Announcing!! 2015 Westkirk Mission Trip - Athens,
Greece! We are excited to announce the 2015 Westkirk Mission trip will be to Athens, Greece. Our plans are beginning to
take shape and we wanted to share some of the basic information
you may need to decide whether this trip might be for you!
Dates: October 3-11, 2015
Cost: $2,500
Objectives: We will be visiting Westkirk supported missionaries,
Argyris and Dina Petrou. We’ll visit their various ministries, explore Corinth and the Acropolis, and help in their work of reaching out to the youth of Athens.
More information will be coming. If you are at all interested,
please contact Brandon Mick or Sue Holcomb soon. This trip is
limited to only 8 people.
Call to Annual Meeting. This is the official call by the Session for
the Annual Meeting of the Congregation of Westkirk Presbyterian
Church on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. Please mark
your calendar and plan to attend.
The evening will begin with a potluck supper in the Great Hall at
5:00 p.m. Bring your favorite dish to share. The business meeting of
the congregation will follow at 6:00 p.m. The Nominating Committee will present the candidates for the offices of Elders and Deacons
to be elected. The financial report will be reviewed and the 2015
budget will be presented for approval.
Your presence and vote are very important to the life and health of
Westkirk. Reserve the evening of Sunday, January 25, 2015 now!
Attention: those who like to knit and crochet. We have an
opportunity to provide warmth and comfort to the girls and women
who have been involved in sex trafficking in Des Moines and who
will be coming to Dorothy’s House. We would
like to provide hand knitted or crocheted afghans
for them. What a wonderful way to show our
Christian love and caring. This can be done out of
the comfort of your own home – no meetings to
attend. Use whatever pattern and yarn you desire
but something washable would be preferable. If you have any questions please contact Cynthia Fisher or Sue Holcomb. We look forward to having you join us in this ministry.
Souper Bowl Sunday. We invite you to participate in Hope Ministries’ Souper Bowl Sunday on February 1st by bringing cans of any
variety or brand of soup and putting them in the red Campbell’s barrel located in the Narthex by February 1st. The soup will be used to
stock Hope Ministries’ pantries and to feed those who come to the
shelters for meals. Let’s fill this barrel to the brim and provide nice
hot meals for many needy people. Thank you for being a blessing to
those in need.

Additional Resources on Church Discipline
Pastor Michael's sermon series, "Guarding One Another: Church
Discipline Today," takes its outline from the small group study
guide of the same name that is available for your Housekirk in our
small group resources collection. The sermon series focuses on
these passages:
Hebrews 12:3-11
Colossians 3:12-17
Galatians 6:1-5
Matthew 18:15-20
2 Corinthians 2:5-11
For your own study, note also:
1 Corinthians 5:1-13
From Chapter 30 of the Westminster Confession of Faith:
WCF 30.3 Church censures are necessary, for the reclaiming and gaining of offending brethren, for deterring of others from the like offenses,
for purging out of that leaven which might infect the whole lump, for
vindicating the honor of Christ, and the holy profession of the Gospel,
and for preventing the wrath of God, which might justly fall upon the
Church, if they should suffer His covenant, and the seals thereof, to be
profaned by notorious and obstinate offenders.
The Westkirk Book of Government, Membership Vows:
5. Do you submit yourself to the government and discipline of the
Westkirk Presbyterian Church to the spiritual oversight of this Session,
and do you promise to promote the unity, purity and peace of the
Church?
The Westkirk Book of Discipline, §1-5 Purpose of Discipline:
The exercise of discipline is highly important and necessary. The purpose of discipline is to maintain the honor of God, to restore the sinner,
and to remove offense from the church. Ministers must instruct the
officers and congregation in discipline and jointly practice it in the context of the congregation and courts of the church.
