LOCAL HELP WANTED – YORK REGION
How do I create a Canadian-style résumé?
While Canadian résumés come in
many different formats, they share
some standards that you should
know about.
Keep it Short
Keep your résumé short. In
Canada, most people have a
résumé that is 2 pages long. Keep
it to 1 page if you finished school
recently or do not have a lot of
experience.
Change Your Résumé for Each Job
Career experts recommend
that you customize your résumé
for each job, especially at the
beginning of your résumé. General
or generic resumes do not work in
today’s labour market.
For some jobs, you can change a
few sentences to focus on certain
skills and accomplishments. For
others, you may need a completely
new résumé.
Include Volunteer Work
You should include your volunteer
experience in the section on work
experience. It is important to talk
about what you have done. It does
not matter if it was paid or unpaid
work.
Use Social Media
Many employers cross-reference
your résumé with your online
presence. LinkedIn is a popular
business-related social networking
site. When you update your résumé,
make sure to update your LinkedIn
profile too.
Employers may also look for you
on other social media tools, such as
Facebook, Twitter and blogs. First
impressions are important - if you
don’t want a potential employer
to see something, don’t make it
publically accessible or put it online
at all.
Formatting Hints
Format is critical. Your résumé
should be organized, neat, clear,
and consistent in formatting (e.g.,
font and bullets).
If you are applying for a job
which requires that you have
attention to detail, then you need to
demonstrate this with your résumé.
Use headings to organize the
information in your résumé.
Common résumé headings are:
–Highlights of Qualifications
–Professional Experience
–Education
Use formatting tools such as bold
and bullets to make important
information stand out.
Use Keywords
It is important to use keywords
in your résumé. Employers do
not read every word on each
résumé. Keywords describe skills
and qualifications. You might see
them in the job posting that you
are answering and on related
companies’ websites.
Enhance your résumé by using
as many keywords as you can. But,
do not make up experiences, just to
use keywords.
Look It Over
Look over your résumé before
you send it. Make sure the company
names, job titles and dates are
accurate.
Print out your resume to see how
it looks when printed.
You may wish to save your résumé
in PDF so that formatting will be
consistent and employers will be
able to open the document without
difficulty.
Types of Résumés
There are 2 common types of
résumés:
–Chronological
–Functional
Chronological Résumé
A chronological résumé is
time-based. It is organized by the
positions you have held, in order
of time. You list your most recent
position first. These résumés are
best if you have a lot of experience
in your field. They are also better for
people who do not have periods of
time when they were not working.
Functional Résumé
A functional résumé is skillsbased. It is organized by skills that
you gained in your previous work.
Functional résumés are best if you:
–Are a recent graduate
–Have major time gaps in
employment
–Are changing careers
Many settlement or employment
agencies can give you information
and advice about your résumé, and
how to create résumés for specific
fields.
What’s

Get your tax refund faster
with direct deposit
(NC) With tax filing season upon
us, many Canadians are anxiously
waiting for their refunds to arrive. For
those Canadians who have yet to sign
up for direct deposit, the wait will be
that much longer and could involve
blustery trips to the bank to deposit
their refunds.
Direct deposit is a much easier way for
Canadians to access the payments they
receive from the federal government,
including their tax refunds, which we
all know are very much appreciated
this time of the year. Even payments
like Old Age Pension or Canada Child
Tax Benefit can be deposited directly
into people’s bank accounts and the
payments are secure as well.
Currently, Ottawa issues over 300
million payments each year with 57
million cheques still being printed,
processed and mailed annually. The
cost savings associated with direct
deposit is huge and results in millions
in taxpayer savings a year in printing,
processing, mailing and transportation.
This tax season, the federal
government is reminding Canadians
Page 10
that direct deposit is fast, easy, safe
and convenient, not to mention
environmentally-friendly. Canadians
can avoid having to wait the normal
mailing time to get their tax refund just
by applying for direct deposit. All they
have to do is provide their banking info
when filing their taxes online or at their
bank or financial institution. They can
also sign up in several ways, by phone,
online, in-person and by mail. To find
out more on how to enrol, call 1-800593-1666 or visit www.directdeposit.
gc.ca.
