Announcements
There is considerable disagreement over the role of music in Islamic worship. While many Muslims do believe that all music is forbidden (even the chants are defined as “recitation”), others
hold that vocal music is permitted, and still other leaders say that all music is permissible, as
long as it “does not encourage sinful acts.” Gamal Abdel-Rahim was an Egyptian composer
whose “Variation” uses European variation techniques in combination with Egyptian dance
rhythms. Ahmad Jamal, who converted to Islam in his early twenties, has enjoyed an exceptionally long career as a consistently innovative jazz pianist. The late Marian McPartland made this
more relaxed and singing arrangement of a selection from Jamal's 1985 album “Rossiter Road.”
While not composed for worship, Alludin Mathieu’s Arabic “Love, Light and Guidance” fits into
the long tradition of praise for Allah. Robert Schumann's output has often been viewed in terms
of his severe mental illness. For example, scholars have attempted to show that the odd chromaticism of this fugue on the motive derived from Bach's name "foreshadows" his mental decline, but this overlooks Schumann’s consistently innovative approach to composition throughout his life.

January 25: Youth Scholarships to Attend General Assembly
Our Generosity Offering this Sunday will go to our General Assembly Youth &
Young Adult Scholarship Fund. General Assembly, which is the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Annual Meeting, will be in Portland, Oregon this June.
The meeting is an opportunity to build relationships with UUs from throughout
the country, to participate in amazing worship, and to develop new leadership
skills. At least six youth from our church are planning to attend GA this year, and
your support will allow us to provide needed scholarships.
