COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION
T
he Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ awards
scholarships every year to graduating public high
school seniors living in the Houston area and
throughout Texas.
Since the Show began in 1932, more than $330 million
has been committed to the youth of Texas. Currently,
more than 2,000 students are on Show scholarships,
attending more than 100 different Texas colleges
and universities. The value of these scholarships is
approximately $30 million.
As you grow older, you may want to raise an animal such
as a calf, pig, lamb or goat. When the animal grows up,
you may even want to show it at the Houston
Livestock Show™. You can sell your animal at the
Show’s auctions and earn scholarship money for college.
Remember to stay in school, do your homework and
make good grades! One day, all of your hard work
might earn you a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
scholarship.

ALL ABOUT THE TURKEY
The turkey is one of the most famous birds in North America.
Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the official bird of the United States
of America rather than the bald eagle.
The turkey’s popularity comes from the American people’s love of eating the
bird for holidays.
Domestic, or tame, turkeys are raised on farms and weigh twice what a wild
turkey does.
Most domestic turkeys are so heavy they are unable to fly.
Baby turkeys are called poults. When they hatch, poults are unable to fly for the
first two weeks of their lives.
A male turkey is called a tom. A female turkey is called a hen.
The flap of skin under a turkey’s chin is called a wattle. It turns bright red when
the turkey is upset. The flap of skin that hangs over a turkey’s beak is the
snood; it also turns bright red when the bird is upset.
DID YOU KNOW PIGS...
...do not sweat because they don’t have sweat glands. This means they are naturally clean and
become dirty when they roll in the mud to cool themselves off.
A pig’s sense of smell is very strong and sensitive. It can smell food from a few feet away, even below
the ground.
Pigs are also referred to as swine and hogs. A female pig is known as a sow, while a male pig is a boar.
Young pigs are called piglets.
A sow can have a litter of up to 12 piglets about twice a year.
Pigs are very smart animals and learn quickly. They are even smarter than dogs!
Some pigs have straight tails while others have curly, corkscrew-like tails.
