply a further continuation of the violations of self
that have gone before. After the abortion, just as after episodes of sexual
abuse, she must be prepared to hide her
shame, guilt, despair and grief behind a
painted mask of normalcy. We can
help. Healing and hope are awaiting you
on a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat™.
The next retreat is March 6-8, 2015.

with our parish
Lenten project!
This year at Lent the parish will read:
LivingtheMass:
HowOneHouraWeekCanChangeYourLife
Divided into six segments, each week you have an opportunity to explore an area of the Mass and
how you can incorporate it into your daily life. Throughout Lent you will explore: what Christians
are called to do and be, what qualities and skills are needed to live as Christians, and how one
hour a week we spend at Mass, should, and will change your life. Small groups are encouraged as we all learn more by sharing our stories and experiences. For more information on the book please see
www.loyolapress.com/living-the-mass.htm.
We need your help with:
1) Folks to help sell the books in the vestibule before and after all the Masses on:
February 7th & 8th at 5, 8, 10, 12:30 & 5:30 Mass in the vestibule
February 15th at 8, 10, 12:30 & 5:30 Masses
Ash Wednesday February 18th at 9, noon & 7 Masses
We have order 300 books and are asking for a $5 donation.
2) Group leaders for small group study at the parish. Like previous years we will provide opportunities to gather with other parishioners to discuss the book and share experiences on
how one hour a week we spend at Mass, should, and will change your life.
3) Put together a group of friends, people you sit with in the pews, other parishioners you
know from school, coffee or dining places, sports, etc. This will provide you with an opportunity to better know each other as well as grow in your spiritual life. A six week study
guide will be provided.
To help sell the books at Mass or form a group please contact
Renee at [email protected] or 564-5185 ext. 3037 for more information.
