CAN I HELP YOU?
As I turned to go down the aisle in the grocery store I spotted him... an elderly man
appearing to be lost. As I walked closer I could see a sad look in his eyes. I felt an
urge to say something to him. "What should I say?" I wondered to myself. "Can I help
you find something?" I heard myself saying. "Thank you, I really need some help," he
answered. "Tell me what you are looking for and I'll try to help you find it," I said.
"Why did you stop and talk to me? You don't work here, do you?" he asked.
"Well, I could see by the look on your face that you seemed to need help," I answered.
With that, he introduced himself. "Hi, I'm Albert.* This is the first time since my wife
died that I've been to the grocery store. My wife always did the shopping and I'm really lost in this big store. Thank you for helping me." I leaned over and gave Albert a
hug. I told him that only a few weeks earlier my son, Todd, had died in a car accident.
We shared a faint smile knowing that we both had been through a tough time. As I
pondered what had happened I realized that going though this grieving time had
brought something out in me that wasn't there before. My eyes seemed to be opened
and I noticed other hurting people. I'm sure the year
before I would have been like the other people in the store, who walked by and didn't
see the hurt in this man's eyes.
In II Corinthians 1:4 it reads: "He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to
help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves
have received from God." God had helped me though this terrible tragedy of Todd's
death, and now He was enabling me to see the hurt in others
and reach out to help them.

Is The New Year Going To Bring Us Happiness Or Sorrow?
The new year has already brought mass killing in France. There is a lot of talk a national ID card is coming to the world.
Many countries already have it but the United States stands at 45 percent. In 100 nations the national ID card is mandatory. Most other nations are optional like the United States. There are plans to impose this card upon America in 2015.
The Bible in Revelation 13:16-18 clearly prophecises that under the reign of the antichrist every person will be required
to have a number without chic he or she cannot buy or sell anything. Most Biblical scholars believe if the United States
adopts this national ID card in 2015 it will set up what the Bible calls the mark of the beast. We all know that our world is
moving away from cash to a system of electronic transactions. Several nations are very close to abolishing cash completely.
The use of electronic payments allows the government to track and control things for their benefit. Our country and the
rest of the world will deal with terrorist attacks. Folks how close are we to the end times the Bible talks about? World leaders are talking about a (New World Order). According to the Holy Bible in the last days a 10 nation confederacy will be
formed in Europe. From this political union one man will rise to power called the antichrist. He will confirm a 7 year
agreement with Israel and the arab nations. This will bring on the Great Tribulation Period also lasting 7 years. This new
world order will be controlled by him.
Besides this a European super state is forming in Europe. The European Union is composed of 28 member countries
with a population of 550 million people. Croatia has most recently joined. So far German chancellor Angela Markel is
leading everything. She favors the federalization of Europe as a way to stop the threat from Russian aggression. The awakening of the Russian Bear is causing many problems. Britain and Greece are talking of pulling out of the Union.
What is happening in Europe is a battle for power. When this European super state becomes organized it is known in
the Bible as the revised Roman Empire. America beware, folks many things will be taking place in this new year 2015.
Some will happen faster than you think. No matter what happens in the future folks pray to our God in heaven that we
may have peace and safety here. Thank You!

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who
trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.
Amen.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Just about everyone is trying to eat more whole grains these days, but it can be confusing because food labels don’t
list whole-grain content alongside carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Should you choose whole-wheat bread or Wonder Whole-Grain White bread? Should we buy our kids a sugary cereal, like Count Chocula, “with whole grain
guaranteed” on its label? It is complicated, but that doesn’t mean we should abandon efforts to replace processed
white bread, pasta, and bagels with barley, brown rice, and whole-wheat breads and pastas. In fact, a new Harvard
School of Public Health study offers fresh reasons to stick with it. That project, which involved 118,000 health professionals, found that those who ate nearly two servings a day of whole grains had a 9 percent lower risk of dying
from any cause and a 15 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease over 25 years compared with those who ate
less than a serving. “The current recommendation is that people eat three 28-gram servings a day of whole grains,
and our study participants didn’t even eat that much and still had associated health benefits,” said study co-author Dr. Qi Sun, an assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health. Replacing foods made
with refined white flour with fiber-rich whole-grain varieties likely confers health benefits because intact grains —
that retain their bran, endosperm, and germ — have more nutrients and take the body longer to digest, which
helps prevent unhealthy spikes in blood sugar levels. Some nutrition experts, however, say advice to get more
whole grains may be overly simplified. “The term whole grain is one of the most confusing areas in nutrition
today,” said Dr. David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston
Children’s Hospital. “Are we talking about sugary breakfast cereals advertised as containing whole grains or traditional whole grains like brown rice, wheat berries and steel-cut oats?” In a 2013 study, Ludwig and his colleagues
found that processed foods with a whole-grain stamp on the label tended to contain more fiber but also more calories and sugar than those without it. While Ludwig won’t quibble with those who eat slow-cooked oatmeal for
breakfast or make their sandwiches on dark rye, he said we could improve our health even more by substituting
refined carbohydrates with fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts, which tend to have even more nutrients than whole
grains. - DEBORAH KOTZ

