“
I’m proud to work for a company that makes
water stewardship one of its top priorities.
— Michael Powers, Mosaic’s South Pasture Mine
”
Michael Powers is a DeSoto County resident and operator at our South Pasture Mine in Hardee County. He helps
keep the mine’s water recirculation system running – which is key to managing our water supply and producing
the phosphate crop nutrients farmers use to grow our food supply. In fact, employees like Michael have helped
Mosaic reduce groundwater use in our Central Florida operations by more than 50 percent over the last 20 years.
Michael knows that water is not only important for Mosaic’s operations, but that it’s also an essential natural
resource for our local communities. Michael is just one of the many Mosaic employees dedicated to the
communities where we all live, work and play.
Visit mosaicindesoto.com and mosaicco.com/florida for more information.
We help the world grow the food it needs.

A GOOD LAUGH
It was a bitterly cold, Winter's morning. The snow that had started to melt the day before
had frozen again. I was walking my dogs, wishing that I could teach them to use the bathroom indoors. Every breath in hurt a bit and every breath out was a cloud of frozen mist. I
looked up and noticed the morning sunrise. Thin pink and purple clouds drifted across the
sky. Even with the cold it looked like Heaven was smiling down on me.
I thanked God for this beautiful gift as I took another step in the snow. Only it wasn't snow
that I stepped on. It was ice. My feet flung into the air. My body crashed to the ground. My
shoe slipped off my foot and I found myself still staring at that sunrise but with an aching
butt, my back on the ground, and two worried dogs licking my face. A strange sound was
coming out of my mouth as well. It wasn't a moan or a curse.
It was a laugh. I lay there for another minute laughing and enjoying the absurdity of it all,
before getting up and heading inside.
That wasn't the first time a good laugh had saved me from anger and pain and I am sure it
won't be the last. Laughter is one of our greatest gifts from God. It exercises the body. It
clears the mind. It lightens the heart. It comforts the soul. It takes the fear out of life and
replaces it with joy. It reminds us that no matter what this world throws at us we can overcome it. It reminds us that we can choose happiness over despair.
It reminds us that we can live in love today, tomorrow, and forever.
The next time you feel like laughing then don't hold it back. Let it out. Laugh long, laugh
hard, and laugh well. See this crazy, confused world for what it is and laugh at it anyway.
God made us to love and God made us to laugh. To do both is to truly embrace life.
May all of your days be full of giggles and grins. May your soul always
sing with the song of sweet laughter.

Why Do Nations & Empires Fall From Power Decline & Collapse?
History shows us major nations decay within spiritually morally and financially. The Roman Empire did not
collapse for lack of military power for no one could math her, but she fell away. Social decay can ruin any great
nation including the United States. The Bible gives us some wise wisdom. 2nd Chronicles 7:14 tells us if my people shall humble themselves & pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then. Will I hear from
heaven and will forgive. their sins and will heal their land.
The disintegration of any nation is Godliness. To live without regard for God his will and his plan for us his
people. Can a nation be secure if we have removed from the hearts of the people the belief in God? The people
desire a perfect government, with perfect freedom and justice. Our perfect government has never come about in
200 years of American history.
People are becoming more & more bitter over political systems. Man will never achieve a perfect government.
Jesus Christ is the promise God gave to us for a perfect system. Whatever hope our nation has is totally dependent upon our people. If people today will head and obey his laws they may expect a response and continue in sin,
America has no hope. God is waiting for his people to repent, to pray & turn from their wicked ways.
Our republic desperately needs leaders who dare to do what they believe to be true right and just no matter
how many oppose them. We need leaders who dare to tell us not what we want to hear. America take heed you
have forgotten the Lord your God. Folks America did not just happen, we were put here for a reason. Our roots
of growth, industry and prosperity have Biblical roots. We are people dominated by lust and greed.
We demand the right to sin but deny to live in righteousness. Is it any wonder we are losing our influence and
leadership in the world. Our founding fathers took God seriously. If America doesn’t take God seriously she is
going to lose everything. God demands our obedience. Western civilization has been slowly slipping away. When
nations shun the church and the Bible and even God it cuts itself off from its own roots.
WAKE UP AMERICA
Good Ole Boys "Later"
After four or five weeks of the same kind of days, moving around, looking around and
keeping my neck from being anything other than still, the doctor came in and told my parents that they were going to have to try something else. The traction behind my head just
wasn’t letting my vertebrae heal. I would just not be still enough for the stuff between the
vertebrae to grow back. They were going to take a piece of bone off my hip and put that between my vertebrae and see if that would fuse together. But, they were not sure that would
work either. The biggest problem was that I would just not lay still. I know. It was my
fault. Like I said, I just didn’t get it then. No matter what they told me, I just would not
listen. Funny how that sounded. Grownups telling a teenager to listen and they actually
expected me to do what I was told. Maybe that helped me to be a better dad because years
later when my boys were teenagers, I could still remember the doctor’s advice and how I
just didn’t listen. Anyway, the surgery was set up and I was to go under the knife the next
day. They didn’t want to wait once the decision was made. My neck was just not healing
and they had to do something. So early the next morning, in I went. They told my parents
that anytime you work with the spinal cord, there could be a problem. My mom told me
later that she was scared to death that I would lose my right arm completely or maybe even
be paralyzed from the neck down. She was in constant contact with my grandparents &
having them pray for me. My grandparents told me later that all my family had being
praying. I am sure that my grandma spent a lot of time in her prayer closet praying for me.
Remember that’s the grandparents I stayed with every summer when I was growing up.
But they didn’t tell me any of that before I went in…

Special Occasions
Congratulations to Mr. Will Brunty, Teacher of
the Year for West Elementary!! Parents and
students know what a wonderful teacher you
are and will never forget you. You have a
special teaching gift from God. You don’t
forget your students when they move up,
which you showed by inviting us to be your
guest at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet. Your acceptance speech was so good,
right from your heart. We can’t thank you
enough for caring for us the way you do –
you truly are the Teacher of the Year!