Just make sure you have your banking
information such as branch, financial
institution and account number handy.
You can find this information at the
bottom of any of your personal cheques
attached to the account into which
you would like to have your funds
deposited.
The direct deposit enrolment form
has recently been streamlined to make
it easier for Canadians to enrol. If you
need help filling in the form, your bank
teller or a trusted advisor can also help
you.
This year, Durham College (DC) is
changing the way it connects with
prospective and current students,
parents, teachers, and the community
with Experience DC, a new and
innovative approach to its ongoing
marketing initiatives. Fourteen
Durham College (DC) students – Team
Experience – started their school year
in September by launching a social
networking website where they’re
sharing their stories with you. Representing a wide cross-section
of programs, personal interests and
personalities, Team Experience has
connected on Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram more than 20,000 times,
on YouTube more than 150,000 times,
and through more than 100 amazing
blogs to give you authentic, real-time
accounts of life at DC from their own
perspective.
“We are giving the world a view
of the walking path of 14 very
different college students for a year,”
said Josephine Spitale, an Experience
DC team member and second-year
Paralegal student. “We interact with
IN PRINT AND ON-LINE
23
fellow and prospective students, share
our experiences and illustrate the
amazing community that Durham
College is. Those following our stories
will watch our highs, our difficulties
and our growth in this period. They
will be part of our journey and, in some
way, we will be part of theirs. This
is Experience DC. This is Durham
College. This is us.”
These incredible students come from
all walks of life – here, you’ll find
someone to relate to whether it’s a
parent balancing schoolwork with
family life, a student on a journey
to study in Canada from abroad, a
first-year student straight from high
school, a returning grad, or one of
the other unique members of Team
Experience. Be a part of it. Visit www.
durhamcollege.ca/experience
to
follow along to check out their
adventures, see what college life is
really all about, and discover what
more than 67,000 alumni already know
– at DC the student Experience comes
first.

LOCAL HELP WANTED – YORK REGION
7 Ways To Impress A Recruiter On Your Next Job Interview
Recruiters and hiring managers
have seen every trick and gimmick in
the book when it comes to interviews.
Sometimes they work – but when
it comes down to it, whether you’re
wearing purple stilettos stilettos or
looking the interviewer in the eye,
it’s the content of the interview that
matters in the long run.
So what can you do that will really
impress a recruiter? Ace your next
interview with these tips:
1. Know your experience
It’s amazing how many people
stumble over what should be the
easiest questions – you’re just talking
about yourself! Look over your resume
as you prep for the interview. Think
about some of the most important
projects you’ve worked on, what you
liked and didn’t like about each job,
and acknowledge some of the biggest
challenges you’ve faced – and how
you overcame them – in each role. Be
ready to explain any “sketchy” details –
leaving a job without another one lined
up, gaps in work history, etc. You’ll have
an easier time explaining and applying
your experience when you know the
basics like the back of your hand.
2. Know the impact that your
experience has had
One of the best ways to impress a
recruiter is to quantify the impact
you had in previous roles. Recruiters
want to hear about what you’ve done
and how you did it, but understanding
the big picture and the impact of your
work is also important. Be prepared
to answer questions about outcomes –
maybe a monetary savings, increasing
efficiency, or an improved customer
experience – and how your work
played a role. Sharing outcomes lets
the recruiter know that you’re able to
follow a project through from start to
finish and understand the big picture.
3. Apply your past experience to the
job you’re interviewing for
Take the challenges and outcomes
you’ve already discussed and apply
them to the role you’re interviewing
for. It’s great to know what you’ve done,
but applying that to what the company
is currently doing is what will land you
the job. Mention specific goals this
position is intended to meet or qualities
the organization is seeking (you can
glean this information from the job
posting as well as the initial phone
screen) and discuss how you can use
your skills to meet those requirements.
