An Intimate Hour of Haitian Jazz
Sunday, January 5 at 2:00 p.m.
Buyu Ambroise, (tenor and soprano saxophones)
will perform many original compositions. This
music reveals a natural relationship between the
complex poly-rhythmic structures in both the
North American form and the Afro-Caribbean
sound of traditional Haitian music. This fusion is
the birth of a new musical style that encompasses
the two and sustains the mix effortlessly. Although this subgenre
of World Jazz is considered cutting edge, Buyu’s recordings and
live performances are executed with a spirit and level of mastery
that invoke a gentle blend of harmonies that have matured on
Haitian and American stages for generations. Buyu will be
accompanied by Allan Mednard (drums), Frederic LasFargeas
(piano) and Bobby Raymond (bass).

PARIS!
A Movable Musical Feast
Sunday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m.
Is there any city with more charm than the
beguiling city of Paris? If you think “no”, you will
find yourself in agreement with the likes of
Debussy and Liszt! Painters, poets and cultural
prophets have always come together in this fabled
city, and the rest of the world has followed suit.
Chopin could not live without the elegant Parisian
life, and when Debussy left to visit Rome he was in torment. If
you are ready to voyage à Paris, let Masterwork Conversations
be your tour guide through this musical feast! Pianists Matthew
Harrison and Vlada Yaneva began their unique Masterwork
Conversations series in 2010.

Why The “War on Terror” is Not Working
A NEW YOU FOR THE NEW YEAR:
The so-called “War on Terror” seems not to be
working. Despite the staggering financial and human
costs, terrorism continues to thrive. Thomas DiCarlo
witnessed the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks, surviving only
due to a twist of fate that kept him from a meeting
inside one of the towers. The trauma changed him
forever and caused him to consider the motivations of
terrorism and ineffective ways in which the Western
world has tried to combat it. He along with his sister,
Connie D. Atkinson were inspired to write a new
thriller, The Brotherhood of Purity, that explores these
themes.
If your resolutions for 2014 include a better diet and
optimal weight, join this lecture for pragmatic tips
Registered dietitian Pnina Mohr will highlight current
diet recommendations from leading health organizations with easy modifications for your meals as well as
supermarket navigation, cooking, and dining out.
Pnina has taught undergraduate health and nutrition classes, developed
plant based recipes consumer food demonstrations, worked as dietitian in
employee health fairs, and has been a contributing interventionist on general
health and wellness for couples in a prostate cancer study. She continues to
work with clients’ nutrition concerns for various health and weight issues.

your motivation to improve your health behaviors

program). This workshop is interactive, please
bring pen and notebook. Dr. Valerie Conlan, R. N., Ph.D., C.A.S.A.C. is a

Hollywood Dances: Music of Irving Berlin
Tuesday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m.
From the 30’s - 70’s the Hollywood musical was among
the most popular forms of entertainment. At the heart of
many of the most successful movies were the great dance
numbers. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Ann Miller, Gene
Nelson and others created dances that still lift our spirits.
In a multi-part series, you will see many of the most
famous numbers as well as some outstanding ones you
may have missed. Our facilitator is Phil Malamud.

Changes In Our Lifetime
with Howard Shurdut
Thursday, January 30 at 2:00 p.m.
Many could argue that advances made in
women’s rights are the crowning achievement during their lifetime. However, the
changes go far beyond one such momentous area of
human development. Business, technology, demographics, energy alternatives, public morality,
privacy, security, and ethics are all significant matters
we MUST discuss to understand if we are to function
in this new world in which we find ourselves.
It’s All About LOVE
with Diane Hoffman
Sunday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m.
Almost every entry in the American Song
Book deals with, what else? LOVE! The
shades of love are limitless and so there is a
bottomless well of inspiration for the
songwriter’s pen: love dreamt of; love longed for; love
found; love afire, love grown cold; love lost; love
mourned. This show presents a sampling of the most
successfully expressive love songs. Many are from the
golden period of songwriting which stretches from the
nineteen thirties into the nineteen sixties, but more
recent works are represented as well. Tunes include:
“What Is This Thing Called Love”, “So In Love”, “The
Man That Got Away”, “At Long Last Love”, “When Your
Lover is Gone” and many more wonderful tunes!