Too many people grow up.
That's the real trouble with the
world, too many people grow
up. They forget. They don't remember what it's like to be 12
years old. They patronize, they
treat children as inferiors. Well I
won't do that.

''Can I drink diet soda and still lose weight?'' The follow-up question is usually: ''Is it true that diet beverages can
make me feel hungrier?'' That’s when I know that they are seeing some of the same confusing headlines about diet
beverages that I often see in the local and national news media, and even more frequently on the web.
What I love about my job is that I get to try to find answers to some of these puzzling nutrition questions. To that
end, my colleagues and I just completed a study that asked the question: what effect do diet beverages have on
weight loss? We were surprised by the answers, which makes me think that you may be, too.
First, here’s what we did: we recruited more than 300 people who wanted to lose weight and were already drinking diet beverages at least three times a week. We then randomly assigned them to one of two groups, and over 12
weeks, all of them received an identical diet and exercise regimen. The only difference? In one group, we asked
them to give up something they enjoyed -- drinking diet beverages – and agree to drink only water, and at least 24
ounces (or three cups) of it every day. In the other group, we allowed them to keep enjoying diet beverages, but
asked that they consume at least 24 ounces (or two cans) per day. At 12 weeks, we ended this phase of the study
and looked at the results. Since diet beverages and water have zero calories, we expected that both groups would
likely lose about the same amount of weight. The surprise? The diet beverage drinkers lost an average of 13
pounds during the 12 weeks—four pounds more than those in the group that drank water only.
We also learned that the diet beverage drinkers felt less hungry than their counterparts. And that more of them
would lose five percent of their total body weight. And that their blood cholesterol levels would improve more than
their counterparts. These were very significant findings and we published the first phase of our study in the journal Obesity. Now, we are completing the second phase of the study, which will end in August. We want to see how
both groups of dieters fare over the long term, and we plan to publish those results as well.
In the meantime, however, I have a better answer to give to my patients when they ask about diet sodas. Now I
can tell them: ''Yes, if you’re trying to lose weight, you can still do so while enjoying diet beverages.''
I can also tell them that, according to our results, having diet beverages may make them feel a little less hungry
and that, in turn, might help them stick with their goal of losing weight. - Holly Wyatt, MD

of his grandchildren and never

Food For
Thought
by: Stephanie Corwin
It sure is nice when someone makes you smile. More often
than not, most of us tend to get so caught up in our own
daily grind that we miss out on the opportunity to share a
smile with those around us. Fortunately, there are still some
folks out there who go above and beyond to bring joy to all
those they encounter. The inspiration for this article came
from the Post Office last week. I walked in to have a letter
postmarked and was shocked to see 4,587 people already
standing in line. I proceeded to drop the smile I had carried
in with me, tripping over it on my way to take my place in
line. The line chugged along steadily, all because of a sweet
lady with an indomitable spirit and professional, yet friendly
demeanor. Tiffany was the only postal worker at the counter,
but you never heard anything negative come from her, nor
did she ever seem overwhelmed by the line that continued to
grow, no matter how many folks she served and sent on their
merry way with a smile. Thank you, Tiffany, for the great
service and your great smile. Another wonderful person who
always makes me smile is Christy at Pizza Hut. She acknowledges me by name every time I come in to pick up my
pizza. (She calls everyone by name, but I like to pretend she
only does that for me - it makes me feel special.) Heck, she's
been known to recognize my voice on the phone and even
knows what I typically order. Now THAT'S someone who is
committed to their job. And she does it all with a smile. Connie at CVS is also on my list of people who make me smile.
We've gotten to know each other over the years and I always
look forward to a quick stop into CVS for the opportunity to
say hi. At Amoco (you can call it the BP Station, but it'll always be Amoco to me), Ann has probably said hi and smiled
at me a thousand times over the years. Mostly, I like her because she gives Scott a hard time when he comes in to get
gas. All the wonderful ladies at the tag office (DeSoto Co.
Tax Collector) are always full of smiles and knowledge
about any and all things tag/tax related. They make it almost painless when you have to write a check for your tag
renewal. Gwen at First State Bank has always been warm
and friendly, smiling as she asks about my day. The remarkable women at A's Giant Subs are some of the most proficient people I've ever met. They can build your lunch in no
time flat, all the while laughing and joking with you. My
pals Tracy and Kathy at Barnhill's Barber Shop never cease
to make me laugh. Whether I'm in a good mood, a bad
mood, or just want to kill some time and hide out, I know I
can go to the barber shop and always leave feeling better
than when I got there. The smiling face behind the desk at
the Peace River Shopper belongs to a sweet woman named
Angie. She sends me kind words about my article and just
makes me feel good in general. Right now she probably
wants to wring my neck, but she's too nice to actually do it.
(I hope so, anyway!) So, overall, there are lots of really
friendly people here in DeSoto County. I hope your day is
filled with them. And don't forget to smile!
