Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
The parish offices and the Conesa Center are closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr
Day. In a message last summer on the occasion of World Cup Soccer, Pope Francis said, "To win, we must
overcome individualism, selfishness, all forms of racism, intolerance and manipulation of people . . . Let
nobody turn their back on society and feel excluded! No to segregation! No to racism!” As brothers and sisters
in the Lord, we have a responsibility to work toward building a society in which each person is valued as son or
daughter of God.
Additionally, this Thursday, January 22, our nation marks the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the
Supreme Court decision making abortion legal throughout the U.S. Since that tragic decision, more than 56
million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss -- often in silence. As you know,
in all dioceses of the United States this day is observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of
the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person
committed through acts of abortion. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to pray earnestly on this day for our
nation and for those whose hearts have been hardened against life. You can participate in daily Mass, pray the
Rosary, read Sacred Scripture, or go out of your way to offer a kindness or sacrifice for someone in need. Each
of us can offer up something before the Lord and so do our own part in building up a culture of love.
Lastly, this third week of January is observed as a week of prayer for Christian unity. The Decree on
Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) of the SecondVatican Council states, “For although the Catholic Church
has been endowed with all divinely revealed truth and with all means of grace, yet its members fail to live by
them with all the fervor that they should, so that the radiance of the Church's image is less clear in the eyes of
our separated brethren and of the world at large, and the growth of God's kingdom is delayed” (I.4). What can
we do live our Catholic faith with fervor so that the radiance of the Church’s image shines more clearly?
God’s blessings to you and your families - Father Kovanis

CATECHISM CORNER
St. Vincent de Paul
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: 608 After agreeing to
baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at
Jesus and pointed him out as the “Lamb of God, who takes
away the sin of the world”.422 By doing so, he reveals that Jesus
is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows
himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the
multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israel’s
redemption at the first Passover.423 Christ’s whole life
expresses his mission: “to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.”424
