A new release from Harry Manx is always a cause for celebration, but his latest recording takes it to the
next level. 20 Strings & The Truth is the instrumental album Manx fans have been waiting for (p.28). Jazz
fans will appreciate the latest from the HighNote group. Jeremy Pelt’s Tales, Musings and other Reveries
offers an interesting session of originals and standards (p.24), while Jim Snidero’s Main Street takes
listeners on a compelling sonic trip across America (p.25). New music from Morocco is the focus of
the World Village’s new release featuring Aziz Sahmaoui and the University of Gnawa (p.27). Going
from strength to strength, Hyperion’s star pianist and Canada’s own Angela Hewitt plays Liszt on a new
release featuring the B Minor Sonata (p.15). Hyperion’s popular Romantic Cello Concerto series reaches
volume six with a disc of works by Vieuxtemps featuring cellist Alban Gerhardt (p.13). Pianist Gloria
Cheng’s second release for harmonia mundi entitled Montage features works by some of today’s most
acclaimed film-music composers including Alexandre Desplat and Randy Newman (p.9). The latest rediscovery from harmonia mundi’s René Jacobs is Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s musical drama Rappresentatione
di anima et di corpo - arguably the first opera ever written (p.7). Elgar’s Symphony No.1 kicks off Onyx’s
new series of recordings of the composer’s orchestral music featuring conductor Vasily Petrenko (p.21).

Lux Aeterna – Visions of Bach
Piano transcriptions by Kempff, Siloti & Busoni
IMPORT
For her début recording on Aparté, acclaimed Swiss pianist Beatrice
Berrut offers listeners an intimate vision of the music of Johann
Sebastian Bach. Playing on a rare Bösendorfer prototype, Berrut has
assembled a program comprised of transcriptions by Wilhelm Kempff,
Alexander Siloti and Ferrucio Busoni, a selection of Chorales and three
Études in Baroque style by the contemporary French composer Thierry
Escaich. Together these works demonstrate both the timelessness and
universality of Bach’s music and the Baroque period’s lasting effects on
composers of today.

CHAUSSON Concert Op.21
FRANCK Violin Sonata
IMPORT
This release featuring violinist Rachel Kolly d’Alba, pianist Christian
Chamorel and the Spektral Quartet Chicago, presents two major
works of chamber music written at the dawn of the twentieth century.
Few works of the period are more recognizable than César Franck’s
magnificent Violin Sonata. The work has been transcribed for nearly every
instrument on the planet, and is a permanent staple of the repertoire.
Franck’s influence on Ernest Chausson’s Concert is unmistakable. A lateRomantic hybrid, the work blends elements of piano quintet and string
quintet styles.

MENDELSSOHN String Quartet Op.13
IMPORT
The Chiaroscuro Quartet was founded in 2005 by four students from
the Royal College of Music in London, led by violinist Alina Ibragimova.
Playing on period instruments and bows, the group’s repertoire focuses
primarily on works of the Classical period. This release pairs Mozart’s
String Quartet K421 with the String Quartet Op.13 by Felix Mendelssohn.
These masterpieces of the repertoire are illuminated by the Chiaroscuro
Quartet’s insightful performances.
“Ibragimova and her colleagues have in two recordings
come to the top of the heap. No other ensemble

Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera existed, Emilio
de’ Cavalieri’s musical drama Rappresentatione di anima et di corpo combines

The work’s libretto, attributed to Agostino Manni, presents a musical

The summer of 1846 was to be the last that Chopin would spend at
George Sand’s estate in Nohant. It was there that he composed or
completed the core of his works over a period of seven years. That last,
golden summer produced some of Chopin’s most ambitious pieces,
including the Barcarolle, the Nocturnes Op.62a, and of course the Cello
Sonata, the very last work published in his lifetime. Pascal Amoyel and
Emmanuelle Bertrand plunge us into the heart of those few months
before the couple’s separation; the ailing Chopin did not yet know that
he was leaving his musical testament.

Over the course of his tragically short life, Alexander Scriabin wrote
monumental works of great import. In between these efforts he
produced a steady torrent of miniatures – concentrated gems of this
same expansive genius. Fascinatingly, the title Poème is applied both to
symphonic works and to the extended series of thirty-four piano pieces
recorded here. Their inspirations are as varied as their titles and they
offer a key into their composer’s inner world. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson
is an acknowledged master of the genre, and this new Scriabin recording
will only enhance his already admirable reputation.

Volume six of Hyperion’s superb Romantic Cello Concerto series features
German virtuoso Alban Gerhardt. Vieuxtemps and Ysaÿe are best
known for their pyrotechnic compositions for the violin, but each also
wrote two works for cello and orchestra. Little-known today, they are
nothing short of a revelation. The two Vieuxtemps concertos contain
all the elements familiar from their famous violin counterparts. The
Ysaÿe works are shorter and make ideal companions. Gerhardt rises to
the formidable challenges presented by these composers. Sympathetic
orchestral support comes from the Royal Flemish Philharmonic led
by Josep Caballé-Domenech.

Western music as we know it today has its roots in the fourteenth
century, and most famously in the pioneering works of Guillaume de
Machaut. Why he chose to set his remarkable poetry to music in this
way we may never know, but the results continue to hold those who
hear it enraptured. Few groups have matched The Orlando Consort –
formed in 1988 specifically to explore this repertoire – in capturing and
recording the essence of Machaut. This is the group’s second volume in

intimate part of a very public composer’s body of work.

Jeremy Pelt stands as a strikingly unique musician, his work consistently
sleek and polished yet bristling with the spirit of invention. A concise
technician but also a charismatic improviser, Pelt flourishes in a lean,
modernist language influenced by classic bebop phraseology. He delivers
his lines with authority and economy, the pinpoint accuracy of his tone
well-suited to the heightened elegance of his delivery. On this release,
Pelt offers an interesting session of originals, standards and music by
Wayne Shorter and Clifford Jordan.

In his fifth release on Savant Records, alto saxophonist Jim Snidero
draws from a quarter-century of touring to create a compelling sonic
trip across America. Main Street is inspired by towns throughout the USA
and features one of the hippest rhythm sections in Jazz; Fabian Almazan,
Linda Oh and Rudy Royston. The result is a cohesive yet spontaneous
concept album that deftly balances both tradition and modernism. Main
Street offers an attractive mix of grooves and moods that lets this talented,
young rhythm section stretch out and show that they mean business.

20 Strings & the Truth is the instrumental album Harry Manx fans have
been waiting for. His signature instrument, the 20-string Mohan Veena,
is the focus of the album and vocals appear on just one track. Many of
the tracks are based on Indian ragas, where Manx uses the ‘mode’ of the
raga as a foundation in creating his own songs. Much like a good raga,
this collection of instrumental works is a great soundtrack to whatever
journey you are on.

Jazz Village’s Magma series primarily focuses on classic recordings, reissued in celebration of the band’s 45th anniversary. However, Slag
Tanz – a masterpiece of symphonic metal – has previously only been heard in live performance. Magma first released Félicité Thösz in 2012.
Dominated by the celestial voice of Stella Vander, it was the band’s first studio album since they re-formed in the early part of the century.
With lyrics in French (which is not common in the band’s discography) as well as Kobaïan, the language invented by Christian Vander, Félicité
Thösz is a trip which will lead you from Japan to the Urals via Central Asia, with a detour to pay homage to Tamla Motown. Powerful, hypnotic
and unclassifiable, there has been absolutely nothing like Magma in the last fifty years.
