NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS
Iván Fischer’s Mahler symphony recordings for Channel Classics have fired up critics more than any
cycle in recent years. With uniformly stellar performances and rich, spectacular surround-sound audio,
these discs are self-recommending. Not surprisingly, Fischer’s release of the Symphony No.9 may garner
the highest accolades of all. From the first note, it is obvious that this is a reading that will stand the test
of time. Young German pianist Joseph Moog is one of today’s rising stars of the keyboard. His fourth
release for Onyx features a pair of concertos, one well-known (Grieg) and one less so (Moszkowski).
As always, Moog’s superb technique and insightful performances will delight listeners. The English
ensemble Arcangelo present their first all-instrumental disc for Hyperion – a program of wind concertos
by Mozart and Haydn. The Nash Ensemble is featured in a fascinating disc of American chamber music
that includes works by Copland, Gershwin, Hermann and Waxman. Also on Hyperion, the amazingly
talented violinist Alina Ibragimova performs the fiendishly difficult solo sonatas of Eugene Ysayë and
Steven Isserlis, accompanied by Stephen Hough, is the soloist in a fascinating disc of cello sonatas
including a new work by Hough. Early music ensemble Stile Antico has graced the world stage for over
ten years now. This month, harmonia mundi offers a specially-priced 10th Anniversary SACD featuring
personal favorites of the group’s vocalists. The Flautadors recorder quartet débuts on First Hand with
Cynthia’s Revels, a lovely disc of music from the Elizabethan period, and for jazz and blues fans, this
month includes important new releases from Harold López-Nussa, Ahmad Jamal and Lucky Peterson.

grand manner, and each fled Russia after the revolution. That Kitain is the
least known can only be put down to misfortune as these recordings attest to
a pianist of fabulous talent. Sadly he failed to ‘make it’ after his emigration to
the USA and slowly faded from view, giving his last New York concert in 1963.

have had one of the most extraordinary voices of the past century.

working for years in New York, Rainer returned to Paris after WWII

Recorded live at Covent Garden in January 1962, this largely British
cast of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte – the one exception being Hans
Hotter as the speaker – was very much the resident company at
Covent Garden in the early sixties. The star of the evening was
Geraint Evans as Papageno, whose interpretation of the role was
already very familiar but who rose to new heights of excellence
on this occasion. The other principals, all veterans of the resident
company, contributed first class performances backed by the Royal
Opera House Chorus and Orchestra led by Otto Klemperer.
