19 January 2015 UPCOMING WORKS: NORTHERN ZONE Leach Hwy and Tonkin Hwy, Cloverdale and Redcliffe Continuing throughout January and February 2015 Passing members of the travelling public can now see the final alignment of Tonkin Highway taking shape in the vicinity of Leach Highway. The alignment is adjacent to the stretch of road currently in use and travels under the largest bridge of the new interchange and over the top of another bridge and pedestrian / cyclist underpass. The asphalt placement has progressed well during the start of summer, along with some of the finishing works such as kerbing, street lighting and both concrete and steel permanent safety barriers. Whilst asphalting for the Tonkin Highway alignment continues underneath the main bridge and at the intersection of Dunreath Drive, the team is also focusing on preparing the area on top of this bridge, which will take traffic travelling from Leach Highway to Airport Drive, as well as the on-ramp for the Tonkin Highway southbound carriageway, for asphalting. The realignment of a section of Tonkin Highway northbound traffic between Great Eastern Highway and the Dunreath Drive intersection toward the east late last year has opened up a significant work area allowing the construction of the new Tonkin Highway / Dunreath Drive interchange and upgrade of the highway to also progress. In late December the bridge deck was poured and in early January the final Mechanically Stabilised Earthwalls (MSE) panels were installed for the new interchange structure. Looking ahead, earthworks and pavement construction activities will continue to be the focus in the coming months to build the ultimate northbound lanes of Tonkin Highway between Great Eastern Highway and Dunreath Drive intersection and the new interchange structure adjacent to Redcliffe Park. Upcoming work details LEACH HIGHWAY BETWEEN FISHER STREET AND TONKIN HIGHWAY TONKIN HIGHWAY BETWEEN FAWCETT CRESCENT AND TERELINCK CRESCENT Works to be undertaken in the vicinity of these areas during this period include: > Construction of road pavement, involving delivery, placement and compaction of sub-base material and laying asphalt > Delivery and movement of construction materials and earthworks to import and remove fill material around the structures forming the new Tonkin Highway / Leach Highway interchange, nearby the current intersection > Traffic changes including the temporary closure of the intersection of Dunreath Drive / Tonkin Highway > Steel fixing, concrete pours and delivery of materials for the construction of interchange structures. TONKIN HIGHWAY BETWEEN TERELINCK CRESCENT AND GREAT EASTERN HIGHWAY Works to be undertaken in the vicinity of these areas during this period include: > Delivery and movement of construction materials and earthworks to import and remove fill material, particularly along the western side of the highway. This will include the placement of approximately 50,000m3 of material in the area adjacent to Redcliffe Park to backfill behind the new bridge structure > Steel fixing, concrete pours and delivery and lifting of precast parapets and other materials for the construction Reference: GWA-NZ-COR-0131 of new interchange structure > Installation of road network drainage, involving trenching and laying pipes, along the western side of the highway between Great Eastern Highway and the existing Dunreath Drive intersection > Continuing to construct the Principal Shared Path, involving asphalting, along the western side of the highway, north of the Dunreath Drive intersection > Road pavement construction, involving delivery, placement and compaction of sub-base material and laying asphalt, with a focus on the western side of the highway between just north of Great Eastern Highway and the existing Dunreath Drive intersection to construct the ultimate northbound lanes of the highway > Installation of a duoceptor, involving dewatering, sheet piling and excavation, within the road reserve between the Tonkin Highway southbound off-ramp to Great Eastern Highway and Locock Street in Ascot. The duoceptor separates oil from Tonkin Highway storm water runoff prior to discharging into the river. ACROSS THE NORTHERN ZONE > Investigative activities including service location / potholing and survey > Adjustment of traffic barriers, changes to signage and line marking and realignment of traffic to create safe work areas and complete newly constructed areas > Installation of services, including road network drainage, street lighting and telecommunications > Finishing works, including signage and steel and concrete installation, and kerbing > Landscaping activities, including the delivery and spreading of mulch. Changed traffic conditions Changed traffic conditions will be in place while some of these works are underway, including a reduced speed limit and lane closures. Signage will be in place to guide motorists through any changed traffic conditions. Motorists are encouraged to factor additional time into their journey. Working hours Work in the Northern Zone will be carried out Monday to Saturday day shift (between 7am and 7pm) and Monday to Friday night shift (between 7pm and 5am), excluding public holidays. There may also be occasional weekend work required outside of these hours. Emergency maintenance and repair work may also need to take place outside of these times. Gateway WA recognises the impact out of hours works may have on local residents and will make every effort to minimise disruption.