4. Have a conversation
More often than not recruiters expect
candidates to do most of the talking in
the interview, but in a perfect world,
the interview would be a conversation
between both parties – after all, you’re
both trying to figure out if you’re right
for each other. Find something in
common with the interviewer, and do
your research on the organization to
come armed with the information you
need. Straight Q&A sessions can get
pretty boring for recruiters, so you’ll
stand out if you can get the recruiter
engaged in the conversation.
5. Ask the right questions
Keep the conversation flowing by
asking questions that add value to
the interview. Interview questions
like these are great to ask in an early
interview (i.e., your phone screening
with a recruiter), but they don’t add
a lot of value to the conversation
in further rounds. Your interview
questions should align more closely
with what you already know about the
job, and highlight the skills that you
bring to the table.
6. Talk about the organization’s
culture, and how you fit
Most organizations showcase their
IN PRINT AND ON-LINE
23
culture via their website or social
media. Do they post funny sayings, or
pictures of community events? Or do
they stick strictly to product offerings
and marketing communications?
Investigate these sites thoroughly
before your interview to get a sense
of how casual or formal you will
be expected to operate both in the
interview and if you get the job. By
better understanding the organization’s
culture, you’ll be able to provide better
examples of how you’ll be a fit for their
team. Company culture questions like
these are a great way to bring this up in
the interview.
7. Send a thoughtful follow-up note
after your interview
Pick out the most important points
from your interview – whether it was
something new you learned about
the organization, a conversation topic
where you really hit it off with the
team, or a particular skill you might
have forgotten to elaborate on – and
send a short follow up within a day of
your interview. You can use this note
to remind them why you’re the best
candidate for the role – based on your
experience and your knowledge – not
on tricks and gimmicks.

Debt reduction essential
for Boomers
(NC) Financially speaking, you’re
feeling pretty good about yourself. The
taxes are filed and the refund should be
deposited into your account in a couple
of days. Like every year, you’re going to
reinvest it: some into the RRSP, some
in the TFSA and the balance into an
RESP account. As a bonus, your debt
is manageable and you’re fast-tracking
your mortgage payments. Give yourself
a round of applause because you are a
financial champion!
Sure you are — in a perfect world.
But the truth is that like most
Canadians, you’re probably carrying a
lot of credit card and mortgage debt.
And like the last few tax seasons, you
owe the taxman a small king’s ransom.
Feeling less smug now aren’t you? The
fact is that as Boomers get closer to
retirement age, many are still loaded
down by debt. This is an issue because
their income will be greatly reduced
during retirement and paying down the
debt will be increasingly more difficult.
Of course, the goal is to pay it off first.
The experts from Desjardins Group
suggest that while you’re still working
it’s important to look at your financial
situation seriously and start making the
necessary adjustments now.
Never too late to set up good financial
habits
According to Statistics Canada’s
“Retiring with debt” publication, over
half of retirees are still paying off some
form of debt. It can be in the form of
loans, credit cards and lines of credit.
But the good news is that these retirees
owe less than Canadian workers
Feb. 7 – Feb. 21, 2015
aged 55 and up. Their median debt is
$19,000, as compared to $40,000 for
workers. The idea is to develop good
financial habits during your working
life to ensure that you have plenty of
savings and few liabilities at retirement.
Understanding your liabilities and
paying them off
There are two types of liabilities: one
increases your assets like a mortgage
and the other reduces your assets like a
credit card. Credit in and of itself isn’t
the problem, so long as it’s managed
well. To know exactly where you stand
make a list of what you owe:
• Bank and store credit cards tend to
have the highest interest rates, so you
should focus on paying these off first
• Lines of credit
• Car loan
• Investment loans
• Student loans
Once you’ve paid off the one with
the highest interest rate, consider
trying paying off your mortgage next.
You can reduce the amortization period
for your mortgage by increasing your
payment amounts, payment frequency
(e.g. weekly rather than monthly) or
by making a prepayment. As an added
protection, consider credit insurance
and term life insurance. In case of
illness, disability or death, these types
of insurance will protect your family
by covering off your debts and securing
your assets.

Credit and Debt page of the CoopMe section on the Desjardins Group