Lying there on your back was just plain miserable. Even with my friends coming in I was still having issues
with the anchors. Every morning they would x-ray my neck and bring me back to my bed. The stuff between the vertebrae was just not healing. The doctor would tell me to make sure I was lying still, that my
neck was not getting any better. Looking back, I am sure it was my fault. I just couldn’t lay still. I even
remember curling a small bar bell to keep my left arm strong. What an idiot. I just didn’t get it. My neck
was broke. I could have been paralyzed. How did I get this far without being paralyzed? I am sure God
must have had a hand in that. I’m sure I did everything I could to mess it up. The floor I was on in Sarasota must have been the place for all the broken necks to go because I remember when another boy that
was only 19 was brought in. They had him on a big silver wheel. He had broken his neck in 7 places they
told me. They could spin him around and around. He could be turned any way they needed for him to be.
Unfortunately, he was paralyzed from the neck down. It was terrible. They told me he had a diving accident as I did. That he had dove into the Peace River in Nocatee. That he had hit his head on a rock.
OMG!!! Another diving accident. Again, I still didn’t get it. I had a diving accident but I wasn’t paralyzed. Sure, I couldn’t pick my right arm up but I could feel it and move my hand and fingers. I just
couldn’t pick it up. But somehow, I just didn’t understand that that could be me. That I could have been
paralyzed. Even though the Doctors had told me that if I had looked down, even once that day at the lake,
if my buddy hadn’t put his hands on my neck and held my head up straight, I would have been. I just…
didn’t…. seem.. to get it. Why did I make it and he didn’t? Is there a reason that I am still alive? Is there
a reason that I’m not paralyzed? Two other people had come into the same hospital. Two other people had
broken their necks by diving. One is dead and the other paralyzed. Why am I the only one?
Only God knows that answer. But over the years I have not been the only one that has asked
God that question………….

Food For
Thought
by: Stephanie Corwin
Last Saturday we had the honor of hanging out with some really neat kids from our middle school at the Riverdale Kiwanis
Medieval Faire. After setting ye olde alarm clock for a time
way too early for Saturday, we had Curtis at the bus loop of the
middle school by 9am. (When you're 13, I guess you'd rather
ride a smelly bus with your pals than in the car with your parents.) We met up with the group, divvied up the kids between
the adults, and set out on our merry way. Right off the bat we
met up with a nutty lady who got our group set up to collect
signatures from either the Vikings or the French, who were
wandering around the faire. We chose the Vikings and set
about our task of getting 12 people to sign our sheet. It's a
sneaky way to get the kids involved with the actors throughout
the park. Shameless, yet effective. We visited the merchants,
looking at handmade wares and baubles, all the while smelling
the yummy scents of renaissance style food (which means
LOTS of meat!). As we were strolling along, a trio of stilt-walkers got our group's attention. The Barely Balanced show was
about to begin. The group of Margret, Cameron, and Jimmy,
lovingly referred to as Small, Medium, and Large, kept the
standing room only crowd on pins and needles for the entire
performance. Hilarious, daring, and just downright likable,
these acrobats wowed the audience.
Watching all that action made us work up an appetite. Plus, we
were really close to that great-smelling food. Curtis had to try a
turkey leg. After all these years of seeing folks at theme parks,
county fairs, and the like, carrying around a pterodactyl-sized
drumstick, Curtis decided now was the time to bite into one.
He ate and ate, got full, tried to give the rest to me or his dad,
and finally gave up and threw away almost half of the darn
thing. I, on the other hand, wound up with a Hog on a Log better known as a pork chop on a stick. Yes, it was everything
you'd think it would be. (I intend to talk Scott into perfecting
them.) They offered everything from cheeseburgers to bread
bowls filled with stew. Fried dough, strawberry shortcake, funnel cakes, and roasted corn were among the other scrumptious
fare to be enjoyed. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
Next on our list was to watch a jousting match. Pretty spectacular, if I do say so. Four worthy opponents on huge, gorgeous
horses battled it out in the arena, cheered on by a packed
crowd. Those guys took some terribly hard hits, not only from
the lance, but also when they'd get knocked off their horse and
fall to the ground. Then they beat up on each other, as well as
sword fighting. So much action!
The end of our day was when the guys of our group worked
diligently to acquire the remaining signatures they needed. Between the four boys, they tracked down Vikings, each one of
whom had their own method of doing things. One Viking made
them run a race for his John Hancock, another made them recite a Norse saying, and one other had them make up their own
Viking name. The boys loved it. And in return for all 12 signatures, they each got a set of gold beads to show they had completed the quest. Overall, everyone had a great day. I can't wait
for next year!
